2 Target Audience Sessions offered at this continuing education activity have been specifically designed for physicians, physician assistants, podiatric physicians, nurses, pharmacists, dietitians, certified diabetes educators and other health professionals. This conference was initiated in 1990 and is now in it s twenty-forth year. It is widely regarded as the most informative and comprehensive professional seminar on diabetes mellitus in south Florida. Teaching/Learning Strategies at this activity include lectures, question/answer interaction, case studies and handouts. Learning Objectives Explain the risk of Alzheimer s disease in the diabetes population and the mechanisms which may result in the increased risk of Alzheimer s disease. Develop a rational strategy for individual diabetes management. Cite the latest advances in diabetes research and prioritize which studies and findings have relevance for diabetes practice and education. Interpret the commonly used laboratory tests for patients with diabetes including their role in diagnosis, management and monitoring for complications. List the benefits and side effects of medications currently used in diabetes management.

3 PHYSICIANS The American Diabetes Association is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The American Diabetes Association designates this live activity for a maximum of 11.0 AMA PRA Category 1 credit (s). Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. DOCTORS OF OSTEOPATHY Category 2 credit will be awarded for formal educational programs that are ACCME-accredited or AAFP-approved. INTERNATIONAL PHYSICIANS The American Medical Association has determined that physicians not licensed in the US who participate in this CME activity are eligible for AMA PRA Category 1 credit. PHYSICIAN ASSISTANTS AAPA accepts certificates of participation for educational activities certified for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit from organizations accredited by ACCME or a recognized state medical society. Physician assistants may receive a maximum of 11.0 hours of Category I credit for completing this program. PODIATRIC PHYSICIANS Affiliate sponsorship has been given by the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) for 11 continuing education contact hours for this activity. NURSES The American Diabetes Association is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s COA. CALIFORNIA BOARD OF REGISTERED NURSING The American Diabetes Association is also a provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider No. CEP This activity is approved for 11.0 contact hours. DIETITIANS The American Diabetes Association is a Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Accredited Provider with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). Registered dietitians (RDs) and dietetic technicians registered (DTRs) will receive 11.0 continuing professional education units (CPEUs) for completion of this program/material. PHARMACISTS The American Diabetes Association is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education, ACPE Provider number The American Diabetes Association designates these sessions as Knowledge-based per ACPE guidelines.
