A cube is a multidimensional database that holds data more like a 3D spreadsheet rather than a relational database The cube allows different views of the data to be quickly displayed Cubes are made up of measures and dimensions Serves as the presentation layer of a data warehouse

13 Measures are the numbers in the data that when aggregated makes sense Sales: $ Expenses $ Sometimes items that are not numerical can become measures by being counted Customer count for example Aggregation of Measures accelerates query processing time

14 Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are quantifiable measurements, agreed to beforehand, that reflect the critical success factors of an organization Leading and lagging indicators KPIs visually represent performance based on actual data and the quantifiable measurement KPIs will differ depending on the organization and its goals

15 A measure gives us a value # of Sales: 100 A KPI provides context The goal is 80 sales # of Sales: 100 The KPIs show us visually what the numbers represent

Dimensions bring context to the measures Dimensions are the categories of data analysis When a user requests a report BY something, that something is a dimension Show me my top products by gross margin by product line by state for 2009

18 Hierarchies are arrangements of dimension members into logical levels to speed up analysis Levels are used for drilling up and drilling down in a dimension Members are the items in the level of the hierarchy For example, in a Calendar Hierarchy the members of a Level called Month would be Jan, Feb, Mar, etc.
