1 Community Engaged Leaders Application Welcome. Thank you for your interest in the Community Engaged Leaders Team at Weber State University. The Community Engaged Leaders Team is comprised of three teams: Community Research, Democratic Engagement and Service. The Community Research Team is a student-run research program where students collaborate with community organizations to solve community problems through research. Engaged leaders will conduct these projects with the guidance and assistance of faculty members. The Democratic Engagement Team is a student-run democratic engagement program in which students collaborate with community organizations, campus organizations and other students to make available opportunities to solve community problems through the democratic process. Engaged leaders will facilitate these opportunities with the guidance and assistance of faculty members and staff. The Service Team is a student-run community service program in partnership with WSUSA. Student leaders work directly with 19 community organizations to plan service events that engage WSU students in solutions to issues of public concern in the community. Our passion for service and love for people motivate us to change lives, open eyes and improve the community by engaging students in good will. If you are selected as a Community Engaged Leader on the Community Research Team, your positions responsibilities will include: Communicating with community partners about research needs they may have; Designing and implementing community research projects that are requested by community partners; Recruiting students with statistics and research skills to assist with community research projects; Attending weekly meetings with Faculty Adviser and other Community Engaged Leaders for research training and for assistance with community research projects; Recruiting and collaborating with faculty possessing relevant expertise for project completion. If selected, you will be expected to devote 7 hours/week (including meeting time) to accomplishing the duties and responsibilities of community engaged research. Five of the 7 hours will be required to be spent in the Community Engaged Research offices, located at 2955 Harrison Blvd, Ogden, UT If selected, you will be required to attend Community Engaged Leader - Research Team meetings Mondays 12:30-1:20 and Community Engaged Leaders training Wednesdays 12:30-1:20. 2 Compensation will be a $400/semester scholarship for the Fall 2015 and Spring 2016 semesters. Preference will be given to students who have demonstrated quantitative and/or qualitative research experience. This experience may be demonstrated by completion of a statistics course and/or a research methods course, and/or experience collecting, analyzing, interpreting data to solve research problems. Democratic Engagement Thank you for your interest in the Democratic Engagement Team. If you are selected as a Community Engaged Leader on the Democratic Engagement Team, your positions responsibilities will include: Attending weekly meetings with Faculty Adviser and other Community Engaged Leaders for training and for assistance and project collaboration; Recruiting students to assist with projects; Recruiting and collaborating with faculty possessing relevant expertise for project completion; Communicating with others about needs they have. The following positions are available: Voter Registration Coordinate National Voter Registration Day at Weber State University; Coordinate voter registration drives at high schools in Davis, Weber and Morgan counties. Council Connection Collect the calendars for meetings for all city councils in Davis, Weber and Morgan counties and create a master calendar in WeberSync; Coordinate the presentation of information collected at city councils. Income Inequality Initiative Coordinate American Democracy Project events that correspond with the Income Inequality Initiative at Weber State University. icitizenship Coordinate American Democracy Project events that correspond with the icitizenship Initiative at Weber State University. Coordinate monthly questions to be published on the Democracy Wall at Weber State University. Collect the data from the Democracy Wall answers to be assessed by the Community Research Team. College Town Initiative Coordinate the American Democracy Project events that correspond with Ogden City: the two Talk of the Town events specifically as well as any other events that come up throughout the year. If selected, you will be expected to devote 7 hours/week (including meeting time) to accomplishing the duties and responsibilities of democratic engagement. If selected, you will be required to attend Community Engaged Leader - Democratic Engagement Team meetings Mondays 1:30-2:20 and Community Engaged Leaders training Wednesdays 1:30-2:50. If selected, you will be required to attend two training retreats: Friday, April 24th 2:00-7:00pm and Monday, August 24th - Thursday, August 17th. Compensation will be a $400/semester scholarship for the Fall 2015 and Spring 2016 semesters. Positions on the Democratic Engagement Team are privately funded through the Adrian L Maxson Scholarship for Social Justice and the Ronald M and Nora A Axton Scholarship. The following positions are available for the Fall 2015, Spring 2016 academic year: Assistant to the Service Vice President - $750/semester Assist and support the Service VP with the coordination, promotion and implementation of meaningful volunteer opportunities sponsored by the Community Engaged Leaders, Service Team. Directly supervise and provide training to two of the Directors and their teams. Assist the Service VP in his/her absence and/or at his/her discretion. Provide leadership and assist with recruitment of new committee members. Help plan and attend weekly meetings. Expect to provide roughly eight hours each week working on Service Team responsibilities (including meeting times) Director, General Service Programming - $600/semester Manage, support and provide training to the Chairs and committees under the General Service Programming focus (Alternative Breaks, Done-In-A- Day, Eccles Dinosaur Park, GOAL Foundation, Ogden Nature Center, Special Service Events and Wildlife Rehabilitation Center). Attend their service events and become the resident expert in the general service programs. Help plan and attend weekly committee meetings. Help recruit volunteers through WeberSync for the General Service Programming Chairs. Expect to provide roughly six hours each week working on Service Team responsibilities (including meeting times). 4 Director, Youth Programming - $600/semester Manage, support and provide training to the Chairs and committees under the General Service Programming focus (Big Brothers, Big Sisters, Boys and Girls Club, DaVinci Academy, Family Enrichment Center, YMCA and Youth Impact). Attend their service events and become the resident expert in the general service programs. Help plan and attend weekly committee meetings. Help recruit volunteers through WeberSync for the General Service Programming Chairs. Expect to provide roughly six hours each week working on Service Team responsibilities (including meeting times). Chairpersons - $400/semester Alternative Breaks Recruit and supervise trip leaders for three Alternative Break trips: Alternative Fall Break and 2 Alternative Spring Break trips. Provide training to trip leaders in risk management, planning, recruitment, budgeting, community partner vetting, logistics, reorientation, etc. Oversee all of the details for these three trips. Best Buddies Recruit all student buddies (32). Match the student buddies with best buddies. Plan monthly events sponsored under the auspices of Best Buddies that will develop friendships between the WSU and community buddies. Ensure all hours are registered with the CCEL on WeberSync. Fund raise to attend the National Best Buddies conference during the summer. Big Brothers, Big Sisters Recruit WSU students as buddy pairs. Plan monthly events for the Big Brother, Big Sisters pairs in the northern Utah area. Encourage weekly meetings between pairs in innovative ways. Ensure all hours are registered with the CCEL on WeberSync. Boys and Girls Club (Davis County program) Recruit and coordinate volunteers as one-to-one mentors, working with children between the ages of Supervise and plan fun activities for the children and provide a positive impact in the lives of the Boys and Girls Club youth participants. Catholic Community Services Coordinate monthly volunteer efforts for CCS. CCS of Northern Utah provides for the basic needs and creates hope for those that need it most. The Joyce Hansen Hall Food Bank provides an average of 2,300 food boxes each month to families in the Ogden area as the largest food bank in Northern Utah. DaVinci Academy Coordinate monthly volunteer events at the DaVinci Academy. Recruit volunteers as mentors, tutors and students that can bring interesting new lessons to the youth at the Academy. Done-In-A-Day Plan and implement weekly 2-hour volunteer activities in the Service Nook in the Center for Community Engaged Learning. The Service Nook will be open once per week and serve to give opportunities to students who require an on-campus service option. This will also allow students a chance to be productive and serve during their daily free time. Coordinate all activities and schedules. Arrange for publicity and marketing materials. Eccles Dinosaur Park Plan and implement volunteer activities at the Dinosaur Park such as dinosaur repainting, the October trick-or-treat, adventure days and reconstruction projects. You will be able to come with your own ideas to make this program successful. Family Enrichment Center (Davis County program) Organize service events and recruit volunteers in mentoring children, family and fatherhood activities for the youth in this early childhood program. GOAL Foundation Assist with the recruitment and retention of volunteers in the Xterra Triathlon in the month of September, the January Fat Bike Summit and hands-on young runner activities in the schools in the month of October, November, February, March and April. Also assist in the growth development of the young runner program. Habitat for Humanity Page 4 of 9 Community Engaged Leaders Application
5 Organize volunteers to build low-income housing with Habitat for Humanity. Work with and serve on the Ogden/Weber Affiliate Board. Assist with builds on site. Plan and recruit volunteers for neighborhood A Brush with Kindness projects. Ogden Nature Center The Ogden Nature Center is a 153-acre nature preserve in Ogden. This position will plan and recruit volunteers to projects with regard to the environment and occasionally animals. OWCAP During the months of October, November, February, March and April organize monthly mentoring activities with local HeadStart children and volunteers. Plan and implement visits to WSU. Work with OWCAP teachers to provide program-specific activities. During the months of September, December and January, help with the emergency food pantry, surveys, VITA and special projects of the community service block grant. 2 Special Olympics Team Chairs Attend weekly Saturday practices. Assist with travel to competitions and state games. Assist in recruitment of coaches and volunteers. Work with getting proper paperwork in place for athletes. Become familiar with program in order to best serve our local Special Olympics athletes. Special Olympics University Leadership and Engagement Plan and implement monthly awareness and fundraising events for Special Olympics Utah including Avoid the Word and the Polar Plunge. Special Service Events Plan and implement 2 Blood Battles per year (fall and spring). Assist in the planning of Week of Service for WSU Remembers MLK Jr Week of Service. Plan and implement Make-A-Difference Day. Help plan and implement holiday season programs (Christmas Tree Bridge and Angel Tree). Plan and implement the Senior (Citizen) Ball. Weber Cares Continue marketing the food pantry to the Women's Center, Center for Diversity and Unity, Nontraditional Student Center, Counseling and Psychological Services Center and the Dean of students. Redesign publicity and marketing materials as needed. Evaluate the program, adding other WSU departments, when necessary. Collaborate with other departments to organize food drives. Shelve, sort and rotate food, paying close attention to expiration dates on all cans. Remove expired products. Maintain confidentiality of users. Ensure the pantry is staffed from 1:00-3:00 pm Monday - Friday each week. Wildlife Rehabilitation Center Help plan monthly volunteer activities at the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. If you enjoy working with animals of all types, this is the position for you. This is a new position, so you will be able to shape its long-term future. YCC Provide services for low-income populations and people in crisis under the guidance of the YCC. Continue to provide support for the Open Gym Night for YCC youth. Market for volunteers during large events such as Real Men can Cook and Sub for Santa programs. YMCA Recruit WSU volunteers to provide monthly activities for the youth participants of YMCA. Work closely with the Ogden YMCA office to recruit new mentors. Provide educational opportunities when requested. Youth Impact Provide monthly educational activities for the Youth Impact participants. Use your budget to creatively address the needs and goals of this afterschool program for youth. If selected, you will be required to attend Community Engaged Leader - Service Team meetings Mondays 12:30-1:20 and Community Engaged Leaders training Wednesdays 12:30-1:20. If selected, you will be required to attend two training retreats: Friday, April 24th 2:00-7:00pm and Monday, August 24th - Thursday, August 17th. Compensation will be offered for the Fall 2015 and Spring 2016 semesters. A position on the Service Team is privately funded through the Cody Ray Odekirk Humanitarian Scholarship.
