4 Course development rationale ECCQ health programs with 20 years of experiences in utilising MHW approach Australian context: 1 in 7 Australians born in a non-english speaking countries (Census 2011) Some CALD populations are at an increased risk of chronic diseases 1 Health system faces challenges in the provision of accessible culturally competent heath care MHWs have been increasingly integrated in the delivery of culturally responsive health care 2
5 Course development rationale MHWs key responsibilities: Facilitate CALD communities access to health and community services Build individual and community capacity through a range of activities such as: outreach activities, community education, informal counselling, social support and advocacy Deliver culturally tailored health information and education to individual, families and groups
6 Course development rationale Effectiveness of MHW approach was verified through a systematic literature review 3 published by the Australian Journal of Primary Health No qualifications available. Extensive consultation process with relevant stakeholders July 2010 ECCQ received funding to develop the course ECCQ worked with Cunningham Centre as the RTO to develop and deliver the piloted course

It is not only that we give advice to sick people, or anyone that needs for selfimprovement but to see to it, that we listen and help them to their needs. Listen to their concerns and referring them to the right people and groups, makes my day.
14 Course outcomes 50 students enrolled 22 received certificates of attainments 32 completed all 6 newly developed multicultural health units 28 received full certificates and graduated on 25 October 2013
15 Conclusion This qualification will enhance the professionalism of, and help towards establishing a pool of qualified CALD health workers and improve access and standard of health care to CALD populations with a focus on culturally inclusive health service delivery (Judges of the 2013 Health and Community Services Workforce Innovation Awards)
