4 On Thursday, January 27, 2011 New Orleans City Center held a building tour of 930 Poydras, a residential mixed use building. The tour was attended by 40 IIDA members and non-members alike and was led by Jack Sawyer of Eskew + Dumez + Ripple. The gathering space is where our meeting was held and includes beautiful custom wood tables for dining, studying, etc. a lounge area with projection TV, exercise facilities, and an outdoor pool/bbq area. The lower floors house restaurant spaces that cater to the community atmosphere. The design of this structure epitomizes downtown, high-rise living at its best. This event was sponsored by EDR. New Orleans City Center and Baton Rouge City Center each held a luncheon lecture, sponsored by Tandus who bought world renowned designer Suzanne Tick all the way from Greenwich Village, NY. Suzanne Tick inspired us with her laid-back, interactive presentation entitled "Instinct, Logic, and Lunacy". She began by describing her background as a junk yard owner's daughter, which taught her to make iconic design with reclaimed materials. She described her process of design and weaving in her New York live/work studio. She works with Tandus designing carpet, as well as with Knoll fabrics and Skyline glass designs. Suzanne described all the intricacies and constraints of each design medium. She concluded her lecture with a breakdown of Instinct (Refuse compels you to do something you love), Logic (Reasoning and parameters of carpet design present new constraints on the design due to manufacturing processes, and Lunacy(complexity of the elements involved is what inspired her designs). After the lecture she welcomed questions and a show and tell of a few of her designs. The Baton Rouge City Center had two gatherings in January. A few members net on a Saturday to help out Habitat for Humanities and had a fulfilling good time. They also held a building tour of the 19th Judicial District Courthouse complete with wine and cheese. In February, Jackson City Center had a CEU presentation sponsored by DIRTT and Interior Elements and was held at Parlor Page 4 of 6

5 sponsored by DIRTT and Interior Elements and was held at Parlor Market. There were 30 people in attendance who all learned about Modular Interior Construction. Around Your Town...
