The School of Service Industries includes Care, Hair and Beauty, Hospitality, Sport, Animal Care, Social Sciences and Learning Opportunities. Joan Thorne, Head of School for Service Industries Introduction to the course If you wish to work in the areas of fitness, health and exercise instruction then this course is the perfect option. You will study a variety of subjects spanning the whole spectrum of sport science and fitness leadership, as well as completing a PDA in Professional Training. Please note that students who complete units associated with this additional award may gain access to the Register of Exercise Professionals at level 3. Throughout the course you will develop a wide range of fitness leadership and exercise prescription skills whilst building a good understanding of the key underpinning scientific principles that support practical performance. An emphasis is also placed on developing your confidence, academic research and literacy skills, and your ability to solve problems and work well with others - essential in your preparation for employment or progression to university level study. Entry requirements Applicants should have two relevant Higher qualifications at grade C or above. For those returning to education, life skills and experience in the workplace may allow entry subject to availability. Please note that in this case, evidence of an ability to cope with the academic level of the course would be required.

What subjects will I be studying? In Year 1 you will study: Exercise Physiology and Anatomy Strength and Conditioning: An introduction Exercise & Fitness: Health and Safety Management Core Strength and Posture Nutrition for Fitness, Health and Exercise Health Screening Working Safely and Effectively with Clients Fitness, Health and Exercise: Graded Unit 1 Plan, teach & evaluate a gym-based exercise session Work Experience Exercise Principles and Programming Metabolic Considerations for Personal Trainers First Aid for Sport and Fitness Psychology of Sports Coaching Getting Started in Business In Year 2 you will study: Deliver Personal Training Sessions Planning and Management of personal Training Current Exercise Trends Applied Nutrition Assessment and Prescription Plan, teach & evaluate a gym-based exercise session Applied Exercise Prescription for Specialist Population Groups Applied Fitness Assessment for Specialist Population Groups Mechanics for the Health & Fitness Professional Managing Stress through Exercise & Therapy Fitness, Health and Exercise Graded Unit 2 Assessment methods This course is mainly assessed on a continuous basis through completion of essays, observed practical performances, written evidence, presentations and group-based projects. However, for many subjects you will be required to sit an end of year/end of unit assessment. The course does not include an external end of year examination. Please note that there is a significant amount of research and project-based work in year 2 in order to complete your Graded Units. Dress code Students will be expected to purchase at least one item of College sports clothing. This clothing carries the North East Scotland College logo, is high quality and represents very good value for money. All students accessing Aberdeen Sports Village are expected to wear college kit at all times. Equipment Equipment lists will be provided. Students studying at HND level are also expected to have access to a laptop/similar device for use in class. Course progression Students who successfully complete this course may progress to degree level study at one of our associate universities.

To log into Blackboard your username is your eight-digit student number (e.g ) which is also used in your NESCol address (e.g @nescol.ac.uk). For some forms on StudentNet you must login using your address as the username, but this will be clearly marked where required. The password will be the default password you were issued with, or the password you have used to replace the default. BYOD and Student Helpdesk North East Scotland College has a number of computing rooms and IT services to support particular courses, however on many courses you will be encouraged to bring your own personal device, such as a laptop or tablet - we call this Bring Your Own Device or BYOD.
