1 Dear Seattle Reps, I can hardly believe that another year is coming to a close. With having just celebrated Thanksgiving, I for one have a lot to be thankful, one of things I am most thankful for is being a part of this EWI Chapter. We have a group of amazing women and I am honored to know each one of you. I d like to briefly review some of our speakers and events of the past year as our goals are to provide you with professional development, connections and community involvement. Also the board has the responsibility to meet with our financial advisor and volunteer panel to review the investments of our EWISP Scholarship Fund. In January our guest speaker was Catherine Romero from the American Heart Association who shared with us about her health and struggles and recovery from a stroke. Her fight back to good health was very moving and gave each one of us a lot of information about our own heart health. In February we heard from Diane Rohrbach from FARE Nutrition. Diane spoke about how the processed foods we eat affect our minds and body. She also spoke about the benefits of eating foods that are organic and not quite so processed. This year we brought back Firm Night. In August we met with Julie Delano and her firm Pet Partners. The volunteers as Pet Partners are dedicated to providing positive human-animal interaction to improve the physical, emotional and psychological lives of those they serve. In November we met with and Jessica Guerrero at the corporate offices of Ben Bridge Jeweler. Lisa Bridge brought us the history of their family business. She is the 5 th generation to be working in the family business. We learned about the dedication they have to their employees, their customers, education and the community. I m not sure how this happens, but every year it seems that Scholarship Night just gets better and better. Carolyn Tran our first place scholarship winner also was awarded an additional scholarship from EWI Corporate. Carolyn could hardly believe her good fortune. She and the other scholarship winners are so deserving of these awards. We also heard back from a previous scholarship winner, Jillian Jaccard. Jillian sent us a letter that expressed her gratitude in winning her scholarship and how it helped with the financing of her education. The BOD has met with our financial advisor, Kathy Hobart of Morgan Stanley and our volunteer financial panel. We are in the proper investments to maintain growth for our scholarship funds so that we can continue to award EWISP and ASIST scholarships. In 2014 we will get back to scheduling two reviews per year. Kathy Hobart was our speaker in May to give us all some insight and knowledge about wealth management for women. I hope all of you gave thought about your own wealth management and how you can significantly impact your future with the best investments for your goals. We had Katy Kay of Virtually Savvy to speak to us about how best to use social media. I know a lot of us came away with a clearer understanding of how to use the many social media tools. Julie Gutenplan from Alliant is working on our chapter s LinkedIn page. We ll be hearing more from Julie. Our chapter has continued to partner with Page Ahead over the years. This program gives children the opportunity to receive books and to keep alive their interest in reading. EWI locally and nationally is dedicated to improving literacy in our communities. Since 2005 our chapter has given over 900 books and donated over $6, Jen Mueller spoke to us in October about how the business professional can use sports talk to help build relationships and generate business for you. Our chapter has added two new firms this year. Make sure you welcome and get to know Julie Gutenplan and Kayla Didier of Alliant Employee Benefits and Khynna Beaton of Sun Life Financial. We are so glad to have you and your firms in our chapter. December is our Annual Holiday Party. We ll be at Il Fornaio in Pacific Place on December 17 th. See Jen Gaspar s for details. 4 "Beauty in Ting" by Angie Morgan When someone tells you to listen, suddenly you are all ears. However, in Chinese, the word listen involves more senses and ideas. In fact, the word Ting, when translated means that you listen with your eyes, your heart, and your ears. You also listen as if you are speaking to a king, meaning that you put a significant priority on whoever is speaking. I like this. In fact, I find that when I focus intently on listening to someone (in the spirit of Ting) I have more satisfying, productive and enriching conversations that have resulted in deeper relationships. What if we all spent more time listening deeply listening to one another? Perhaps we could expedite the speed of trust, resolve conflicts quicker, and find more joy (and less frustration) in daily dialogues. leadstar / Leadership Moment PEARLS OF WISDOM Obstacles can t stop you. 5 The Angel Inside You A young boy was walking down the street when he came upon an old cathedral. He could hear banging and clanging coming from within and decided to open the door to find out what was going on, Inside, an old man worked on a huge block of marble with a chisel and a hammer. The old man never noticed the young boy, and after a few minutes the boy wandered off unimpressed by what he saw. Many days later, the boy was once again passing by the cathedral. This time it was the silence that stoked his curiosity, and he peeked in to see why things were so quiet. The old man was still at work, but instead of a hammer and chisel he held a soft cloth that he used to polish a large angelic figure that had once been the block of marble. The little boy stood in amazement of what he saw, and after several minutes he asked the old man. How did you know that angel was inside that block of marble? The old man turned to the boy and said: There is an angel inside us all. All you need to do is chip away at those little hard pieces that do not resemble one, and you will release the angel that is inside you. Bits & Pieces March 2013
