Web-based spatio-temporal visualization and analysis of the Siberian Earth System Science Cluster (SIB-ESS-C) Roman Gerlach Supervisor: Prof. C. Schmullius (Dept. of Geography, Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena, Germany) Prof. S. Nativi (Italian National Research Council - IMAA and University of Florence at Prato) 18/12/2009 roman.gerlach@uni-jena.de 1
Introduction During the last decade, our ability to collect and store data has far outpaced our ability to process, analyze and exploit it. (Compieta et al. 2007) we collect more data than be we can actually process there is more information in the data than we have exploited so far data availability is not the problem, its data access we need to improve our methods and tools for data processing and analysis 18/12/2009 2
powered by 18/12/2009 3
Web-based data visualization Simple Map Server most common visualization type pre-defined & fixed number of data layers limited functionality (Zoom, Pan, Identify, Measure, Print) integrated analysis of different data layers not possible 18/12/2009 4
CarboScope Web Analysis Tool Visualization of CO2 and CH4 model results exploration and comparison of time-series and maps animation through time pre-defined spatial and temporal selection options data download available (ascii) stand-alone system 18/12/2009 5
NASA GIOVANNI GES-DISC (Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center) Interactive Online Visualization ANd analysis Infrastructure. dynamic approach, on-demand processing of requests (charts, maps, etc.) data products (incl. observations & modelling results) are spatially equalized to 1 x 1 grid download of data (HDF, NetCDF, ASCII) and charts (PNG, GIF) used 18/12/2009 roman.gerlach@uni-jena.de 6
NASA GIOVANNI (cont.) Giovanni-3 Analytical Services Animation Lat-Lon Area Plot, time-averaged Lat-Lon Plot, Difference Map Latitude-Time Hovmöller plot Longitude-Time Hovmöller plot Correlation Plot Scatter Plot stand-alone solution Scatter Plot, Time-averaged Time Series, Area-averaged no standard interfaces for data exchange with other systems yet (!) Time Series Difference only predefined data products available (but growing number) 18/12/2009 7
What s missing? flexibility and openness interoperability among these existing systems standards and technologies do exist, but only a limited number of implementations to date mitigation between domain specific standards and data models Improved access to data and analysis tools would lead to increased knowledge extraction from existing data 18/12/2009 roman.gerlach@uni-jena.de 8
Approach Generic approach for web analysis service interoperable through OGC Web Services (SOA) can be operated with a simple Web browser, no additional software is needed for the user utilize existing visualization and analysis tools (e.g. R, IDL, ) independent from scale (applicable to any spatial and temporal resolution) independent from data format (standard in- and output interface) Data Provider Service Provider User Data Standard Interface Standard Interface Analysis Service Standard Interface Standard Interface Client Front End 18/12/2009 roman.gerlach@uni-jena.de 9
