1 EVIDENCE EXCHANGE NETWORK 18 Month Report October 2011 to March 2013 Submi ed to the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care July 31, 2013

2 Introduc on Evidence Exchange Network (EENet) is a knowledge exchange network that aims to make Ontario s addic ons and mental health system more evidence informed. The network has come a long way since October 2011, when it first started to support knowledge exchange (KE) for 10 Ontario systems projects, which were funded, like EENet, by Health Canada s (). At that me, the network was called the Ontario Mental Health and Addic ons Knowledge Exchange Network or OMHAKEN. Since that me, EENet has rebranded itself. This has meant a new name, a new logo, and a new website,. This process culminated in April 2012, when EENet launched its new brand, with an expanded team that included knowledge brokers in Toronto, regional KE leads across the province, a new communica ons associate, and a sense of renewed purpose. This report provides an overview of EENet s goals and outputs from October 2011 to March Execu ve Summary In October 2011, EENet was charged with the task of providing KE support to the Ontario systems projects. During the 18 months that followed, the network provided each project with access to knowledge brokers who developed KE plans as well as products and tools to profile evidence, and gave them ongoing implementa on support. The network also profiled the projects within Ontario and across Canada through a series of webinars as well as KE events that facilitated knowledge sharing with stakeholders. To broaden the knowledge base, EENet also convened a panel of persons with lived experience and family members. Eight of the Ontario systems projects consulted with this advisory panel and made use of their feedback for systems improvement. EENet also provided KE and financial support to three communi es of interest, forums for KE and collabora ve knowledge crea on on topics related to Ontario systems projects. Finally, EENet developed a solid founda on for evalua on by integra ng evalua on indicators into many of its ac vi es and by par cipa ng in an external evalua on process with the Evalua on Centre for Complex Health Interven ons at the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Ins tute, St. Michael s Hospital. Among other things, EENet: Provided access to knowledge brokers who developed KE plans and ongoing implementa on support for each project Developed products and tools to profile evidence for various stakeholders. For example: we developed summer and fall 2012 newsle ers detailing Dr. Rush s suite of projects in English and French; provided design support for the Trauma Ma ers poster; developed one page brochures for each of the Ontario systems projects that highlighted project outcomes Hosted and promoted 14 webinars for projects from Ontario and other provinces (see page 7) Hosted three large scale KE events with key stakeholders (see page 6) Disseminated KE tools and reports at Ontario conferences related to addic ons and mental health (see page 8) through EENet partners (see page 7) and through social media (see page 9) Supported linkage and exchange across the projects (see page 6) Provided seed funds to support end of year KE ac vi es (see page 6) Facilitated Consulta ons with Persons with Lived Experience and Family Member Panel EENet convened and hosted the Persons with Lived Experience and Family Member Advisory Panel. The purpose of this panel was to broaden the evidence base by making the knowledge of persons with lived experience and their family members more accessible to each of the Ontario systems projects and for Ontario s addic ons and mental health system more generally. The Panel met six mes between January 2012 and February The following eight Ontario systems projects consulted with the Panel: EENet 18 Month Report (Oct to March 2013) Page 4

The Panel also described the types of services that family members and caregivers of youth clients need and how they would op mally access those services. For the Ontario Client Sa sfac on Project, the Panel raised concerns that had not emerged in the pilot phase and some Panel members were invited to par cipate in a session to help refine the tool. The Peer Support Project consulted with the Panel on who they should invite to par cipate in their consulta on and the ques ons they should ask. Members of the Panel were also invited to sit on the Peer Support Project Advisory Commi ee. Met with Ontario Systems Project Leads EENet has had extensive discussions with the project leads over the course of the 18 months to iden fy their KE and implementa on needs. Also, there were discussions on the results of the project evalua on for the as a whole. Those KE/implementa on needs that were iden fied were incorporated into subsequent EENet work plans. 6 Goal 2: Support Linkage and Exchange Across Projects Held KE Events for Ontario Systems Projects EENet held three KE events (October 2011, October 2012, and March 2013). These oneday events gave project leads and key stakeholders from across the system an opportunity to connect and share knowledge related to the projects. Each of these events included par cipa on by an average of 60 representa ves from the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care, Local Health Integra on Networks, and each of the project advisory commi ees. Provided KE Support to Communi es of Interest EENet provided financial, technical, and knowledge broker support to three communi es of interest (CoIs), forums for collabora ve knowledge crea on and exchange on topics related to the Ontario systems projects. These were: Specialized Geriatric Addic ons Services CoI Health Equity Impact Assessment CoI Peer Support CoI EENet created capacity building opportuni es for CoI members and supported them as they iden fied, created, and shared evidence across sectors and stakeholder groups. Ac vi es included: development and implementa on of KE plans, suppor ng broad use of the Health Equity Impact Assessment (HEIA) tool, crea on of web content, planning and execu ng KE events that brought together diverse stakeholder groups, and hos ng interac ve webinars. Enhanced Sector Capacity for Evidence Uptake In partnership with the Ontario Federa on of Community Mental Health and Addic on Programs and Addic ons Ontario, EENet co piloted the Canadian Founda on for Healthcare Improvement (CFHI) tool Is Research Working for You? with seven community addic on and mental health agencies in Ontario. The tool helped these organiza ons build sector capacity for EENet 18 Month Report (Oct to March 2013) Page 6
