MONTHLY S TOP FIVE EVENTS TO CHECK OUT THE FIRST MONTH OF THE SUMMER Khaled For millions of people worldwide, Khaled is more than an artist, he s a superstar. Khaled is an Algerian raï musician originally from Oran. He became internationally famous with his break through song Didi in which he mixed traditional raï sound with western influences. Didi sold over a million copies in European, Arabic and Asian countries, and made him more popular than Michael Jackson in India. On the 7th of June Khaled will perform at Trädgårn. The Magnetic Fields The Magnetic Fields is a New York based indie band led by singersongwriter Stephin Merritt. Recent albums released under the name The Magnetic Fields often consist of synth like pop in a 1980s style, underlying clever lyrics which are often heavily ironic.their newest album is called Distortion. Don t miss the chance to see the bittersweet synth pop icons at Lorensbergteatern on the 28th of June! Göteborg Gallop Track 1st of June is the seasonal opening for the Göteborg Gallop track. This is a big thing. Why you might wonder? What can be more fun then spending a day at a race track? Bet money, drink beer in plastic cups, watch muscular horses run like the wind and chat with well dressed jockeys. The race track is located in the green and sunny suburb Säve, which makes this a good location for a day out of the city. The gallop season goes on until September. Göteborg Blues Party You got the Blues? Find out at the Göteborg Blues party held between the 26th and 28th of June. Three days with sixteen different bands whom will blow their horns, shake their saxophones, strum their pianos and drum their drums. The festival is held on the terrace of Villa Belparc in Slottsskogen. For full program visit: The Göteborg Gardens of Lust Starting in the end of June is the exhibition Gardens of Göteborg The best of the best of Scandinavian garden design. Four diverse parks will be a part in the exhibition that is ongoing until September. Göteborg Botanical Garden, Gunnebo House and Gardens, Liseberg Park and the Garden Society of Göteborg (Trädgårdsföreningen) will each offer an unique set up. So take a stroll, breath in, breath out and feel the total relaxation of a garden.

4 2008 MUSIC FESTIVALS With summer comes festivals! Music festivals are for many the ultimate summer experience. No need to worry about wearing clean clothes, fixing that hairdo or getting enough sleep. All focus is on the music and the fun, being with friends and meeting new people. These days when concert tickets cost a smaller fortune the chances to find new favorite live bands are minimal. Hence the festival is an excellent opportunity to store up on new music and find live bands that will rock your world! Pick and choose between the festivals below and make sure to let us know your most memorable festival experience by the end of the summer. WAY OUT WEST Way Out West is an urban based music festival in Slottskogen. No need to worry about who you re gonna have to share that mouldy tent with or whether or not to pack your rubber boots. This is one festival where you can party all night and (actually) get a good few hours of sleep in a clean bed before you hit the concert area again. Way Out West offers a pretty broad selection of interesting acts. The focus is on rock, indie and alternative from both Sweden and the international scene. Way Out West also hosts a number of club nights spread around the city with both live music and DJ s. Entrance is free with the festival pass but club capacity varies between venues so make sure to get there early to ensure you get in. This is celebrated with a two day festival right in the hub of the Göteborg harbour. What could be a better setting for a metal festival? Harsh and salty winds, Götaälvsbron as a back drop and the smell of steal and rust from the ship building yards next door. 5 CLANDESTINO FESTIVAL Clandestino Festival is an event focused on world music, and despite world music being a lame tag the festival is far from... lame. Featuring, and take a deep breath: singer-song writing, hip hop, submarine pop, thumb piano-electronica (eh?), industrial dancehall, dub step, tropicália, bashment, nu skool nyabinghi, ngoni blues, roots reggae, neoflamenco, broken word, soca, breaks, grime, afro beat, etc. After living a somewhat nomadic life, this year s Clandestino Festival will be concentrated on one single location, Storan, in the urban heart of Göteborg, with an exclusive festival area close to the venue. More than 70 artists are arriving from cities, some you will have heard of, some you won t, such as Bamako, New York, Kingston, Lyon, Kinshasa, Barcelona, Tokyo, San Francisco and Bollnäs. Krokstrand is a small village located along the beautiful Idefjorden which separates Sweden and Norway, 20 km east of Strömstad in the north of Bohuslän. It s a historic place where granite from Krokstrand was made into cobble stones and shipped off to Buenos Aires and Montevideo at the beginning of the last century. Whilst they were in Latin America the Swedish granite merchants met with the sensualism of the tango and brought it back to Sweden. Starting out in 1999 as a tangofestival the festival has broadened it s horizons to involve other genres. Every year 6000 people gather at the festival, enjoying the concerts but also to participate in workshops and courses in tango, flamenco and latin musical instruments. Uppsala has become the third biggest music festival in Sweden in just five years. The festival attracts thousands of visitors from neighboring countries, as well as long distance festival goers from all over the world, with the high standard of it s line-up. 6 HULTSFRED Hultsfred is one of the most well-known festivals in Sweden. Every summer people decend on Hultsfreds folkpark for a huge party. The focus is on rock but many other genres are represented. Some would argue that this festival is for a younger crowd, but Monthly think this year s line-up is way to good to be fussy about the age of your mud covered festival comrades The Hives always are cool When: 12th-14th of June Cost: 635kr /one day 1110 kr/two days and 1590 kr/three days Monthly won t miss: Rage Against the Machine, Rufus Wainwright, Babyshambles, The Donnas and the Hives. More info: PEACE AND LOVE Peace and love takes place in Dalarna, Borlänge. This year the line-up is shaping up as the best in Sweden. Peace and Love started as a project to work against violence, racism and xenophobia in Borlänge. But soon developed into a large festival with the charming hope of spreading the message of Peace and Love to all. Along with this ethos their aim is to be more than just a rock festival and to include seminars and workshops as well as music during the festival period. The closest thing to a Swedish Woodstock we will probably ever get to go see. Lady Saw will be at Roskilde Manu the man When: 23rd-28th of June Cost: 695kr/ one day 1295kr/two days Monthly won t miss: Manu Chao, Sex Pistols, W.A.S.P, Social Distortion and Turbonegro More info: ROSKILDE Roskilde Festival is the largest North European music festival and has existed since Bob Marley played the Roskilde Festival in 1978, Talking Heads in 1979, U2 in 1982, Metallica in 1986 and Radiohead in 1997 (just to mention few among countless artists), Roskilde has again and again demonstrated that this is the place to experience new, upcoming names, contemporary stars and timeless legends. If Monthly were to pick one festival this summer. Roskilde would be it. First-class festival atmosphere, good campground and fantastic kanelsniglar (cinnamon rolls). When: 3rd -6th of July. The warm-up begins June 29th. Over the years the festival has become on of the main rock festivals in Europe and attracts fans and media from more than 40 countries This festival has an older crowd this probably explains the slightly more expensive tickets. However, despite the cost the four day passes this year have already sold out. The original focus was on electro music but now the range of acts has grown and Arvika has a wide line-up encompassing many different genres.
