Progression to University from Borders College Courses BORDERS COLLEGE can offer a range of Higher National Qualifications that can allow you direct entry to degree programmes. They can also provide you with knowledge and understanding that can be transferred to other qualifications too. On completing an HNC or an HND, you can often go straight into the second or third year of a degree. Our HNC and HND courses also provide both the practical skills you need to do a job and the theoretical knowledge your employer will expect you to have. There are three ways you can progress to University from Borders College Higher Education courses: 1. ADVANCED ENTRY TO UNIVERSITY: 2. STANDARD ENTRY TO UNIVERSITY: Year 4 of a degree Year 4 of a degree Year 3 of a degree Year 3 of a degree HND Year 2 of a degree HND Year 2 of a degree HNC Year 1 of a degree HNC Year 1 of a degree College route University route College route University route Higher Intermediate 2 Higher Intermediate 2 3. ALTERNATIVE ROUTES: These routes are for those who are perhaps working and studying at the same time. This booklet provides information on the range of higher education courses at Borders College and the range of university courses we have articulation agreements with. 3
Borders College Current HNC and HND Courses HNC Administration & Information Technology HNC Business HNC Care and Administrative Practice HNC Early Education & Childcare HNC Electrical Engineering HNC Gamekeeping with Wildlife Management HNC Hairdressing HNC Interactive Media HNC Social Care HNC Sports Coaching and Development HNC and HND Visual Communication (Graphic Design) WHAT IS ARTICULATION? HN Articulation means using a Higher National Qualification (HNC/HND) to progress on to study a degree programme. For further information and advice on your articulation options, please contact the Borders College Advice Centre and arrange an appointment with the Student Articulation Adviser In all cases, to apply for a university place, whether Borders College has an agreement or not, you are required to apply through UCAS (see page 12) by the deadline set by them. It is better to apply as early as possible. More information can be found here: The Articulation Agreements still stand for older qualifications no longer offered by Borders College i.e. HNC Computing, HNC Health Care and HNC Construction. 4
The Benefits of taking the Higher Education Route It gives you the opportunity to study in stages and gain qualifications recognised by employers. Universities welcome applications from college students, appreciating the breadth of experience and commitment to learning gained. Real life work experience is built into our courses. We can support you through the articulation process. Some HNCs allow you direct entry into the second year of a degree programme, and some HNDs allow direct entry to third year. You can enjoy studying in an adult environment whilst living and studying locally, with first class learning support and advice. Studying at Borders College allows you to build your confidence for moving forward either into employment or progressing to a university course. It can be a financially attractive option. Work on articulation partnerships is on-going at Borders College. If you do not find the degree course you are interested in within this booklet, please contact the universities yourself to enquire into HN progression or articulation opportunities. 5
Route 1: Advanced Entry to University STUDENT PROFILE Name: Martha Schofield Borders College Course: HND Visual Communication University Progression: Direct entry to Year 3 of the Design and Digital Arts Degree at Edinburgh Napier University I absolutely loved my time at Borders College. I was a bit worried when I started that I was going to be sitting in front of a computer all the time. There were loads of opportunities to be creative and experimental with more traditional forms of art and I was always encouraged to take an individual approach. Visual Communications felt like art with career prospects - I became aware of all the opportunities available for employment. During the course we worked on two real client projects which gave me invaluable experience of working with real clients. In fact my rebranding designs were chosen by the committee of the Jim Clark Rally. I achieved my HND in Visual Communication, with an A in my Graded Unit and I also won student of the year award which was wonderful. I ve since gone on to 3rd year at Napier University studying Design and Digital Arts. I m able to use the skills, knowledge and processes learned at Borders College. College was quite structured with good support from the lecturers and although I m finding the University environment challenging - I need to do much more myself, it is exciting and feels like the next step towards my new career. If I can do well on my University course it will certainly give me the confidence to pursue a career in the design industry. 6

Route 2: Standard Entry to University STUDENT PROFILE Name: Emily Imray Borders College Course: HNC Early Education and Childcare University Progression: Year 1 BA Primary Education at Strathclyde University I can honestly say it s the best thing I have done. I left Hawick High School after 6th year and was hoping to go to university to study Primary Education but didn t meet my conditions. I also applied to the HNC Early Education and Childcare at Borders College as well, just in case, and I m glad I did. Resentfully, I started the HNC in August 2012, I can honestly say it s the best thing I have done. Being at home for an extra year allowed me to learn to drive, save some money and gave me the time I needed to mature before moving off to university. Although the course was difficult and the work load was high, I really enjoyed the academic study part of the course and I was able to use this learning in my placements which I loved. Entering the HNC straight from school was difficult as most of my classmates had done the NC before this course and had the underlying knowledge that I didn t, but I managed to catch up. As well as studying this, I also sat my Higher English through my school and worked part-time at Johnstons of Elgin in Hawick. The HNC allowed me to gain more qualifications and experience to re-apply to university and by achieving an A in both my Graded Unit and Higher English; I have gained myself a place on the new BA Primary Education course at Strathclyde University in Glasgow. 8

Route 3: Alternative Flexible Options STUDENT PROFILE Name: Debbie Hosie Borders College Course: SVQ 2 Food Preparation, SVQ 3 and SVQ 4 Management Courses Distance Learning at Borders College University Progression: BA in Business & Enterprise at Edinburgh Napier University Debbie works at Scottish Borders Council as Catering Manager. She has worked her way up within Scottish Borders Council from Assistant Contracts Officer. Throughout her time at SBC she has undertaken a range of courses in order to help her progress. She started with the SVQ 2 Food Preparation course followed by an SVQ at Level 3 and Level 4 in Management at Borders College. She then went on to complete her degree at Edinburgh Napier University. My line manager encouraged me to move forward with my SVQ s in Management and this has been very beneficial for me. Although the majority of study was through distance learning, I enjoyed meeting my course tutor once a month and I was also able to get in touch with her on the phone or by if I required any support. I enjoyed studying for my SVQ s, it was good experience and I learned a lot, other colleagues from the Council were also working through the course and it was good to work through some aspects of the course together. The good thing about undertaking an SVQ s is that you could complete the courses at your own pace. Debbie decided to continue her studies and moved on to the BA in Business & Enterprise, a one year flexible degree through Edinburgh Napier University. She was able to articulate on to this course as she had already successfully passed her SVQ Level 4 Management course. My degree at Napier required total commitment for a full year, it was quite hard going but now I have completed it, I feel a great sense of achievement, you certainly learn to manage your time and prioritise whilst on such an intensive course. She and her work colleague Karen have now both gained their degree. 10

The Open University s BA or BSc (Open) degree allows students to choose from a wide range of OU modules tailored to their personal and vocational needs. This allows students to either build on the subject areas studied in college or provides the flexibility to develop skills and knowledge in other subject areas. Students with an HND can count up to 240 points of credit transfer towards the OU s 360 point BA/BSc (Open) with Honours. Similarly, a student with an HNC can count between 95 and 120 points of credit transfer towards the 300 point BA/BSc (Open) or the 360 point BA/BSc (Open) with Honours. Honours degrees in named subjects are also available and further information on credit transfer is available on request. Progression to the OU s Open degree is available for all HNC and HND courses.
