2 Coaching vs. Consul ng Coaching is neither counseling nor consul ng. It is a facilita ve process whereby the coach pulls rather than pushes, in order to draw out the coachee(s) best thinking and decision making. JPG takes a coaching approach based on the model used and taught by the Center for Crea ve Leadership and Leadership Systems, Inc. JPG President Patrick Jinks is a cer fied leadership coach with Leadership Systems, and uses powerful ques ons to bring key issues to the surface. Patrick also leverages his own 20 years of experience on local, state, and na onal nonprofit boards, and 12 years as a nonprofit CEO. He speaks the language and understands the complex challenges nonprofit leaders face, so he brings the right ques ons to the table, and leads execu ves through cri cal thinking processes to arrive at purposeful and powerful strategy.
3 The Coaching Cycle 8 Key Steps to Elevated Leadership JPG employs a process that leads the coachee from assessment and goal se ng to idea genera on, focus and priori za on, ac on, and measurement. We help execu ves see the goal, chart the path, and lead the way. The cycle has 8 steps over a period of 3 6 months (a typical coaching engagement meframe). A descrip on of each step is on the next page. Coaching is a powerful mechanism for helping leaders execute with greater focus, engage their teams more effec vely, developing other leaders, and advancing their most important work. Most of all, it elevates the leader s mindset and posi ons them for greater impact over the long term.
4 The Coaching Cycle THE ASSESSMENT PHASE 1. CONNECT Connec on between the coach and the leader is cri cal. JPG will start by ensuring a strong connec on and understanding of the leader s environment, goals, and unique challenges. 2. CLARIFY Through a series of comprehensive leadership inventories (including a 360 degree assessment) and opening conversa on, the coach will help the leader establish clarity on where the strengths lie, what the opportuni es are, and what any specific challenges and goals will define the engagement. 3. CONFIRM The coach and leader will agree on the desired end product of the engagement, the highest priori es for the work, and the process for advancing the work. THE CHALLENGE PHASE 4. CHALLENGE The coach will challenge assump ons, premise, issues, etc. in order to generate cri cal thinking from the leader.
5 The Coaching Cycle THE SUPPORT PHASE 1. EXPLORE In this phase, the coach helps the leader create ideas and opportuni es for innova on and ac on toward the ar culated goals. 2. ENGAGE The coach will engage the leader in beginning to execute on the ac on plan. This phase is where the bulk of the work occurs as the leader begins to stretch new leadership muscles. 3. EXPECT Perhaps the most powerful mechanism of the coaching process is the accountability element. The coach becomes a safe party to whom the leader becomes accountable for commitment and follow through 4. EVALUATION What gets measured gets done. The coaching process includes progress status monitoring, and the coach assists the leader in making necessary adjustments toward achieving the goals.
6 Execu ve Coaching Key Principles Trust and Openness Execu ve coaching is built on strong trust, and a willingness on the part of the leader to be challenged, stretched, and open to new self reflec on. Confiden ality The flip side of the trust is confiden ality. JPG is adamant about confiden ality in the coaching process, and guarantees it 100%. Change Golfers do not hire swing coaches to help them keep their swing the same. They seek to improve it, and some mes to fundamentally change it! Safety While coaching is challenging, it is also safe. Coaching provides a safe place to fail and try again when working to implement new leadership behaviors. Long term Impact Coaching addresses behaviors in the short term that lead to habits in the long term.
7 Execu ve Coaching Common Process (6 month engagement) Prepara on and Assessment JPG will assign the leader a series of leadership inventories and assessments that will help frame the engagement. Assessment Review The coach will review and interpret the assessments, and help the leader form the goals to work on through the course of the engagement. Monthly 1 on 1 Coaching Sessions The coach will engage the leader for approximately 1 hour per month and provide sound support for leader as the goals are pursued. Development Plan Support The coach will provide a development plan template that will help the leader remain on track, and monitor progress on specific goals. End Product Closing the coaching engagement is flexible. Op ons include extending the engagement, iden fying next steps for further development, etc.
