2 National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association presents NWRA Symposium 2014 March Murfreesboro, Tennessee Join NWRA and our Host, Walden s Puddle Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center, for abundant learning opportunities through an exceptional Symposium program packed with diverse selections. Wildlife Rehabilitation The Next Generation Wildlife rehabilitation is hard work, but it also is extremely rewarding. The 2014 Symposium logo features all young animals animals representative of the many orphaned or injured wild creatures you have helped to recover so they can be released. All of us know that indescribable and wonderful feeling of watching a wild animal return to its natural home. Whether as an individual or part of a central facility, those who provide hands-on care, those who give educational programs and those who help with surgical and medical intervention, all are ensuring a future for wildlife. But, who is ensuring there will be wildlife rehabilitators, educators and veterinarians in the future? All the current work is short-lived if there is no one to help wildlife in years to come. Who will provide wildlife rehabilitation and educational services in your area when you no longer do so? Are you trying to interest others in your work? Are you asking others to join you at a release? Are you offering volunteer positions through area schools, veterinary offices and other locations? Are you telling educational program attendees about our work and encouraging them to participate? Do you have a training plan for those interested? Are related college courses or internships available nearby? Wildlife rehabilitators, educators and veterinarians, even humanity in general, have limited options in making a future, positive difference for wildlife on a large scale. We can t change the weather, stop natural disasters, prevent wars that destroy habitat or alter many other similar negative impacts on wildlife. What we can do is ensure there is a next generation providing care for injured or orphaned wild creatures, ensure there are educators following us in interacting and teaching the public and ensure there are veterinarians interested, trained and willing to assist wildlife in need. In fact, if you think about it, involving and training others is actually pretty easy the major expense is your time. And speaking of time, wouldn t you like to know there is someone carrying on your work when you are not able to continue, ensuring all the time and effort you invested continues, providing the same quality care for wildlife and helping to save wild creatures for the future just as you do now? Join the Friends of Symposium 2014 to help support this important educational event! NWRA s goal is to provide an extremely high quality conference at very affordable prices. YOU can help achieve this goal! Simply donate $25 or more on your registration form. Your valuable contribution is tax deductible and is recognized at the Symposium. The Program With all the choices available in four concurrent sessions and pre-symposium seminars, there is always something new to learn for each attendee. Advances in care protocols, medical techniques, information on new diseases, public educational program tips and facility management offer valuable information for all. The NWRA Program Committee strives to ensure current and relevant topics are presented to help rehabilitators, educators and veterinarians continue to improve wildlife care, present dynamic programs and share surgical and medical discoveries. All presentations and events take place at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Murfreesboro unless otherwise stated. NEW! Tuesday Evening Poster Session Poster sessions are another way to present research results or new information in the field. The poster displays pertinent project information in a visual format with the presenter(s) available at the poster to answer questions or relay additional information. Topics include Botulism in Paradise, Conservation Genetics of Bald Eagles, Natural Disasters: Impact on Wildlife Rehabilitators and more! Sessions Each session features a series of papers devoted to a specific topic or is an interactive focused discussion two to four hours in length. Sessions are open to all registrants and do not require signup. Note the Presentation Sampler for more exciting preview items. You do not want to miss the Opening speaker, David G. Haskell, author, scientist and professor. He is described by the New York Times as someone who thinks like a biologist, writes like a poet, and gives the natural world the kind of open-minded attention one expects from a Zen monk rather than a hypothesis-driven scientist. Haskell s scientific research focuses on animal ecology, evolution and conservation. He is known for the innovative way he combines science, contemplation and action in the community with his classroom teaching. An author book signing is offered for Haskell s book The Forest Unseen: A Year s Watch in Nature. This book is available for purchase during the icebreaker and remainder of the symposium. The special Opportunities for Education in Wildlife Rehabilitation provides information on training the next generation. Short presentations on formal training available cover everything from online courses to veterinary schools that offer training in wildlife care. An open question and answer discussion follows. NEW this year is a Large Carnivore Session with information on Bear Rehabilitation, Natural History & Rehabilitation of Red Foxes and Basics on Bobcats, interesting even if you do not handle these creatures. Housing, nutrition, handling and special concerns with larger animals are covered. At the other end of the spectrum is the Small Mammal Session covering rehabilitation, housing, nutrition and special care for more commonly admitted patients

3 squirrels, cottontails, raccoons, beaver and fawns. Other mammal topics include Infectious Disease Management in Raccoons and Affordable Housing: Solutions for All Species. Additional new topics are Mammal Physiology and how this helps determine drug metabolism, dietary needs and general care, as well as Osmoregulatory Physiology of Birds and Turtle Physiology. The Re-nesting/Reuniting Session dedicates two full hours to mammals and two to birds what is unique to each, what cautions are important and special considerations for re-nesting and reuniting. Don t forget to look for the workshop lectures at the Symposium; these are open to all with no extra registration required. A full morning is devoted to the Infectious Diseases Session. With all the new diseases surfacing, a large number of them from animals, we need to keep up-to-date on zoonotic potential more than ever, as well as recognize disease symptoms in wildlife received for care. Learn more specifics in Emerging Infectious Diseases and Raptor Diseases. Additional avian presentations include Razorbills in South Beach: Expect the Unexpected; Rooftop Nesting Shorebirds Living on a High-rise; Rehabilitation of Shorebirds and Waders; Brevetoxicosis in Seabirds; Tucson Mountain Hummingbird Rescue Project; Characterization of Starvation in Raptors Presented to Rehabilitators and Notable Cases in Raptor Care. Other valuable topics are wide-ranging: Social Media for Your Wildlife Centre; Redesign Your Volunteer Program: Recruitment, Training, and Retention; Fracture Assessment in Wild Patients The Big Picture; Physical Therapy Alternative for Head and Spinal Injuries and Wildlife Rehabilitation in New Zealand. The always popular Veterinary Session continues to be offered with new wildlife care discoveries from the veterinary medical perspective such as Low Level Laser Therapy and Chinese Therapies. Seminars Seminars are designed for in-depth study of a particular topic and attendance of the entire seminar is recommended. Often audience participation is an integral part of a seminar for interactive learning. If you handle administrative work, whether by choice or default, there are two Administration Seminars to help facilitate your duties. The Business Administration seminar focuses on establishing, running and fundraising for a rehabilitation center with the goal of helping those operating a rehabilitation organization. Then, Stump the Business Manager is a lively, fun and interactive seminar about dealing with the public, volunteers, paid staff, your board, your spouse and humans in general. If feathers are your thing, the new Songbird Fundamentals seminar is for you. Everything you need to know is covered from nestling care to release, simple to difficult how to make a nest, ID nestlings, feeding methods, diet, housing and release criteria. Workshops Workshops are designed for hands-on participation therefore limited enrollment is necessary. Pre-registration by mail is required. For further explanation, see Workshop Pre-registration information. The workshop table opens Tuesday, March 11 at 6:30 pm at the Symposium and is open various hours on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday for payment of workshop fees and workshop sign-up. Workshops are two to four hours long and pre-requisite lectures are given during regular sessions, often the day before the workshop date. NEW! In the Corrective Physical Therapy Techniques workshop, learn the effects of immobilization on the musculoskeletal system of mammals and birds, how to assess joint and tissue mobility and how to develop a treatment plan. Participants practice physical therapy techniques on bird and mammal carcasses. Lecture is Thursday afternoon. All aspects of turtle rehabilitation are covered in the Turtle Management workshop, from examination, anatomy, feeding and other procedures to shell repair and necropsy techniques. No separate lecture. The Happy Feet 2014 workshop concentrates on paws-n-claws with bandaging, splinting, sandaling and treating of common foot injuries in mammals and birds, including de-gloved paws, curled toes, bumble foot and other foot problems. Lecture is Wednesday afternoon. Learn and practice a variety of limb immobilization techniques for a variety of mammals in the Mammal Fracture Stabilization workshop. Great opportunity to practice your palpation skills. Lecture is Thursday afternoon. The Comparative Hematology workshop provides instruction and handson work in techniques to determine packed cell volume and total solids, making blood smears, identifying white blood cell types and doing cell counts. Blood smears from mammals and reptiles are provided to compare and contrast with avian blood. Lecture is Thursday morning. Learn the types of swivels, leashes and perches used with raptors and the materials used to make them. Then make your own jesses, anklets and leashes in the Raptor Equipment workshop. No prerequisite lecture. NEW! Learn the principles behind environmental enrichment for different wild patients in the Principles of Enrichment workshop, then work to create enrichment devices shown and apply these principles to create enrichment in your facility upon return. Lecture is Wednesday afternoon. NEW! Be ready to start hammering (really!) in the Cage Building workshop as you learn through a basic step-by-step process and build a life-sized, versatile wildlife enclosure from foundation to roof. Lecture is Thursday morning. NEW! Learn about and try making preserved feet or wings for use in educational programs in the Preparing Avian Biofacts workshop. Items may be taken home if you bring proof of your current state and federal salvage permits for artifact possession. Lecture is Wednesday afternoon. 4 Pre-Symposium Seminars Basic Wildlife Rehabilitation This seminar is recommended for those new to wildlife rehabilitation or those considering entering the field and gives participants an introduction to and explanation of wildlife rehabilitation. Topics covered include networking with experienced rehabilitators, phone skills for dealing with the public, establishing a veterinary relationship and necessary record keeping. After these basics that support both the wildlife and the rehabilitator, hands-on learning begins on avian and mammalian carcasses. Instructions on what to include and how to do a full physical exam, assessment of dehydration and determination of appropriate fluid therapy protocol, selection of the correct syringe and needle and accurately reading the syringe, practicing subcutaneous and intramuscular injections, tube feeding (gavage) mammals and birds, and basic stabilization bandaging to prevent further injury are addressed. Included is an overview of wildlife diseases, proper cleaning and disinfecting, and caging necessary for different species with different degrees of impairment and preparation for release. Wrapping up the seminar is a discussion on learning to say no, offering quality care vs. quantity care and learning to deal with difficult issues such as death of an animal in care. Participants receive a certificate of attendance for the course. The instructors recommend purchasing and reading NWRA s Principles of Wildlife Rehabilitation: The Essential Guide for Novice and Experienced Rehabilitators (Moore and Joosten), revised 2008, to provide a valuable reference foundation. The book may be purchased at the symposium or in advance. Ordering information is sent with your registration confirmation letter. Reduced cost is $65 for over 600 pages of useful material. This seminar is offered Tuesday March 11 8:00 am to 5:00 pm and is limited to 40 people. SEMINAR SPACE is FILLED ON A FIRST-COME, FIRST-SERVED BASIS. You are notified immediately if the seminar is full. Cost is $60 (refundable if full). ADVANCE PAYMENT IS REQUIRED with your Symposium registration. If only attending Tuesday Seminar, do not add 1-day registration fee. Patient Evaluation and Stabilization This one-day course is designed to provide the rehabilitator an opportunity to practice common procedures in evaluating and stabilizing a patient, from intake and general exam through stabilization and diagnostics. Participants work in pairs with one adult bird and one adult mammal carcass per team. Instructors assume participants already have experience doing physical exams and basic stabilization of patients, and use this workshop to hone existing skills and present a few advanced techniques. While largely hands-on, wet lab activities are supplemented with brief lectures to illustrate certain techniques or conditions and to present some case illustrations. The workshop covers external examination, ophthalmic exam, patient stabilization (fluid and medication administration, fracture immobilization, application of tail guards and carpal bumpers in birds), diagnostics (positioning for radiographs, crop wash, skin scraping, fecal and urine collection, blood collection), and the day ends with each person conducting a necropsy on their patient. All participants receive a certificate of attendance for the course. Four optional quizzes/evaluations are provided throughout the day and an additional certificate is available to those who successfully complete this challenge. Participants must provide a pen or pencil. This seminar is offered Tuesday March 11 8:00 am to 5:00 pm and is limited to 30 people. SEMINAR SPACE is FILLED ON A FIRST-COME, FIRST-SERVED BASIS. You are notified immediately if the seminar is full. Cost is $80 (refundable if full). ADVANCE PAYMENT IS REQUIRED with your Symposium registration. If only attending Tuesday Seminar, do not add 1-day registration fee. Pre-order your Symposium Logo T-shirt on the registration form. Only $15 if received by February 14, 2014! NWRA Symposium 2014 Approved continuing education Over 130 hours of choices Hands-on skills training Select what YOU need Radnor Lake State Park This natural area in south Nashville provides a variety of scenic spots and diversity of natural habitats ranging from the lake, to streams and placid sloughs, and has some of the highest hills in the Nashville Basin. The rocks, which form its hills and valleys, were deposited on the floor of a shallow, tropical, inland sea 500,000,000 years ago. The 85-acre lake was impounded in 1914 by the railroad company to furnish water for steam engines and stockyards and soon after wildlife discovered and began using the site. All hunting in the area was stopped in 1923, and in 1973 Tennessee purchased the site as the first official state natural area. Construction on the new Barbara J. Mapp Aviary Educational Center and elevated boardwalk for viewing non-releasable raptors will be completed shortly before this field trip. A naturalist park ranger leads a moderately easy two-mile hike around Lake Radnor and through special habitat, with spotting scopes to assist with wildlife observation, plus you have time to visit the new Education Center. Depending on temperature and weather, one may see multiple herpetile species, including salamanders, frogs, snakes, lizards and turtles, many duck and goose species, multiple wood-warbler species, especially during migration, six species of vireos, both tanagers, all the thrushes, both orioles, any of the swallows, a myriad of flycatchers and owls and hawks, just to name a few. Mammals present include deer, chipmunk, river otter, beaver, mink, muskrat, bobcat, coyote, whitetailed deer and others. The two field trips depart the Embassy Suites Hotel Tuesday March 11 promptly at 8:15 am and return at 12:15 pm and depart again at 1:00 pm and return at 5:00 pm.
