3 American College Experience - Undergraduate Overview The American College Experience - Undergraduate (ACE-U) is designed to provide an engaging, hands-on introduction to higher education in the United States. International students learn how to create a successful admissions application while acquiring the skills to effectively participate in campus life at an American university. Students will have the opportunity to meet with NYU admissions representatives and international student advisers. Participants will benefit from instruction on crafting the professional statement. On the weekends, students will visit universities and participate in campus tours in Boston and New York City. Students will study college-level English and gain a cultural orientation to life and learning at NYU one of the most renowned universities in the U.S. and the world. Prior to arrival in New York, students will complete an online placement test of their English language skills. This will be used to place students in level appropriate classes be used by instructors to create course materials suited to the students English language needs. Curriculum The Successful College Application In this course, students will learn how to complete a successful application to an American university, write an effective personal statement and learn how to efficiently navigate through the visa and application process. ACE-U provides a comprehensive overview of higher education in the US and examines present-day admissions standards that are used by many US colleges and university admissions offices in making their acceptance decisions for international applicants. Visit NYU Colleges & Learn from NYU Admissions Speakers Students will meet NYU admissions officers, international student advisors, and American NYU students to gain valuable advice about preparing for college. Experience Student Life & Communicate on a US Campus Students develop their written and oral skills, expand their vocabulary, and enhance their knowledge related to campus life at an American University. Through engaging role-plays, webbased activities, and short presentations, students will become more proficient and confident in expressing themselves to American students and admissions representatives. Students will have the experience of living on a US university campus and get a sense of what life on a campus is like. Skills focus All ALI classes subscribe to a communicative, interactive, task-based approach to English language learning, and all employ the best teaching practices of the ESL profession. The ACE- U program, as a part-time, learn-by-doing experience engages students in the kinds of activities that they would encounter in applying to and attending a US college or university. In learning about the nature of the admissions process, for example, students will be learning and using new vocabulary. This course focuses on the language skills needed to meet admissions standards and succeed at an American university. Topics include: on-campus interviewing, writing the personal statement, mastering relevant vocabulary and idioms, lecture listening, note
4 taking, small group discussion, participation strategies, writing and speaking creatively about campus topics of interest, and presentation skills. Through using English in real situations and relevant activities, participants gain confidence in the language while learning about the content that forms the basis of the course. Interactive Field Trips Each week, students will take an interactive field trip to a location on campus or in New York City that is related to the college experience. One such class trip is to the Kimmel Center for University Life, the nexus of NYU s campus activity for graduate students, where students will compete in teams in a fun scavenger hunt game with American students. By practicing English skills in real-world campus contexts with other American students, such as at NYU cafeterias & other campus sites, students will gain more confidence and fluency in the language. Students will also receive special guided tours of NYU s state of the art university facilities, such as NYU s residence halls, computer labs, libraries, and sports locations. Course Objectives Participants who successfully complete the program requirements will receive a certificate of completion. By the end of the program, students will be able to use acquired skills to: - Successfully complete a college application - Compose and edit college-level essays and texts, including their personal statement - Identify the appropriate choices for their college goals (safety, best-fit, and reach schools) - Employ oral communication strategies needed to communicate with increased fluency with their peers in the college setting, with a focus on appropriateness, pronunciation, articulation, intonation, stress and vocal projection - Have confidence in their ability to adapt and excel in the overseas college environment - Skillfully present themselves during an on-campus interview - Apply participation strategies, lecture listening, and note taking skills to college learning
