The two-year Architectural Technician program will prepare you to work alongside architects, designers, contractors and builders. As an architectural technician, you can participate in the design and development of the buildings that define our living and working environments using sustainable building practices. REQUIRED COURSES Learning in state-of-the-art architectural studios with the most up-to-date equipment and software, you will develop a thorough knowledge of architectural drawing and technical design skills, as well as an understanding of sustainable building design and construction materials grounded in current green principles. Courses cover computer-aided drafting and design, construction drawings and architectural presentation, including design drawing, modelling and rendering. You will also learn and apply the concepts of building science, building systems, building codes and contracts. Teamwork in a project-based learning environment is emphasized. *If you enrol in the program in January, you are required to complete semester 2 in the summer (May to August) of the same year in order to continue into semester 3 in the fall. PART TIME STUDY OPTIONS Part-time study options are not available for this program; however, our Continuing Education department offers evening courses and part-time certificate programs in AUTOCAD and Building/Construction Technologies. YOUR CAREER Graduates find employment in many areas of the Architectural, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry working as technical assistants in the AEC or the building industry. As architectural technicians, they participate in the teams that produce design drawings, construction drawings, digital modeling, and fabrication drawings. In addition to the architectural and construction industries, graduates work as sales representatives and also as technicians for manufacturers and suppliers of building products and government building departments. FUTURE STUDY OPTIONS This program shares the first four semesters with the three-year Architectural Technology program and graduates may qualify to transfer with advanced standing into the third year of the Architectural Technology program (T109) 5. Pathways to the Bachelor of Technology degree program are also available from the three-year Architectural Technology program. The Architectural Technology program prepares you to apply current practices of the Architectural, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry, including construction law and contracts, technical writing, specifications, project design and cost planning. In addition to technical design, you will also develop and apply skills in computeraided drafting, 3D rendering and digital modeling, building codes and regulations. In a simulated office environment, students collaborate in teams to complete projects involving site visits, proposals and designs for both new and existing facilities. *If you enrol in the program in January, you are required to complete semester 2 in the summer (May to August) of the same year in order to continue into semester 3 in the fall. INTERNATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES As a student in Architectural Technology, you are eligible to study abroad for one semester and/or to transfer to the Copenhagen School of Design and Technology to complete a Bachelor Degree in Architectural Technology and Construction Management upon completion of two semesters of study and an internship. The Copenhagen School of Design and Technology (KEA) offers practice-oriented higher education for the business community in the form of both business academics and professional bachelor programs. PART TIME STUDY OPTIONS Part-time study options are not available for this program; however, our Continuing Education department offers evening courses and part-time certificate programs in AUTOCAD and Building/Construction Technologies. See coned.georgebrown.ca. FIELD STUDY OPTIONS A co-operative work experience component in the Architectural Technology Program (T109) will be available for a selected number of students. The intake for this co-op program is limited and applications are subject to approval by the academic department (Centre for Construction & Engineering Technologies - CCET). Those who enter the program will complete semester 5 during the May to August semester. The co-op semester will take place from September to December. The 6th semester will be offered through a blend of in person and online studies, allowing students to graduate in April of their final year of study. It will also allow students who have part-time work to continue with it. More details are available through the department. Architectural technologists typically hold important roles with advanced responsibilities as part of a team of professionals in the building design, project delivery and management process. They are employed as computer drawing technologists, project administrators and coordinators, sales and marketing professionals, municipal plans examiners and building inspectors. Graduates may also choose to become entrepreneurs and own architectural drafting and building design businesses. FUTURE STUDY OPTIONS Qualified graduates may be eligible for advanced standing in the George Brown College Bachelor of Technology (Construction Management) degree program. Bridge courses may be required for advanced standing. The three-year Interior Design Technology advanced diploma program prepares you to be an Interior Design Technologist. You will be a valuable member of the design team for building retrofits, renovations and new construction, contributing to the technical design of building interiors by design development of plans, elevations and models. This would include details as wall assemblies, lighting, textiles, fixtures, furniture and ergonomic considerations. Through the application of interior design theory, with principles and practices in architecture, you will learn how to effectively communicate the applied and technical principles of interior design. Each program standard for a postsecondary program of instruction includes the following elements: Vocational standard (the vocationally specific learning outcomes which apply to the program in question), Essential employability skills (the essential employability skills learning outcomes which apply to all programs of instruction), and General education requirement (the requirement for general education in postsecondary programs of instruction). The vocational and components of program standards are expressed in terms of learning outcomes. Learning outcomes represent culminating demonstrations of learning and achievement. In addition, learning outcomes are interrelated and cannot be viewed in isolation of one another. As such, they should be viewed as a comprehensive whole. YOUR CAREER Graduates of this program will be interior design technologists who, with experience and a government Building Code Identification Number, will be legally able to design interiors of buildings. You may work independently as a self-employed interior design technologist or interdependently as part of an interior design or multidisciplinary architectural or building development team. With experience and ongoing professional development, graduates will be able to enhance their professional competence and expand their scope of work. There are employment opportunities in the interior design industry, government and public organizations, with careers in the design of building interiors and systems, fittings and furnishings, staging, preparation and interpretation of material specifications and drawings, sales and marketing, purchasing operations, field and customer service, and management of interior design projects.
