2 How Learning Made a Difference Success stories from George Brown College Continuing Education students Following a Dream When Marievee Abad moved to Canada, she decided to go back to school. George Brown College provided the skills to help her mix a love of food and photography into a new career. The courses led to industry connections and a supportive network. Read her story on page 22 Reaching the Next Level Lidia D Amata was already working in the legal field but knew achieving the law clerk designation meant more responsibilities and a higher salary. The prep courses at George Brown helped her pass the Institute of Law Clerks of Ontario exams and advance her career. Read her story on page 42 Finding the Right Script David Shamoon was running his own advertising agency, but he had always been interested in writing a screenplay. He honed his craft in the screenwriting courses at George Brown and embarked on a successful career in film, which includes a Genie nomination. 4 Frequently Asked Questions How do I use this calendar? 1 Identify the subjects you want to study. Using the Contents on page i, find the areas of interest that most appeal to you. Area titles appear on the edge of the pages to help you find what you are looking for. 2 Choose the courses you are going to take. When you turn to a specific area of interest, you will find a contents list that outlines its certificate/designation subjects and course subjects so you can browse. 3 Register for the course you have chosen. Visit coned.georgebrown.ca from home or at one of our Student Service Centres, and search for that course. On the course web page, review the dates and times it is offered. Choose the section (CRN) that suits you then register online or in person. Refer to How to Register (page 177) for more details. Certificates and Designations Can I get credit for a course I have taken at another institution? Yes, you may receive a course exemption, but you must officially apply for it in writing. Refer to Course Exemptions (page 180) for more details. Can I get credit for previous work experience or credentials from another country? We do not evaluate international credentials in Continuing Education, but we do offer prior learning assessment and recognition if appropriate. Refer to Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (page 181) for more details. How much time can I take to complete my certificate requirements? Generally, you have three years, but this can vary by department. Refer to Certificate Requirements (page 179) for more details. How do I receive my certificate? Once you have completed all of the requirements, you must request the certificate in writing. Refer to Certificates (page 180) for more details. Courses What do I do if I need a general English or Math assessment? You can book an assessment through the automated telephone booking system. Refer to General English/Math Assessments (page 184) for more details. Is financial assistance available? Yes, in some cases, assistance may be available through the George Brown College Student Assistance Fund. Refer to Financial Assistance (page 176) for more details. How do I get my student ID number and password? They are ed to all new Continuing Education students after registration. Refer to Passwords (page 178) and Student Identification (ID) Number (page 178) for more details. How do I transfer or withdraw from a course? You must make the request in writing. Refer to Transfers (page 180) or Withdrawals (page 180) for more details. Will I receive a full refund if I withdraw? Depending on the course you registered for and when you officially request the withdrawal, you may receive a full refund less a $20 administrative fee. Refer to Refunds (page 180) for more details. 9 Interior Decorating Certificate This certificate is one of the most comprehensive in Toronto and takes advantage of the location of our Casa Loma campus walking distance from Canada s leading interior design wholesale showrooms ( Designers Walk ). The curriculum includes field trips to these exclusive showrooms as well as to museums, art galleries and contemporary and historic homes. Once you have completed the required compulsory and elective subjects, you will have a thorough knowledge of the decorating field and the technical skills needed to work as a professional interior decorator. In fact, the certificate is recognized by the Canadian Decorators Association (CDECA).
