1 Description The College of Arts, Sciences, and Business Call for Applications Undergraduate Student Leadership Council (USLC) and Graduate Student Leadership Council (GSLC) The College of Arts, Sciences, and Business is forming an Undergraduate and Graduate Student Leadership Council. This council will have the capacity to transform and enhance student experiences across the college. The councils operate as an active advising body serving the collective interests of undergraduates and graduate students in the college, providing a communication link between students and administration, and working to enhance the goals of the college and the greater university community. Guidelines Students must be enrolled as CASB majors (CEC/CASB double majors are fine). The seating of the board will be for the 2016/2017 academic year so students must be enrolled for the entire academic year (i.e., graduating no earlier than May 2017). Students must be in good academic and disciplinary standing and have a 3.0 or higher GPA. Application Instructions for the USLC and GSLC Students 1. Read through the bylaws and complete the attached application. 2. Obtain 2 letters of recommendations from faculty or staff. 3. Nomination forms must be submitted to the College no later than Friday, March 11. They can be ed directly to Dr. Yinfa Ma, Associate Dean for Research and External Relations for the College of Arts, Sciences, and Business. 4. Administration from the College of Arts, Sciences, and Business will be in touch after the deadline closes with next steps. Staff/Faculty 1. Please share these documents and help us identify exemplary and dedicated student leaders and encourage them to apply. 2. Consider writing their letters of recommendation. Misc. 2 Undergraduate Student Leadership Council (USLC) College of Arts, Sciences, and Business Missouri S&T Mission Statement The Undergraduate Student Leadership Council (USLC) of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Business (CASB) operates as an active advising body serving the collective interests of undergraduates in the college, providing a communication link between students and administration, and working to enhance the goals of the college and the greater university community. Vision Statement The USLC will serve as CASB s student leadership team representing the undergraduate student body. Members will work closely with the CASB senior administrative team: the Vice-Provost and Dean, the Associate Deans, and the Executive Director of Development. This council will have the capacity to transform and enhance undergraduate student experiences across the college. Objectives of the USLC 1. To represent the CASB undergraduate student body 2. To serve in an advisory capacity to the Vice-Provost and Dean 3. To raise the visibility of CASB and its undergraduate programs 4. To recognize undergraduate student achievements in the college 5. To promote the college and its undergraduate programs to the S&T community and to prospective students Meeting Schedule The USLC will meet monthly when classes are in session. Meetings are typically scheduled for 90 minutes, and an agenda will be made available in advance by the USLC Secretary. The executive committee of the USLC will hold additional meetings as necessary; executive committee meetings will be called by the USLC President.

6 Bylaws for Undergraduate Student Leadership Council (USLC) College of Arts, Sciences, and Business Term of Membership The membership term of the USLC is one academic year; starting the first day of the fall semester and ending the last day of the spring semester. There may be optional meetings/retreats during the summer months. The council members for the following year will be appointed before the last meeting of the spring semester. Members of the USLC in good standing may apply to serve for subsequent terms with the approval of the Vice-Provost and Dean or his/her designate. Qualifications and Selection Process Students must be an undergraduate enrolled full time in a major housed within the College of Arts, Sciences, and Business. Students must be in good academic and judicial standing as defined by Missouri S&T. All members must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 at the end of each semester. Students should typically be nominated by a CASB faculty member, but S&T administrators from non-academic units such as Student Life or Career Opportunities & Employer Relations (COER) may also nominate a student for membership. Students who are interested in serving on the USLC must fill out the application and nomination forms and submit the appropriate letters of recommendation. The CASB senior administrative team will appoint the founding members of the ULSC, including members of the executive committee, but after the first year the President, members of the USLC, and the CASB senior administrative team will work together to review the nomination packets and select the next members of the USLC (this process will exclude any sitting council members seeing reappointment). The membership of the entire council, including executive committee members, is 15 students representing, ideally, all the academic departments within CASB. Dismissal/Resignation of Membership Members can be dismissed from the USLC for the following reasons: GPA falls below 2.5 Poor academic or judicial standing with Missouri S&T Transfer to a different university or change of major out of CASB Three or more unexcused absences from board meetings or activities Inappropriate or unethical conduct that may reflect negatively on the USLC or CASB If a member needs to resign from the council before his/her term has expired, then he/she must provide a written resignation to the USLC President and Secretary.
7 Functions of USLC Create and implement activities for CASB undergraduate students Actively promote CASB and departmental activities through social media, word of mouth, etc. Promote CASB at student recruiting events such as Miner Days and Open House Promote diversity and inclusion within CASB Mentor other CASB students to enhance their leadership skills Provide feedback and recommendations regarding current CASB programming and future CASB student activities Present feedback and suggestions on academic and policy issues to the senior administrative team Work closely with the CASB senior administrative team and the Office of Undergraduate Studies Serve as student liaisons to the Dean s Leadership Council USLC Executive Committee The executive committee of the USLC will consist of a President, a Vice-President, a Secretary, and a Communications Coordinator. Executive committee members are expected to attend CASB events and activities and represent the CASB at Missouri S&T events. 1. President a. Provides leadership to the USLC b. Chairs the USLC meetings c. Calls and chairs executive committee meetings d. Appoints committees and committee chairs as needed e. Sets goals for the academic year 2. Vice-President a. Presides over meetings if the President is absent b. Serves on the executive committee c. Coordinates membership and nomination of new members d. Serves as a liaison to any USLC committees e. Coordinates the attendance of members at CASB and University events 3. Secretary a. Serves on the executive committee b. Keeps records of board actions. c. Keeps, creates, records, and distributes meeting minutes d. Creates and distributes agendas e. Keeps accurate member rosters with updated contact information and term commitments f. Tracks attendance at meetings and CASB and S&T events g. Creates a monthly report to submit to the Vice-Provost and Dean which may include USLC business, CASB activities, existing issues and potential solutions, feedback and/or constructive comments 4. Communications Coordinator
