1 Course Description Fashion Design/AP Degree in Business, Design and Technology Common Core projects done by all students from all lines in the 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd semesters TEKO project (1 st semester) The students are introduced to professional communicative tools and basic understanding of aesthetics and idioms. They are made familiar with contemporary well known designers and their characteristics. They learn to navigate in TEKO s facilities on campus, including IT systems, library, functional workshops etc. The project is interdisciplinary and is organized as group work. Lectures related to aesthetics and value philosophy to describe the characteristics of the players in the lifestyle industry are held during the project. Workshops with an introduction to term databases and presentation techniques are incorporated. A lecture showing creative interpretations of the influential designers is given. Team Building (1 st semester) Students should become able to recognize Belbin s team roles and to see the advantage of the different role profiles in a teamwork context. Students should become familiar with their own strengths and weaknesses in terms of the roles they play in a teamwork context. The project provides students with the opportunity of creating a network that involves students from other classes and teams. Value Chain (1 st semester) Students are introduced to the fashion and lifestyle industry, and acquire basic understanding of how a company works. Students should become able to communicate results. Style history (1 st semester) The subject gives the students an insight into stylistic periods during the 20 th century within fashion, architecture, art, design, and society from the Industrialization till today in order to understand the connection between the mentioned elements. Students learn through decoding, describing and visualizing the characteristics of the different stylistic periods. Brand ID & Product development (1 st semester) The students choose a company from another line of business. Product development for a furniture line should be made after they have decoded the company s image and values. The target group of the product must be described. Students should account for all the elements that are relevant to making good product design. They should use relevant style development methods and work out prototypes, and they should also develop and communicate the concept and the
2 function of the product in relation to brand and company. In addition they select and describe materials suitable for the final product. Finally they calculate the consumption of materials and work out relevant technical documentation for outsourced production. During the project students can choose between different workshops regarding product development and product manufacturing methods. Entrepreneurship (2 nd semester) Students should acquire knowledge and understanding of how to set up a business based on an idea. In addition, students should acquire knowledge of the method applied in the 1 st year exam. Work Experience (3 rd semester) The objective of the work experience period is to provide students with the opportunity of acquiring knowledge of the industry as well as an understanding of how to apply theory within the company s different functions the value chain. Students should be able to connect business practices and the theory learnt to as large an extent as possible. The work experience period should qualify students to analyse, assess, plan and carry out tasks/projects with their point of departure in practical issues. Sustainability (3 rd semester) Students should acquire insight into issues relating to sustainability and environmental impact. Electives (2 nd and 3 rd semester) The objective of the electives is to give students the opportunity to add an individual dimension to the compulsory study programme studied. Students can choose among a wide range of subjects; each elective may be of 1, 2 or 4 weeks duration. 1st semester Common Core subjects taught to all classes Design Students get a general introduction to design within the furniture and lifestyle business. Subjects: Technical working sketches Product specifications and materials Freehand sketching and colouring of designs Colour studies and international colour systems. Theory on graphic layout, collage techniques, and practical design exercises
3 Business Students should acquire understanding of the company in an interdisciplinary and supply chain context that focuses on business processes and areas. Global Communication Students should become able to communicate both in writing and orally in professional and industry-related contexts using reasonably varied and correct English. Students should develop their knowledge of issues relevant to their future profession and of issues in the industry and society in general. Students should obtain basic knowledge of terminology used in the industry. Material knowhow, fashion or furniture Students should acquire the background knowledge and understanding required to assess whether a material is suitable for a given product. Likewise students should become able to assess the structure, properties and application of a material. 2 nd semester Projects/Subjects only taught to students of fashion design Art & Form The inspiration for this design project is taken from the use of current art exhibitions. Students choose an art piece and look for form and decoration. These ideas will be interpreted into designing and manufacturing a garment using relevant industrial techniques for making a jersey top. All designs will be presented with additional collages to show the process. Skirt Project Students are introduced to manual pattern construction for basic skirt styles and manufacturing. A selection of different skirts will be sewn in varied materials with different weight and touch. The skirts are used for creating technical working sketches. The design ideas are created through the inspiration from 3-D objects using different sketching techniques. An individual design is chosen and created from idea to final product. The assignment is presented with technical documentation, pattern ready for production, drawn fabric reproductions, and fashion illustrations. Developing a Collection 1 The purpose of Collection Development 1 is to provide students with professional research and analysis tools enabling them to communicate professionally and creatively within design. They learn how to analyse brand identity and target groups and to make a description with correct professional terminology. Students carry out research and trend spotting developing visual inspirational material and generating ideas through the sketching method of identifying form. Finally they make a mini collection for women presented in a collection book used for sales and presentation.
4 Grading Students gain an insight into the proportions of the body and size breakdown and work out documentation for external manufacturers. Focus is on tops and skirts with an introduction to basic grading principles. They analyse measures and silhouettes for actual garments. And they develop measurement charts in practice using different measuring systems. Trousers Project Students analyse the body proportions in relation to trousers fit. They work with how to improve fitting on actual trousers and change patterns accordingly. They work with theory for trousers block and actual pattern construction in size 1:4. Furthermore they work with size breakdown and grading for trousers on both patterns and measurement charts as well as constructing and sewing trouser details using correct industrial methods. Graphic Presentation This subject is to qualify students to use relevant IT programs for technical and creative work. The students get an introduction to Illustrator and Photoshop beginners level. The program functions are presented. Students work with preparation of working sketches for all product groups, templates for documentation, 2-D and 3-D technical sketches. They do image editing and collages, and they work with fashion illustrations and techniques. Students hand in a compulsory assignment. 3 rd semester Graphic Presentation This subject serves to qualify students to use relevant IT programs for technical and creative work. They get an introduction to Illustrator and Photoshop advanced level. They learn how to create prints, label overviews and make trimmings in symbol libraries. The final assignment is a preparation of style view/overview, sales and presentation material. Dress Project Students obtain a basic understanding of developing a concept and designing a dress product as well as developing new innovative silhouettes and inner lines by the use of draping second hand garments on dress forms. They must photograph the draped garments from all angles to be inspired for new designs for making a dress collection. They must line up a number of designs with coherent shapes, detailing, fabrics, colours, and decoration. Students also work with pattern design theory and development of own bodices from a basic block, sewing and fitting the prototypes, basic dress details, e.g. different sleeves and collars and the overall silhouette. A selected design from the line up is pattern constructed, fitted, and sewn in correct fabric. Finally they hand in an assignment with the design process, product and pattern ready for production together with relevant documentation.
5 User-driven Design Students become able to develop designs that add value for the users. They get an introduction to theory and methods behind user driven approach. They make field research to observe and interview consumers and analyse and define the users needs and values as a starting point for design processes. Design is focused on the use of denim and possible finishes and treatments in the styles. 4 th semester Manufacturing Students gain an insight into processing methods used for classic Women s Jacket - cutting, fixation and confecting, and they work out sewing descriptions for a woman s jacket with lining. Developing a Collection 2 Students work with concept development based on trend research. They work individually from idea to final product with a mix of lessons and guidance from teachers. The design part of the project is presented as a portfolio with both design process and final sales material. They create a collection outline based on design development, choice of brand, target group, season, inspiration, colours, and materials. They experiment with graphic layouts and different ways of communicating visually. Students also work with pattern design theory and development of standard bodices from a basic block, sewing and fitting the prototypes. Furthermore basic jacket details e.g. different sleeves and collars/hoods, lining, and the overall silhouette are elements of the pattern design process. A selected jacket design from the collection is pattern constructed, fitted, and sewn in correct fabric. The design portfolio, product, pattern ready for production together with relevant documentation is presented in an oral presentation.
