6 CREATE AN EFFECTIVE NEWSLETTER Newsletters are not just about an image or a look; they are about giving readers what they need to know in a clear, immediate way. Use a simple template. Publisher has newsletter templates One-column template Two - three Columns Place articles in text boxes Side column for brief information Limit Colors and Photos Can distract and overwhelm your readers. Focus on readability, letting the most im0portant information stand out. Black font on white background is the most effective. Yellow Chiller font on red background it not. Larger fonts make titles or headlines stand out. Stick to easy-to-read fonts. Keep articles brief and to the point. Be Creative and have fun. 6
7 2013 National Newsletter Contest Guidelines Duchess Collins, State Chairman Newsletters insure the pursuit of common objectives and facilitate the flow of ideas and information between State and local courts. NEWSLETTERS SHOULD Inform, motivate, and inspire the members. The newsletter is a valuable communication tool and can become a recruiting tool. CONTENT SUGGESTIONS FOR THE NEWSLETTER: NEXT MEETING notification: Include the time, date and location of your next meeting. Acknowledgement of members for service, sympathy, announcements, promotions, etc., makes a newsletter more personal. It also gives information to members that do not or cannot attend meetings. National and State News: Place the most current information from your National and State newsletters. Divide up the news into two or three newsletters. Other Information: Ask your Court Chaplain and District Deputy to write an article or paragraph each month for the newsletter. Website Information: You are connected to a national organization and members need to know how and where they can find current information of national activities. Fill in empty spaces with a related graphic, prayer, poem, recipe, announcements. 7
