Formed in 1991 and built on more than 150 years of creating and applying knowledge, the University has quickly established a global reputation for the quality and creativity of its graduates and the innovative, outcomes-focussed relevance of its research. Our global reputation continues to grow. In 2014 the Times Higher Education ranked the University in the world s top 100 institutions under the age of 50. QS World University Rankings placed UniSA in the world s top 350, one of only three Australian institutions under the age of 25 to feature in that world s best list. As South Australia s largest university we have almost 35,000 students, of which approximately 9,000 are international students. The University offers approximately 400 undergraduate and postgraduate programs, both on and off campus, across 17 schools and the UniSA College. These are located within the University s four academic divisions: > > UniSA Business School (includes the School of Law) > > Division of Education, Arts and Social Sciences > > Division of Information Technology, Engineering and the Environment > > Division of Health Sciences. UniSA maintains a strong commitment to teaching and learning, and ranks in the top 10 nationally for the proportion of staff with a doctorate (73 per cent compared to a national average of 64 per cent). In addition, our MBA program is one of only three in Australia to have held a five-star rating for 6 consecutive years (as awarded by the Graduate Management Association of Australia) and in the 2013 International Student Barometer the University s overall average rating was in the top five of participating Australian institutions. The University continues to develop a strong research environment, and has universitysupported research institutes and centres undertaking world-leading research, and is a key partner in 11 Cooperative Research Centres. We are ranked in the top one third of Australian universities for research income, and in the 2012 Excellence in Research for Australia evaluation more than 86 per cent of our assessed research was deemed to be of world-class standard or above. 8 L I V I N G IN ADELAIDE Adelaide is one of Australia s best kept secrets. It was voted Australia s most liveable city in 2013*, ranked the 5th most liveable city in the world for the 2nd year running according to the Economist Intelligence Unit; and is the only Australian city listed in the New York Times top 52 places to visit in *Property Council s National My city: The People s Verdict survey A Mediterranean climate, accessible and convenient location, and world-class education are all enjoyed by Adelaide s residents. The city blends a sense of community usually reserved for small towns with the vibrant activity of a capital city. It is beautiful and well-ordered, surrounded by parklands and within easy reach of long, white, uncrowded beaches and the lush green hills and valleys of Australia s premier wine districts. With its rich cultural background, Adelaide is home to a vast array of restaurants and the largest fresh produce market in the southern hemisphere - in fact, South Australia is often regarded as the food and wine centre of Australia. Adelaide is known as Australia s festival capital, hosting the Adelaide Festival of Arts, Fringe Festival, WOMADelaide, Cabaret Festival and OzAsia Festival in addition to an annual calendar full of music, comedy, food festivals and events. You will find plenty of opportunities to get involved in Adelaide s festival scene. Australia is also a sports-loving nation and Adelaide is no exception. Each year, Adelaide hosts a variety of premier national and international sporting events including street circuit motor racing, tennis and golf championships, one-day and Test Series cricket at the iconic Adelaide Oval, and Australian Rules football, to name just a few. It is also the venue for the internationally acclaimed Tour Down Under cycling event, which features some of the world s top professional cycling teams, including a team supported by UniSA. 7

9 About Research and Innovation at UniSA From the Deputy Vice Chancellor: Research and Innovation Underpinning UniSA s success is a dynamic and agile culture which makes UniSA a rewarding place to work. It is a thriving institution, one that embraces challenge and thrives on solving the pressing societal issues that face our world today and into the future. UniSA continues to establish a global reputation for the innovative, outcomes-focused relevance of its research. Maintaining a strong commitment to address research questions in a range of priority areas, UniSA has distinct Research Institutes and Research Centres, each with the multidisciplinary capacity to engage and deliver positive solutions in a range of priority areas. These include, sustainability, health and medical research, defence and security, cancer, telecommunications, choice, marketing science, advanced manufacturing, materials science and social science research. As a University of Enterprise we engage with industry and end-users globally, our world class research is informed and leading edge, and our graduates are the new professionals driving the national and international economy through their skills, capabilities and innovation potential. In 2013, the Federal Government announced a $A40 million investment to underpin the formation of a new partnership between the University of South Australia and SA Pathology to accommodate and support the growth of the Centre for Cancer Biology. The Centre will form part of the University s significant presence in Adelaide s new health and biomedical precinct to be the southern hemisphere s largest and will be housed in a new facility currently being planned. 8

10 About Research and Innovation at UniSA Continued In 2015 the University has over 1,200 research degree students, including more than 330 international students from 60 countries. UniSA research degree students rate their postgraduate experience at a higher level than the national average on the Postgraduate Research Experience Questionnaire. The second Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) assessment released in 2012 further endorsed the quality of UniSA research across each of our four divisions, with more than 86 per cent of our assessed research rated at or above world-class standard. An overall ratings table of Australian institutions compiled from the results in ERA 2012 saw UniSA ranked 14th out of 39 universities, up from 19th in ERA This is an impressive result for a young university as UniSA continues to achieve recognition for its engagement with industry, government and the community. With involvement in 11 Cooperative Research Centres (CRC) and ranked 2nd nationally for CRC funding received from Commonwealth grants, UniSA is recognised by governments, business, employers and the community for its commitment to research and innovation. As referenced in the Crossing The Horizon Strategic Action Plan (see page 5), the Dean: Research and Innovation will join UniSA at an exciting time as we introduce trans disciplinary Research Themes, as shown below. Professor Tanya Monro Deputy Vice Chancellor: Research and Innovation 9

11 About Research and Innovation at UniSA Continued As an institution with a commitment to the enterprising spirit UniSA has applied collaborative research that has responded to society s challenges and industry s needs. Plastic Automotive Mirrors From fundamental research to your car s rear view mirror Next time you check your side mirrors in your new car take a closer look, the reflection may appear courtesy of a cutting-edge technology created by researchers at UniSA, including Dr Drew Evans (left). The development of the world s first light-weight, robust plastic automotive mirror was also supported by industry partner SMR Automotive and the Cooperative Research Centre for Advanced Automotive Technology (AutoCRC). Designed to make cars safer and environmentally friendly, the plastic mirror, which is less than the width of a human hair, is not only shatter proof but is also 50% lighter than traditional mirrors. This creates benefits for both consumers and the environment with potential savings of 16,864 litres of fuel per annum per 100,000 vehicles and a potential reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of over 400,000 tonnes from now until As a commercial success, the mirrors which are produced exclusively at SMR Automotive s South Australian facility have resulted in new income streams for SMR and the creation of 20 new jobs. From Bench To Bedside A new approach to healing wounds UniSA researchers from a diverse range of fields, are working together to accelerate the body s own repair mechanisms to improve chronic wound treatments by developing a new wound dressing that can regenerate damaged tissues and organs in the body. Professor of Regenerative Medicine, Allison Cowin and her team have been investigating the role of a protein called Flightless I (Flii) in the wound healing process and their studies have shown that when the level of Flii is reduced, wounds heal far better. As they set out to develop an antibody that would essentially mop up this protein Professor Cowin s team noticed that decreases in Flii led to wound improvement 33 per cent faster by day five than wounds left to heal on their own. By combining regenerative therapy with nanotechnology, this research will have long-reaching and positive effects on some of society s most vulnerable citizens, including the elderly, those with burns injuries or chronic diseases. 10
