1 The university has a range of geography-related degrees, many taking advantage of the unique environment of our region, providing graduates with transferable skills sought by employers. With degrees in geography; archaeology and environmental studies; environmental science; sustainable forest management; and sustainable development; our graduates are well placed to compete for jobs in a range of sectors. The university now offers an accelerated study Honours degree in Geography which can be completed in three years rather than the traditional four. The degree uses a combination of face-toface and online technology, including collaborative learning tools such as wikis, which enable students to work with others to build online content. The fully online Sustainable Development degree offers an alternative way for young people to study this subject area focusing on the development of rural areas and protection of the environment. Our research-active staff bring their expertise into the classroom and their teaching, at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, reflects their research specialisms. 44% of our research submitted to the Research Excellence Framework 2014 in Geography, Environmental Studies and Archaeology was rated as internationally excellent or world leading. 2 Geography BSc (Hons) This accelerated Honours degree can be completed in three years rather than the traditional four. Studying a mix of physical and human geography, the BSc (Hons) Geography equips students with the wide range of knowledge and skills needed for the modern workplace. Field trips are a valuable and memorable part of studying geography and this course includes visits in the local area, plus the opportunity to take part in residential field trips to the Highlands of Scotland and the Swiss Alps. Year one of the course is delivered over two semesters and years two and three are delivered over three semesters. Graduating after three rather than four years allows students to get out there and start earning, travelling or undertake postgraduate study a year ahead of their peers. Year 2: DipHE/BSc /BSc (Hons) Full-time Highers: BBBC including Geography or science or humanities related subjects. Plus minimum National 5 or Standard Grade or Intermediate 2 in English and Maths. A levels: CCC with Geography preferred. Plus GCSE grade C in English and Maths. F820 Sustainable Development BSc (Hons) This fully online Honours degree, accredited by the Institute of Economic Development, gives students the knowledge and skills to help develop rural areas in a way that is sustainable and protects the environment, making graduates highly employable in this sector. Students have the opportunity to specialise and gain a named award in sustainable development or sustainable development in rural areas; in mountain areas; with renewable energy; or health and wellbeing. Students also have the opportunity to take part in residential study weekends, which provide real added value to their overall study experience. The BSc (Hons) Sustainable Development gives students membership to the Institute of Economic Development on successful completion. 3 Sustainable Forest Management BSc The BSc Sustainable Forest Management, based at the Scottish School of Forestry at Inverness College UHI, gives students the skills and knowledge needed to become a successful forest or arboricultural manager. Students have the option to specialise in either forest management and conservation; or arboriculture and urban forestry. Forestry students must undertake a nine month industry placement in year two; this opportunity is also open to those studying arboriculture. Previous students have had placements with Forestry Commission Scotland and the Northern Ireland Forest Service. Students also have the opportunity to take part in study visits in Scotland, the rest of the UK or Europe. Year 1: HNC Arboriculture and Urban Forestry/HNC Forestry Year 2: HND Arboriculture and Urban Forestry/HND Forestry Entry to year one (HNC Forestry or HNC Arboriculture and Urban Forestry: Highers: C A levels: D (Scottish School of Forestry) D500 This degree builds on industry recognised HNC/D programmes. Environmental Science BSc (Hons) Student s won t find a better classroom in which to study environmental science than the spectacular landscapes of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. The BSc (Hons) Environmental Science helps students develop their scientific and analytical skills through course work in laboratories; as well as their understanding of the processes that shape our natural environment. Students have the opportunity to undertake a residential field module each year to further develop their field skills at locations throughout the region, in some of the most outstanding habitats. In fourth year they also have the chance to engage with external agencies to build up their industrial experience. Year 2: DipHE Year 4: BSc (Hons) Highers: CCC A levels: CC Must include a science subject plus Standard Grade, National 5, or Intermediate 2 Chemistry at grade C or above, or equivalent. F900

4 Archaeology and Environmental Studies BSc (Hons) This Honours degree allows students to combine the scientific aspects of archaeology with the study of sustainability and techniques of field-based evidence and ethics in one of the best natural and archaeological landscapes in the UK. The Highlands and Islands of Scotland offer some of the best nature and heritage conservation sites in the country, and the residential field modules offered as part of this degree allow students to take advantage of these locations to develop their environmental and archaeological skills. Students also undertake a work placement in their fourth year giving them the opportunity to engage with external agencies. Year 2: DipHE Year 4: BSc (Hons) Highers: CCC A levels: CC Highland Theological College UHI Orkney College UHI Shetland College UHI West Highland College UHI VF49 Agriculture HNC This husbandry-based HNC has been designed to provide students with the many practical skills involved in the multi-disciplines of agriculture practice, as well as the theoretical knowledge required to undertake the running of a farm enterprise. The technical knowledge and practical experience gained enhances employability skills and career prospects in arable or livestock farming. Horticulture HNC This course is designed to provide students with a broad knowledge of horticulture and landscape and to develop at a practical level an understanding of the characteristics, growth and use of plants. The course is delivered by very experienced horticulture tutors and an award winning garden designer. 5 Profiles I ve particularly enjoyed the flexibility of the learning, the variety in the module options and the class sizes which are small enough to make lecture time more valuable. Hannah Boyd, BSc (Hons) Environmental Science, BSc (Hons) Geography programme leader Dr Michael Smith talking about the addition of this degree to our provision: Reports show an increasing number of pupils taking up geography and graduates have some of the highest employment rates across academic disciplines. Geographers have a range of transferable skills and are needed to address the environmental, economic and societal challenges we face. Michael s research activity includes urban and rural geography and community development, he also has a focus on the factors which influence the quality of the online learning experience and e-learning pedagogies. UPM-Tilhill need skilled people in a range of occupations from foresters, surveyors, forest engineers, landscape designers from the forest to sawmill. Courses at the University of the Highlands and Islands provide the core skills for anyone thinking of a future career in the forest industry. We are constantly growing our team through our graduate programme and have recently employed Ewan Batchelor from the HND Forestry course.
