1 November 2015 In This Issue Neighborhood Issues Extension News County News Quick Links OC Connect 311 Orange County Government Website The Neighborhood Update is the Neighborhood Preservation & Revitalization Division's monthly newsletter. You will receive this publication on the last Monday of each month. Please share this information with your neighbors and neighborhood organization. Program Spotlight Adopt A Fire Station for the Holidays Initiative The Adopt a Fire Station Initiative is in its fifth year and was created to show appreciation to the men and women of Orange County's Fire Rescue Department. They sacrifice so much for us each day by protecting us and keeping us safe. They are always selfless, and this is a great way to give back to them for all their hard work in our communities. The goal this year is to have all 42 fire stations adopted by a civic group, community, local business, or non-profit. More information.. NPRD News Community Connections Workshop Increasing Neighbor Involvement November 14, a.m. to 12 noon 450 E. South Street, Downtown Orlando,

Conway Road, Orlando, This is a FREE program for all Orange County citizens designed to encourage residents to add trees to our environment. Adding trees to the landscape has many long-term benefits. Along with the obvious advantages of shade and beauty, trees provide oxygen, filter pollution, and create habitats for wildlife. In addition, trees replenish our lost tree canopy that has diminished due to storm damage, age, and development. Each county resident must provide proof of residency and will receive up to two trees while supplies last. National Diabetes Prevention Program Tuesday, November 24 ~1pm to 2pm UF/IFAS Extension Orange County 6021 S. Conway Road, Orlando, The National Diabetes Prevention Program is a 16 week course that will begin on Tuesday, November 24. This class is for persons 18 and older who have been screened by their doctor and diagnosed as pre-diabetic. Participants will attend weekly one hour sessions of healthy eating/physical activity coaching and then have monthly maintenance 2

3 sessions for 6 months. This is a FREE course. To register, contact LuAnn Duncan at or at County News Mayor Jacobs' Holiday Toy Drive Be a holiday hero! Join Mayor Teresa Jacobs' Holiday Toy Drive. We invite you to drop off a new, unwrapped toy for a child 18 years-old and under. Collection sites are at designated locations throughout Orange County. More information.. County News Orange County Closed for the Thanksgiving Holiday Orange County will be closed on Thursday, November 26 and Friday, November 27 for the Thanksgiving Holiday. Orange County Utilities Begins Cart Distribution for its New Automated Curbside Collection Program Today residents in unincorporated Orange County will begin receiving their new 95-gallon roll carts, which will be used to collect their household garbage and recycling when the county's new automated curbside collection program goes into effect on January 1. Cart distribution for the over 205,000 households will continue throughout the county until mid-december. Along with the roll carts, residents will receive a "welcome kit" that includes a brochure with guidelines for using the roll carts and answers to frequently asked questions. The kit will also include a magnet for residents to write down their new collection days. Cart distribution will begin each morning between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m., Monday through Saturday. Residents do not need to be home at the time of delivery. Once the roll carts have been dropped off, residents are asked to store them in a safe place until they are permitted for use beginning January 1. Residents will receive two roll carts: a garbage cart with a green lid and a cart for recyclable items, which will have a blue lid. The roll cart for recyclables will also include an in-mold label on the lid to clearly illustrate the items that can and cannot be placed in the roll cart. For additional recycling information, residents will be able to use their smartphones to scan the QR code on the label, 3

4 which will give them access to the Orange County Utilities New Automated Curbside Collection Program website. More information..
