Post Summary The Advanced Materials and Bioengineering Research Centre (AMBER) and the CRANN Research Institute are seeking to appoint a Finance Manager. The appointee s primary responsibility is to provide financial management along with internal/external reporting of the research center s finances. He/She will also have responsibility for the financial management of the wider CRANN institute. The appointee will be expected to take up his/her duties as soon as possible and will report to the AMBER/CRANN Executive Director and the AMBER/CRANN General Manager. 2 2 Standard duties and Responsibilities of the Post: The appointee will have responsibility for the following: Provide financial management and oversight of the AMBER Centre and the CRANN institute. Ensuring financial support is provided to all internal and external stakeholders (e.g. to AMBER Executive & Board, AMBER/CRANN core staff, Principal Investigators, Treasurer s Office, Academic Units, funding sponsors, collaborators). Assist with operational reviews and business planning activities through financial planning and scenario modelling. Work as part of the management team to deliver on the mission of the centre and institute. Liaise with external funding bodies, agencies and partner academic institutions, specifically with large scale external grants from SFI. Liaise with central administration in TCD at both a strategic planning level, and on day-to-day matters. Manage a team of four Finance staff, developing their competencies & skills. Collate and track financial data relative to AMBER/CRANN. Develop budgets, provide variance analysis, and issue cash flow projections. Provide adequate internal control processes and procedures. Compile monthly financial management information. Manage the diverse array of grants and awards to AMBER/CRANN investigators and ensure the maximum return to the research institute from the different programmes. Other ad hoc duties as required. 3 Funding Information This position is funded by the Science Foundation Ireland grant 12/RC/2278 (AMBER Research Centre) Person Specification Qualifications A qualification in financial management, accounting or other relevant discipline is desirable. A minimum of 3 years of financial experience in a comparable position. Knowledge & Experience (Essential & Desirable) A minimum of 3 years finance management, accounting and reporting experience ideally gained in a medium or large organization (Essential). Key competencies required for this position include flexibility, a high level of motivation, energy and enthusiasm, and a commitment to multi-disciplinary team work. Experience in the design, introduction and on-going development of internal finance and system control systems. Applicants must be familiar and comfortable with financial accounting systems and MIS applications, and be able to demonstrate the ability to successfully operate in a complex and challenging environment. Evidence of staff management experience, including performance appraisal and staff development is a necessity (Essential). Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to both manage relationships between AMBER/CRANN and the other stakeholders but also effectively impart financial information to a nonfinancial audience (Essential) Page 3 of 14

4 4 Good problem identification skills and an ability to effect innovative and effective solutions. Demonstrate ownership and accountability for tasks. Previous experience with the University or Public Sector would be an advantage, but is not essential. Experience of grant management in an academic context, and management of industry-academic interactions in this context, is desirable. Skills & Competencies Good relationship management skills. Flexibility and ability to adapt to a diverse environment and a broad range of stakeholders. Area Summary AMBER (Advanced Materials and BioEngineering Research) is a Science Foundation Ireland funded centre that provides a partnership between leading researchers in materials science and industry. Materials science has been described as the science of stuff! We are researching nano and bio materials, including graphene, nanowires, collagen scaffolds - materials that will transform everyday products of the future, from mobile phones to knee implants, batteries to beer bottles. AMBER is jointly hosted in Trinity College Dublin by CRANN and the Trinity Centre for Bioengineering, in collaboration with University College Cork and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. The centre delivers internationally leading materials science research.
