Progress in Creating a Global Polar Metadata Interoperability Network Julie E. Friddell Canadian Cryospheric Information Network/Polar Data Catalogue Department of Geography, University of Waterloo Canada ECDS Seminar on Open Access and E-Infrastructure 4 March 2015, Stockholm
History Canadian Cryospheric Information Network Begun in mid-1990 s - partnership between Ellsworth LeDrew/University of Waterloo, Canadian Space Agency, Meteorological Service of Canada/Environment Canada, Natural Resources Canada, Noetix Research, others To provide data management and access for the Canadian snow and ice research community, in particular, the NASA EOS CRYSYS (Cryosphere System in Canada) program Hosted data files, satellite imagery, and an outreach/ education website

Polar Data Catalogue Data archive and public access portal for polar research data and information, primarily from northern Canada Launched 2007 Metadata at first, adding data since 2011 From projects on natural environment, social sciences, health, policy, etc. Data and metadata come from a variety of Canadian and international programs conducting research and environmental monitoring in northern Canada and the circumpolar Arctic
Polar Data Catalogue PDC also hosts satellite imagery from northern Canada and Antarctica In 2014, PDC was approved as a member of the World Data System We have also applied to be Canada s National Antarctic Data Centre for SC-ADM Interoperability is a major priority We seek to share metadata with polar data portals in Canada and around the world

Sharing metadata at PDC During IPY (2010), we set up a metadata sharing prototype between PDC, the Norwegian Meteorological Institute, and the National Snow and Ice Data Center (US) We have made presentations and convened sessions at conferences to seek and meet new partners (Polar Data Forum, Japan, 2013; SciDataCon, India, 2014) We have expanded our interoperability testing within Canada and with other countries
Interoperability Partners Alaska Ocean Observing System Yukon Research Centre US National Snow and Ice Data Center University of Alberta PDC/CCIN Scholars Portal/OCUL/U. of Toronto Inuit Qaujisarvingat Circumpolar Biodiversity Monitoring Program Norwegian Met. Institute & GCW British Antarctic Survey GEO/GEOSS National Institute of Polar Research Dept. 23 Interoperability Protocols at PDC We provide metadata and data via the following protocols: OAI-PMH, WMS (OGC), and CSW (OGC) for PDC metadata records wms? WFS (OGC) for selected geospatial datasets, using GeoServer
Protocols and Standards We harvest from others using the following protocols: OAI-PMH WebDAV, using GeoNetwork CSW Metadata standards in use at the PDC: We originally provided metadata in FGDC standard In 2014, we added ISO (North American Profile) so that we can be more interoperable with international partners We harvest FGDC, ISO 19115, DIF/GCMD
Sharing metadata at PDC Our preference is 2-way linkage, so that we harvest others metadata and they harvest PDC Once harvested, external metadata will be available in the PDC for online search PDC metadata are currently available online through a small number of other portals Issue: Some partners only want to do a 1-way harvest - they are not interested in providing external metadata in their online data search
Metadata Elements project International Arctic Science Committee/Sustaining Arctic Observing Networks (IASC/SAON) Arctic Data Committee (ADC) First meeting November 2014, Potsdam Canada leading ADC metadata elements project: Inventorying metadata implementations at polar data repositories around the world Goal is to recommend a minimum set of metadata elements that are required for optimal interoperability
Next Steps Continue expansion of interoperable links ECDS! Finland, China (Polar Research Institute), Pangaea More in Canada Make harvested metadata available online in PDC Make recommendations on metadata elements to the polar data management community Polar Data Forum II, planned for Waterloo, Canada, October 2015 Interoperability will be one of the major themes
Sharing polar data Linking with other polar data portals around Canada and the world and providing sharing functions increase access to data and information Open data is the future! Research funding agencies are going this way - open access for publications, open access to data It benefits researchers - more exposure for your work, collaboration, access to other data, publication, etc For further information on our web services endpoints:
