5 About UniSA The University of South Australia is a young and agile institution solving today s challenges by educating tomorrow s professionals. As a University of Enterprise, our efforts are focused on providing economic and social benefits to the nation and the world. Formed in 1991 and built on more than 150 years of creating and applying knowledge, the University has quickly established a global reputation for the quality and creativity of its graduates and the innovative, outcomes-focused relevance of its research. Our global reputation continues to grow. In 2015 the Times Higher Education (THE) ranked the University in the world s top 100 institutions under the age of 50. In the same year, QS World University Rankings placed UniSA in the world s top 350, one of only three Australian institutions under the age of 25 to feature in that world s best list. 9 UniSA Business S c h o o l The UniSA Business School is a comprehensive Business School, known for excellence in research, and in teaching and learning, and has strong links with business and community sectors. The UniSA Business School offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees by coursework and by research. The Australian Federal Government s most recent Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) assessment determined that the UniSA Business School s research is world-class in the broad field of Commerce, Management, Tourism and Services, and in the specific fields of Applied Economics; Business and Management; and Marketing. The UniSA Business School has the highest ranked MBA in South Australia, and one of the top-rated MBAs in Australia. The UniSA Business School MBA was ranked fourth overall in Australia in the 2013 Australian Financial Review BOSS survey of MBA alumni, conducted every two years. It is one of only four MBAs in Australia to have been awarded Top Ten status in each survey since the inception of the BOSS rankings in It has maintained a five-star rating for its MBA for seven consecutive years, awarded by the Graduate Management Association of Australia. 8

10 the school of Marketing The School of Marketing is one of Australia s largest Schools of Marketing and offers both undergraduate and postgraduate coursework degrees in Marketing, and also collaborates with the University s School of Communication, International Studies and Languages to offer a joint degree in Marketing and Communications. The School has approximately 1000 coursework students and 30 research students. The School is home to three leading research clusters- the internationally renowned Ehrenberg-Bass Institute for Marketing Science, the Institute for Choice and the Centre for Digital Video Intelligence. The Centre for Digital Video Intelligence, launched in June 2015, is a large-scale, independent, media science research centre established to facilitate growth in the online video sector. Its core purpose is to translate ad:tech research into tangible insights that maximise return on digital spend. Its research agenda focuses on big questions about content creation, mechanisms for distribution and platform impact. The Centre works with a range of stakeholders including sharing platforms, content developers and ad networks, and brands. The Ehrenberg-Bass Institute for Marketing Science boasts the single largest concentration of marketing science researchers in the Southern Hemisphere. The Institute s research into consumer behaviour is directly sponsored by leading international marketing companies such as Coca Cola, Pepsico, Procter & Gamble, Unilever, BP, Kraft, General Motors, Lion Nathan, Carlton United Breweries, the Australian Grape and Wine Authority and many others. The Institute also conducts a substantial amount of contract research for industry, including qualitative work, internet surveys and modelling work, and regularly wins large government grants. The Institute for Choice, based in Sydney, is a multi-disciplinary team of choice modelling specialists with expertise in understanding and modelling human decision-making in the economic valuation of market and non-market goods, in consumer and business-to-business behaviours and business professionals. 9

12 PURPOSE OF POSITION The Head of School is responsible for the leadership and management of the School of Marketing (the School) in fulfilment of the University s vision, mission and goals. This involves facilitating research, ensuring quality teaching and learning, and fostering a dynamic, engaged and enterprising culture within the School. In particular, the Head of School provides academic leadership to: ensure that the School develops and maintains a strong identity and a clear academic direction. maintain an active research culture in the School. ensure that the School s programs meet students and employers expectations in terms of content and quality, and are well regarded by academic peers and professional bodies. maintain close professional and community links. The Head of School will lead and support appropriate strategies for research, teaching, international and external engagement. The position requires representation of the School within the UniSA Business School and the University, and the development and management of strategic partnerships and collaborations with other educational institutions, external communities and stakeholders. The Head of School is responsible for ensuring that the staff and student representatives of the School are well informed of the University s local, national and international operating environment through the School Board, and are thoroughly familiar with the strategic plans and development priorities of the UniSA Business School and University. The Head of School is responsible for the financial and operational management of the School, under delegated authority from the Vice Chancellor. REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS The Head of School will have a range of key relationships within the University, including: 1. Divisional Pro Vice Chancellor The Head of School reports to the Pro Vice Chancellor (Business and Law), UniSA Business School. 2. Academic Staff and Professional Staff All academic staff within the School of Marketing report to the Head of School. All professional staff within the School of Marketing report to the School Manager. The School Manager reports to the Head of School. 4. UniSA Business School Executive The Head of School is a member of the UniSA Business School Executive which comprises UniSA Business School senior leaders including the Pro Vice Chancellor (Business and Law), Heads of Schools, Deans and Directors. The Head of School will work closely with all members of the Business School Executive to ensure the development and execution of strategy. Key Challenges Ensure sustainable growth of the School in an increasingly competitive environment Adapt rapidly to the changing context of the School and leverage new strategic opportunities Attract, develop and retain leading scholars and outstanding educators Increase the quantity and quality of research publications from staff of the School Increase the research profile of the School, through competitive grants and high impact projects Foster high quality student and staff engagement in the teaching programs of the School Increase the level of industry engagement in the teaching and research programs of the School. CORE RESPONSIBILITIES Academic Leadership Provide leadership to the School in all aspects of its academic operations in particular: Ensure that the School develops and maintains a strong identity and a clear academic direction Ensure that the School s courses meet students and employers expectations about content and quality, and are well regarded by academic peers Ensure that the School is respected by the profession, both nationally and internationally Lead the School s research program and encourage an active research culture in the School Ensure that a national and international perspective is developed and maintained through the School s curriculum, research and marketing activities. 3. School Board The Head of School must ensure that the School Board is kept well informed of the operating environment and priorities of the University and the UniSA Business School, to enable the Board to provide effective advice and support to the Head of School in the management and development of the School. 11

13 Management Manage and develop the School in accordance with University and UniSA Business School priorities, procedures and policies. In particular: Articulate, contribute to, and drive the strategic development of the School in alignment with University and Business School strategies Manage, market, develop, and evaluate the School s programs and courses Manage and report on the processes of student assessment and annual review of student progress Lead and manage the School s annual review and planning processes Evaluate the financial implications of business decisions related to current and future opportunities Prepare and manage the School s budget, including all revenue streams and development funds Oversee the development and maintenance of a staffing profile to meet the School s strategic direction and future development Manage the School s staff, including workload, performance management and development, and staff appointment processes Plan, review and manage physical resources, such as specialised teaching and research equipment, and space allocations for teaching and non-teaching activities Implement and monitor relevant University policies. Other Responsibilities Ensure the continued growth of the School through developing and supporting appropriate strategies for international activities, research, consultancy and enrolments. Provide strong representation for the School both internally and externally, develop and manage strategic partnerships, and collaborate with other educational institutions, external communities, professional associations and stakeholders. Contribute to the leadership and management of the UniSA Business School and University. PERSONAL WORKLOAD & ACCOUNTABILITIES The workload allocation of a Head of School will take account of the time to discharge these duties effectively while maintaining an international research profile. A Head of School will usually maintain a teaching load of one course, negotiated with the Pro Vice Chancellor (Business and Law). The Head of School will formally meet the Pro Vice Chancellor (Business and Law) for an annual performance review and to agree on performance targets for the coming year. In addition to this formal meeting, it is expected that there will be regular and more informal performance conversations throughout the year. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Pursuant to the Children s Protection Act 1993 (SA), this position has been deemed prescribed. It is an inherent requirement of the position that the staff member maintains a current Criminal History Assessment determining them fit to work with children. UNIVERSITY REQUIREMENTS 1. Maintain current knowledge of the activities undertaken in their area of responsibility. Ensure that adequate and effective resources are provided to eliminate or mitigate risk. Arrange to be advised of adverse situations by their staff through effective reporting processes. Monitor and measure progress against planned activities. Follow reasonable instructions, work procedures and practices to maintain the health and safety of yourself and others. Report all identified work place hazards and incidents. 3. Performance Development and Management Participate in the University s Performance Development and Management process. 12

14 Selection Criteria Essential 1. A doctorate and an international academic profile in the discipline of marketing and equivalent professional leadership experience. 2. Highly developed people management skills with a strong team focus and exceptional leadership to act as a unifying focus for a diverse team and provide a culture of teaching, learning and research excellence to achieve strategic outcomes. 3. Deomonstrated leadership to enhance the research quality within the School of Marketing including successful supervision of PhD students and mentoring staff. 4. Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor others to engage with professional bodies, government and industry to craft research programs, gain external research funding and have an impact on policy and practice. 5. The ability to think and act strategically including the ability to plan and to deliver continuous improvement of programs and courses; to deploy human, financial and other resources effectively; and to manage a broad range of educational and administrative processes. 6. Demonstrated management experience and commercial business skills including financial knowledge necessary to undertake feasibility assessments of program costing and profitability. 7. Demonstrated high level oral, written and interpersonal skills in order to work effectively with staff, industry partners, employers and other allied organisations. 8. Demonstrated capacity to establish and maintain a network of contacts and collaborative activities relevant to the School s programs, both nationally and internationally. 9. The skills to represent the School s interests in the University and the wider community and with relevant professional bodies. Desirable 1. Evidence of a commercially oriented and entrepreneurial approach to opportunities arising in the academic or commercial environments. 2. 16 Attributes of an Enterprising Workforce Crossing the Horizon announced our intent to differentiate UniSA as a true university of enterprise. To help achieve this ambition, the University identified a unique set of five core behavioural attributes, outlined in the diagram below, to guide our development as an enterprising workforce and culture. The city blends a sense of community usually reserved for small towns with the vibrant activity of a capital city. It is beautiful and well-ordered, surrounded by parklands and within easy reach of long, white, uncrowded beaches and the lush green hills and valleys of Australia s premier wine districts. With its rich cultural background, Adelaide is home to a vast array of restaurants and the largest fresh produce market in the southern hemisphere. In fact, South Australia is often regarded as the food and wine centre of Australia. Adelaide is known as Australia s festival capital, hosting the Adelaide Festival of Arts, Fringe Festival, WOMADelaide, Cabaret Festival and OzAsia Festival in addition to an annual calendar full of music, comedy, food festivals and events.
