Rajan Battish ATD, PE, LEED AP Vice President Mission Critical Rajan brings 18 years of experience in electrical design for mission critical facilities. With a specialization in power infrastructure, Rajan pioneered the 400/230V at 60Hz for large data centers in the United States and has published numerous papers on energy efficiency and data center reliability. He spends significant time with manufacturers, testing and developing their latest designs before they hit the market. We are constantly redefining resiliency by developing innovative and efficient data center designs. 8 Southern California Edison California, United States The Tier III+ SCE Data Center represents a critical element in the operations of this large utility. The 70,000 sf design/build project was awarded on a best value basis to Callison working with Turner Construction. The project assignment includes IT migration and virtualization from SCE s existing data infrastructure facilities. Located in an existing brown field campus, the new facility, designed to LEED Gold standards, promises to become a showcase for the utilities ongoing energy conservation efforts. 9 DFT Data Center (ACC7) Ashburn, Virginia, United States DuPont Fabros Technologies (DFT) has built several large colocation data center facilities across the country but was intent on improving the efficiency of their future projects. They approached Arcadis and two others firms to be part of a design competition to develop their Gen 3 Data Center design standard. Arcadis won the competition by illustrating to DFT the significant energy benefits of Chiller Assisted Cooling that could be implemented without increasing the upfront cost of the mechanical systems. In fact, reducing the peak electrical load of the mechanical systems allowed for a large reduction in the size of the power generation plant. This meant that the overall project capital expenditure per kilowatt of usable computer power would be less than DFT s previous projects. Arcadis was able to save DFT upfront and ongoing costs required to build and operate their future data center facilities. Currently, DFT s ACC7 data center facility located in Ashburn, VA is close to completion of construction and has implemented the first large-scale version of the Chiller Assisted Cooling technology. The next DFT facility to take advantage of this design will be located in Chicago, IL and is set to break ground shortly. 10 Secure Subterranean Data Center Confidential Location Located 200 feet beneath the earth s surface, this subterranean data center site delivers optimal operational advantages. The project is being developed and delivered across various phases, which reference back to Callison s master plan that has been designed to incorporate and exploit the unique context of the limestone cave environment.this project s critical program elements targets high level security, electrical and mechanical resiliency, sustainability and data hall modularity to deliver a concurrently maintainable Tier III collocation data center complex. 11 Confidential Insurance Company Jackson, Mississippi, United States Commissioned to evaluate siting and program options for the development of a new data center facility, RTKL analyzed several locations on an existing campus and adjacent properties. The analysis covered the client s stringent security concerns, operational demands, program adjacencies and development costs. The study generated a new two-story 20,000 SF Tier III data and operations center connected to an existing Services Operations Building (SOB). The centerpiece of the design is a shared meeting area that helps reconcile changes in site elevations locating equipment outside the 100-year flood plain a secure entry zone and an outdoor patio. All building infrastructure systems, code issues and accessibility needs were addressed for existing and new facilities. 12 JHU HPC Data Center Baltimore, Maryland, United States As one of the nation s leading medical research institutions, John Hopkins University identified the need to for a dedicated High Performance Research Computing Facility to provide maximum infrastructure flexibility and rapid deployment. RTKL evaluated seven potential sites, proposing a flexible modular data center with a Day-One critical load of 1.5MW and a final build-out capability of up to 7.5MW critical IT load. The project was separated into three major tasks: utilities into the site; HPC readiness; and vendor selection for the IT container. RTKL managed each task, working closely with the client, local utilities and consultants. For the IT container selection, RTKL oversaw the entire process from developing a comprehensive RFP (with project scope, technical requirements, commissioning support requirements and an anticipated project schedule) to the recommendation of a selected vendor. 13 Intergate Manhattan Manhattan, NY Intergate.Manhattan is a 32-story building in downtown Manhattan that is being rebuilt within the existing shell as a multi-tenant data center. The building on Pearl Street next to the Brooklyn Bridge provides a NY-centric data center hub for east coast firms. The landlord will provide the base mechanical, electrical and telecommunications infrastructure in the lower five floors, which will be distributed to the floors above via 3 large shafts. The 2N systems design will provide an initial 18 MW of power, expanding to an ultimate 40 MW. The first phase of the build-out was opened in September of 2013 and includes all of the systems infrastructure and one Turnkey data center floor. The overall master planning of the building includes seven Turnkey data center floors that will be built by the landlord and fourteen Power Shell floors that can be designed and built by the tenants.
