Doug Nebert, POC U.S. Geological Survey March 2010 Task AR-09-01a Progress and Contributions

Background and scope for AR-09-01a This Task defines the minimum, common technical capabilities that define the scope of GEOSS and its contributions. Formalized registration of standards, component systems, service interfaces, data, best practices, and user requirements contributed by Members and Participating Organizations promotes interoperability and broad re-use. The scope of this task is to provide architecture and sub-task oversight for the operational components of the GEOSS Common Infrastructure (GCI).

Deliverables & Progress Component and Service Registry GEOSS Clearinghouse status GEO Web Portals status Standards and Interoperability Forum and Registry reported in separate slide set

Outline Objectives, Deliverables & Progress made Shortly describe main goals of the Task and expected deliverables (with time) Issues and Gaps Identify any specific points that would advance progress on this task through broader discussion or agreement with ADC/IOC-CT/ExCom Any other relevant architectural integration issues or gaps Promoting data access Identify how your contributions are made available through the GCI What SBAs or other Tasks do you coordinate with? If relevant, please list any specific issues related to this architectural task to address promoting data access (data sharing guidelines, metadata, data models, semantics/ontologies, data syntax ) slide 4

Component and Service Registry Objectives, Deliverables & Progress made To operate the core Component and Service Registry for GEOSS that is used by Clearinghouse to support GEO-wide search of systems, data, and services CSW ebrim interface is provided on CSR, will add SRU proxy Discovered and fixed a search error that was omitting certain results Integration with SIR for standards pick-list and nomination complete Issues and Gaps Need technical designees to help review, test, and edit registrations on the CSR team: Could SIF members help here? Promoting data access Components have been reclassified to permit links to data sets and centers by URL and data type for real download Data access services are still promoted to provide interoperable access Too few GEO participants are using standard data dissemination methods Coordinate with AR-09-01b (AIP), c (BPR), d (ontology/taxonomy) and specific global data tasks: DA c (OneGeology) and d (Global DEM) slide 5

Component Record Breakdown based on registration affiliation

Component Record Breakdown based on how many affiliated service records

Service Record Breakdown based on service type * * No service type provided referenced, no applicable standards, or affiliated special arrangements

USGS Clearinghouse Objectives, Deliverables & Progress made Build a quick, flexible prototype clearinghouse based on a mapping of the semanticallycommon elements in a variety of formats (CSW ISO, CSW ebrim, FGDC) Operational since June 2009 Harvest using CSW, Z39.50, WAF Development efforts now concentrating on modifications to GeoNetwork Experimentation with OpenSearch, tag clouds of keywords, GoogleEarth interfaces via RSS feeds on collection-by-collection basis Issues and Gaps Major performance issues with >100K records involving both search and presentation of records Naive ingest of both very large and very small collections causes small collections to be "lost" Not all searches produce relevance scores (e.g., spatial footprints, dates, etc., do not) to assist in finding needles in haystacks - sometimes you get back the whole haystack Different profiles under CSW require specialized handling, sometimes manual intervention/programming; parsing XML is not necessarily fully-automated Clearinghouse caching of CSR records can mitigate access issues at the expense of currency of records A tool for validating and checking status of services listed in the CSR should probably be implemented at the CSR Inconsistencies in record types at CSR make searching for particular types of records at the clearinghouses difficult without manual intervention in interpreting the CSR records slide 9

ESRI GEO Web Portal and Clearinghouse Contribution Goals Offer clearinghouse GCI component that supports GEOSS portal(s) and community portals Provide flexible web apps able to consume and mash-up authoritative data and social media information Achievements: GCI at work for Haiti and Chile earthquake response ESRI clearinghouse powered by ArcGIS Server Geoportal Extension Flex GEO Viewer integrating authoritative and crowd-sourced content and social networking

ESRI Future Work As part of AIP phase 3 Geoportal and clearinghouse for GEOSS and community portals Web geoviewer Web Map API and community resource center with samples and source code ArcGIS Online as source of over 1400 maps and datasets Issues and Gaps: Improve the link between CGI and local SDI node providers Support social networking

Primary Objective: Compusult GEO Portal and Clearinghouse To provide a easy to access portal to earth observation data and services. Since Jan 2007, Compusult has delivered the following to help meet the objective: Standards-based GEO Portal Candidate Standards-based GEO Clearinghouse Candidate Hosting Services AIP I & II Participation (soon to be III) Three rounds of portal usability testing Constant updates to ensure alignment with expectations

Current Compusult GEO Portal and Clearinghouse GEO Data Discovery - Search, manage and discover geospatial data from disparate data sources and community portals. Direct access to data pertaining to each of the nine Societal Benefit Areas (SBA) is provided through a dedicated SBA Browser facility. GEOSS Clearinghouse - Publish data and services to the GEOSS Clearinghouse supporting OGC catalogue specifications. All Components and Services Registered in the GEOSS Registry are harvested into the GEOSS Clearinghouse.

Current Compusult GEO Portal and Clearinghouse GEO Data Access/Portrayal - Access, preview and retrieve distributed and/or disparate geospatial data and services through a lightweight mapping client not requiring plug-ins or downloads. Google Earth integration alternative client portrayal interoperability. GEO Collaboration Suite GEO Content Management GEO User Management GEO Data Delivery

Compusult GEO Portal Future Capabilities Compusult GEO Portal Future Capabilities Better presentation of results esp. Distributed Search More Usability enhancements Fast Community portal deployment using individualized look and feel More flexible Security. Single sign on for improved remote catalog access Metric Tracking - users, searches etc. Improved User Management Communities of Interest Dedicated Collaboration Tools More Advanced Content Management System WIKI Interfaces Journal Interfaces

Compusult GEO Portal Future Capabilities Improved Interoperability Federated Search with multiple CSW clients Harvest / Search more community portals Open Search interface More user Centric Users will have customized portfolios of information. This includes saved maps, saved searches, search agents, etc New event service integration Subscription-based Notification service for a wide variety of OGC services including map and sensor services

ESA/FAO GEOPortal Objectives, Deliverables & Progress made (1) Objectives Gateway to Global EO data, information and services that are of interest to the GEOSS user community. Developed by ESA in collaboration with FAO (both GEO PO). Part of the GEOSS Common Infrastructure. Supports all the nine SBAs and benefits of ESA and FAO experience in the relevant fields of application (e.g. Disasters, Climate, Agriculture, etc..). Deliverables Operational and available at the link: Operations started in November 2007 (GEO IV). Based on Open Source components, it can be freely installed and configured at GEO members premises (e.g. to create an SBA Portal). Several updated versions implemented and put in operations in the last year to respond to IOC-TF and user requirements (outcome of usability testing).

ESA/FAO GEOPortal Objectives, Deliverables & Progress made (2) Based on the GEO recommended standards and following the OGC Geospatial Portal Reference Architecture, it provides: Geospatial Portal Service providing interfaces to users for viewing, discovering data, information & services available in GEOSS. Portrayal Viewer Service allowing the display and handling of maps and context information from various sources through WMS services. Interfaces to Catalogue Services of the GEOSS Clearinghouse, allowing distributed catalogue search in an interoperable manner. Browse through a comprehensive directory of service providers. Retrieval of Earth observation education, training and capacity building resources.

Progress Made ESA/FAO GEOPortal Objectives, Deliverables & Progress made (3) It contains more components/services and information than the one available in the CSR (additional info is routinely added for new registered and non registered components/services, content management). Operations secured with same service level as other ESA web portals: Operations of the technical infrastructure of the underlying system, maintenance of the information contained locally within the GEOPortal and insurance of the consistency of the links and interfaces to GEOSS. Able to access all the three available Clearinghouses (one is currently used in the operational path and two for test purposes). Several upgrades implemented and already in operations in the following areas: User Help, FAQ, visualization capabilities, parallel search in local database and clearinghouse to respond to user queries, Google Earth, etc.. Ready for the selection process and to provide support for that phase if needed. Issues and Gaps Major issues are related to the selection phase, to the set-up of a GCI infrastructure able to satisfy GEO needs and to the initiation of discussions on possible approaches for the GCI to support Data Sharing Principles.
