3 Programs of Study FIDM S curriculum is intense, concentrated, and rewarding. The college prepares students to enter the global industries of fashion, visual arts, interior design, and entertainment. Our graduates enter the global market as highly trained professionals, ready to make a contribution. We offer Associate of Arts, Professional Designation, and Advanced Study programs designed to enhance a variety of educational backgrounds. Every program leads to a degree. Our curriculum has been developed, and is continually updated, to reflect the needs of each industry served by our majors. Associate of Arts Degree Programs Associate of Arts Programs are designed for high school graduates or applicants who meet the institution s Ability to Benefit (ATB) criteria. 4 Associate of Arts Professional Designation Degree Programs Professional Designation Programs are concentrated programs for individuals who have substantial academic and professional experience in a discipline and who wish to add a new field of specialization. These are 9-month or 12-month programs of intensive study in one of the college s specialized majors that culminate in the awarding of an Associate of Arts degree. Students from other regionally accredited degree programs have the opportunity to complement their previous education by enrolling in a Professional Designation Program. Programs are offered in the following majors: Apparel Manufacturing Management Beauty Industry Merchandise & Marketing Fashion Design Graphic Design Interior Design Merchandise Marketing (also available on-line) Merchandise Product Development Textile Design Visual Communications Acceptance to the Professional Designation Program is contingent upon: U.S. Students: 1. Possession of a U.S. regionally accredited Associates, Bachelor s, or Master s degree. 2. Degrees may be evaluated to verify that certain liberal arts requirements are met. International Students: 1. Possession of a U.S. regionally accredited Associates, Bachelor s, or Master s degree. 2. TOEFL score of 483/160 (computer based) -OR- successful passing of the FIDM Essay Placement Exam. Associate of Arts Advanced Study Degree Programs Associate of Arts Advanced Study Programs develop specialized expertise in the student s unique area of study. Admission is limited to candidates who possess a prior degree in a related discipline. A prior FIDM degree is required for admission to the Fashion Design Advanced Study Program. 5 The Major of Apparel Manufacturing Management The Apparel Manufacturing Management Program is designed to prepare students for eventual ownership and/or management of a fashion manufacturing company. This applied learner-centered program involves the student in all phases of product and line development, domestic and global sourcing, production planning, use of technology, sales management, financial control, and human resources management. The curriculum stresses the importance of teamwork and effective communication in decision making from the development of the initial concept to the delivery of the finished product. You have access to FIDM s 12,000-square-foot garment district loft that simulates a manufacturing facility, as you study costing, production planning, line development, textile testing, and other applications in the apparel industry. Career opportunities are exploding as companies adapt new technology to methods that have been used for generations. FIDM s program prepares you to meet the demand for highly skilled technicians and management personnel able to bridge the old with the new in this highly charged field. Students in this major may apply for a third-year program in International Manufacturing & Product Development. The curriculum stimulates creative expression in all aspects of fashion design, including fashion sketching, creative design, computer applications, draping, and pattern drafting. 13 The Major of InteriorDesign The Interior Design Program curriculum is a comprehensive program combining theoretical elements of interior design with practical creative approaches to the solution of functional and aesthetic design problems in the living, working, and recreational human environment. Competencies developed by the program include architectural drafting, CAD illustration and graphic presentation skills, design proficiency, and a working knowledge of the materials, resources, and business procedures pertaining to the interior design profession. Completion of the curriculum satisfies the educational requirement for professional membership in ASID and IIDA and enables students to qualify for the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) examination. 21 The Major of TextileDesign The Textile Design Program prepares students for careers in the design and styling of textiles and for the skills required to serve the textile industry in both surface and structural design. While job titles vary widely, graduates of this program work as textile, structural and print designers as well as textile stylists. Graduates have also been involved in the sale and purchasing of fabrics and trim.
