1 FACULTY OF SCIENCE School of Chemistry Royal Society of Chemistry Education Coordinator Ref: RA1172 The Post As part of this team of Royal Society of Chemistry Education Coordinators around the country, the post-holder will coordinate and promote, at a regional level, the activities of the Royal Society of Chemistry Education Department and develop strong and effective networks of contacts across the Eastern Region in both the education system and chemistry outreach community. The role holder will increase engagement with those teaching chemistry, studying chemical sciences, and those involved in employing chemical scientists at all levels. Each Coordinator will have a Royal Society of Chemistry centrally directed and managed programme of work overseen by a Royal Society of Chemistry Programme Manager in the Education Coordinator s region. A local contact in the School of Chemistry at the University of East Anglia (UEA) will manage the role holder and provide support and guidance on a day to day basis. One day per week (pro-rata) the Education Coordinator will be able to support their local department with appropriate outreach activities. Education Coordinators are expected to collaborate with other education providers and organisations within their region such as STEMNET, the Network of Education Science Learning Centres, the Teacher Scientist Network, Local Education Authorities, Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) across the Region, Royal Society of Chemistry local sections and divisions, and a wide selection of schools and colleges. The work of the Education Coordinator will be located in the School of Chemistry at the University of East Anglia. The work undertaken by the Education Coordinator will be based on a set of annually reviewed and locally agreed Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). The Education Coordinator may also be responsible for piloting or trialling new resources and activities, and will showcase these new resources to the established networks. The responsibilities of the post will include: 1) Increasing engagement with, and the confidence of, those teaching chemistry at all levels by some or all of the following methods: Initiating contacts with clusters of teachers, to inform and equip them with upto-date learning resources to enable them to increase their confidence of teaching chemistry through interactive demonstrations of Royal Society of Chemistry resources.

2 Working to ensure uptake and engagement with Royal Society of Chemistry curriculum enhancement and enrichment materials. Working towards gaining one Learn Chemistry Partnership member teacher in every school. Supporting students in Initial Teacher Training in the region, providing them with information and access to Royal Society of Chemistry resources. Providing information and support for the continued learning needs of all teachers through provision of information about Royal Society of Chemistry Continuing Professional Development courses. 2) Increasing interest of under 19 year olds in studying chemistry by: a. Supporting and increasing the number of Royal Society of Chemistry ChemNet members in the region, b. Facilitate the organisation and coordination of local ChemNet events, to provide study and career information to ChemNet members and other young people. c. Promoting and increasing the number of Chemistry at Work events held in the region to provide school students with the opportunity to appreciate the place of chemistry in everyday life and the world of work, with particular emphasis on what is happening in their local area. d. Coordinating with higher education projects run and developed by the Royal Society of Chemistry to promote enthusiasm and engagement for the study of chemistry at HE level (for example, supporting Spectroscopy in a Suitcase in the region) e. Delivering outreach activities and workshops, as defined by the Outreach Team 3) Keeping those parties interested in the study and/or teaching of chemistry at all levels well-informed and ensure access to Royal Society of Chemistry resources by: a. Establishing and maintaining contact with relevant education providers, organisations and authorities. b. Establishing networks of local contacts in schools, universities and industry. c. Brokering relationships between education stakeholders to enable contacts to be made and excellent provision for chemistry to be made available to all students. d. Utilising the expertise and contacts of key partners e. Establishing contacts with local MPs 4) Engaging, enthusing and informing the general public to increase understanding of the importance and impact of the chemical sciences by: a. Organising or supporting others in the organisation of public lectures on engaging and informative topics of interest to non-specialist audiences b. Attending and delivering high impact activities at festivals and events, as identified by the Outreach Team. Supporting members attending smaller events. Sharing feedback and experiences to benefit all. c. Supporting chemistry-based activities in science centres and museums.

3 d. Seeking opportunities to proactively engage with news and other media to develop chemistry-focussed features, in local media channels. e. Engage with major pan-stem initiatives, e.g. the National Science & Engineering Week and STEM Ambassadors, to optimise the impact of our activities 5) Supporting all Royal Society of Chemistry advocates in their promotion of the chemical sciences in the Eastern Region by: a. Promoting the Royal Society of Chemistry Outreach Fund to Members looking to hold activities which will support the aims of the Royal Society of Chemistry. b. Support Royal Society of Chemistry Outreach Programmes in the Regions including, but not exclusive to; Outreach Fellowship Programme, Outreach Award, Outreach Collection and Community within Learn Chemistry and Kit Clubs. 6) Working on local Outreach a. Administering the Spectroscopy in a Suitcase scheme in liaison with the National Coordinator or Regional Super-User as appropriate. This will involve arranging training, liaising with schools, and recruiting SIAS ambassadors. b. Liaising with and assisting with the administering other chemistry relevant outreach activities across the Norwich Research Park as time allows. Examples would be working with the Teacher Scientist Network or administering Salters Festivals of Chemistry. 7) Planning and organisation a. Prioritise own workload within a general schedule and assist senior staff in planning for future work so that resources are available to meet specific objectives 8) Resource management a. Operate independently and be responsible for organising one s own specialist or professional work and advice to meet Royal Society of Chemistry and School of Chemistry objectives b. Assume delegated responsibilities as appropriate. c. Maintain up-to-date records of activities locally and on the Royal Society of Chemistry CRM system and centrally provided spreadsheets. Including, but not limited to, contacts, feedback on Royal Society of Chemistry materials and other intelligence acquired, content of presentations and workshops developed as part of the role. 9) Internal and External relationships a. Be in regular contact with University line manager, other Education Coordinators in the region, Royal Society of Chemistry programme manager for the South East and East of England and work colleagues (including both Royal Society of Chemistry and UEA staff). The precise duties will be agreed in discussion with the Manager/PI. The Project The Royal Society of Chemistry is currently operating ten Education Coordinators across the UK and the Republic of Ireland, three of which are Royal Society of

4 Chemistry staff, based at the London and Cambridge offices. In partnership with universities or other (higher) education providers, these ten positions support and promote the work of the Royal Society of Chemistry, key stakeholders and partners, and develop valuable contact networks. The pilot scheme was so successful that the Royal Society of Chemistry is recruiting a further nine Education Coordinators across the UK to widen the reach of the existing network. The School The School of Chemistry at UEA (http://www.uea.ac.uk/che) has vigorous and successful research portfolios in the areas of synthetic, physical and analytical, and biophysical chemistry. Since January 2001 more than 20M has been spent on research activities from Research Council, EU, charitable and industrial sources. Activities cluster around the Wolfson Materials and Catalysis Centre, the UEA Energy Laboratory, and the Centre for Molecular Spectroscopy and Biology. The School consists currently of 30 research group leaders and has typically around postdoctoral research assistants and postgraduate students. Research Excellence Framework In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework national assessment, the Faculty of Sciences at UEA submitted most of its staff to six units of assessment. Overall, 86% of our outputs, 83% of our research impact, and 96% of our research environment were judged to be internationally excellent or world leading. The School's reputation for research excellence was cemented by the findings of the 2014 "Research Excellence Framework" national assessment, in which it was ranked 10th overall, and 4 th in the UK for the quality of its research outputs. Overall, 97% of Chemistry's research was judged to be internationally excellent or world leading. All of the School of Chemistry s research impact, and all of its research environment, were also judged to be internationally excellent or world leading. 5 Salary will be 24,775 per annum, on point 22 of Grade 6 on the single salary spine. The normal expectation is that starting salary will be at the minimum of the advertised salary scale. Starting date The post is available from 1 May 2015 on a full-time basis for a fixed term period until 31 December Terms and Conditions of Appointment Full details of terms and conditions of employment for Research and Analogous Staff will be made available to the candidate to whom the appointment is offered. Annual Leave Entitlement There is an annual holiday entitlement of six weeks plus statutory (8 days) and customary (6 days) holidays. Superannuation The post is superannuable under the Universities Superannuation Scheme.
