7 How to bring ingenuity at work into our day-to-day work Ingenuity: 1. The process of applying ideas to solve problems or meet challenges. 2. The ability to combine ideas. 3. Curiosity. 4. The power of ready invention. Ingenuity at work is our new strapline and you ll soon see it appearing under our logo. Ingenuity isn t about being overly smart, complex or making things more complicated than they need to be. For us, it s about having the confidence to wonder whether the current way is the best way. It s about being inclusive, being honest, being flexible, seeing things from other people s viewpoint and understanding how everyone can play a part in achieving our goals. That s a fact Sterile cleaning of 630,000 clinical instruments a year for Russells Hall Hospital across 14 operating theatres. 80% better through design Richmond Hill Primary School in Leeds, constructed by Interserve to Passivhaus standards, will use up to 80% less energy than conventionally built facilities. 13 In Dubai, we fitted out the highest office in the world. RMD are providing formwork solutions to 3,000 projects around the globe at any one time. We achieved a 125 million saving for Defra through a sustainable workplace model across 186 sites, in over 250 labs and 162 offices. Ingenuity at work 11

15 A strong brand = a strong business Once we all understand what drives our business the things we believe in, how we should act and our vision for success we ll start to reap the benefits of being a strong brand. The first of which is simply having a focus in all our divisions and across all our locations, speaking with one voice and acting consistently. People will learn what to expect from Interserve and we ll work together to meet and exceed expectations. That approach will help us to stand apart from the competition and bring us together as a business to give our customers better reasons to choose and prefer us. Strong brands command loyalty and preference, so we ll be able to compete on value not cost, and all know why we re better. 18 Our values Do the right thing Everybody has a voice, so we listen and encourage openness. We value all views and opinions, we welcome discussion and we treat people as we, ourselves, would want to be treated with respect and patience. Doing the right thing means not accepting that will do, and not walking by when you could make a positive difference. The right thing also means the safe thing and the sustainable thing. Whatever the task in hand, everybody can and should take pride in a job well done a job undertaken with care, and done to the best of our abilities. We are all about believing we can do better. 19 Our vision Redefining the future for people and places There is a great story that, when somebody asked a worker at NASA s Cape Canaveral what she did there, she replied, I help to put men on the moon. The lady was a cleaner. We want everyone that is part of our team to feel that they have a part to play in us achieving our vision too. That from planning and building, to maintaining, servicing and supporting, we are all working to change the future of people and places for the better. Ingenuity at work 17

20 Where we ve come from Although it was only in 2001 that the company became Interserve Plc, our family tree goes all the way back to Begun by the Hughes family, who would continue to be involved in the company s growth and development until 1976, today s foundations were established on the River Thames in London, providing dredging and lighterage services.

21 Where we re going to We are rightly proud of where our brand began and how it has developed and grown to become Interserve as we know it today. Some of the messages and ideas you see in this introduction to our brand you will begin to see come to life as we communicate our values and appeal to everybody that matters. To truly add value to the business, we need to make sure the brand is woven into everything we do and say, every day. Ingenuity at work 19

23 A) Like this. Our emerging sustainability plan for the business is a perfect example of what ingenuity can look like in practice. Unlike many companies who begin by looking inward what can we reduce, save, cut? we began by taking into account the needs of the people and communities we serve and aligned our actions with those. We thought differently, we asked the Why don t we?, I wonder if this is possible? questions. We asked, What can we do about the urgent issues which affect our own future, the future of those who work with us and for us, and the people and communities touched by us? Then we went beyond conventional thinking to measure our Sustainabilities not only financially but also in terms of knowledge, natural and social contribution. It s about doing the right thing and about sustainability becoming an integral part of what we do. And, throughout the process, we ve collaborated with everybody who will be responsible for setting and achieving the goals and targets we believe are needed to reach the outcome we desire to be a more sustainable business, fit for the world that is emerging around us.
