From HNC/D to Degree

DID Y KNOW You can study the first two years of your degree at Fife College before progressing to third and fourth year at university?* 2 Think Fife College

Make Fife College Your First Step Towards Getting a Degree If you want to study for a degree, coming to college can be the ideal place to start. It allows you to enter at a level that you feel comfortable at and progress one step at a time, gaining recognised qualifications along the way. It can also help you develop independent study and research skills in a supportive environment. Fife College offers defined articulation routes to degree programmes in partnership with a wide range of universities. By working in partnership with these universities, we make sure that the content of our courses and our delivery are relevant and make articulation possible. Choosing the college route to a degree qualification means that by successfully completing your Higher National (HN) course (either HNC or HND), you receive a recognised qualification, with each year contributing towards your chosen degree.* This means there is no need to repeat a year or re-learn the same things an important point to bear in mind when considering the funding available for Higher Education study. Universities endorse the college route and readily welcome students with appropriate qualifications from college. Some of our agreements with universities even guarantee a number of our students a place on degree courses at university. Studying for your HNC/D at college gives you more options than going straight to university. If a job opportunity comes up that is too good to pass up, you have the qualifications to pursue it. College offers manageable chunks of study and also provides flexibility in the event that your circumstances change, giving you the opportunity to continue with your degree on a parttime basis if that is what you decide to do. We also offer a range of franchise degrees. These degrees are delivered entirely at Fife College, in partnership with our partner universities. See our Franchise Degrees section for more information. What is articulation? Articulation is an agreed pathway between HNC & HND to a degree course at a partner university *Dependent on appropriate passes in the graded units at HN Level Think Fife College 3

CASE STUDY CASE STUDY Lucy Crawford BSc Quantity Surveying, in partnership with Heriot-Watt University. Now working with Glenrothes Fabrications Ltd, Glenrothes. Juggling family life with study and work was the biggest challenge for me. I nearly left in the first few weeks thinking it wasn t for me, but Fife College staff encouraged me to stay and I m so glad that I did because I loved it. Being able to study locally was a huge benefit, as my youngest son was only 2 when I started studying. As part of my course, I gained work experience on a site in St Andrews with Robertson Construction, working alongside the Project Manager which was extremely useful. Daniel Stewart BA (Hons) Accounting with Finance, in partnership with Abertay University. Now working with Havelock Europa, Dalgety Bay. Having 3rd year delivered by the same lecturers I had got to know over the previous two years really helped me and my classmates excel. It allowed for a much closer relationship and, because the classes at college were smaller than the typical lecture at uni, it was easier to discuss and understand the more difficult topics raised. Living in Glenrothes, the classes were very convenient and I had easy access to college resources. I really enjoyed my time at Fife College; it developed me as a person and gave me the skills needed to pursue my career. What is an articulation route? 4 Think Fife College

What is an articulation route? An articulation route is a pathway between an HNC or an HND and a degree programme. The route is agreed between the college and a university and is reviewed annually to ensure that it is still valid. Studying at college can be the perfect bridge between school and university. It provides a similar level of study to university and allows you to experience smaller class groups and develop independent study and research skills in a supportive setting. In some cases, this may be a formal agreement between the college and the university where direct entry to year 2 or 3 of a university degree is possible, following successful completion of an appropriate HN course. To take advantage of an articulation agreement you need to ensure that the HN course you choose progresses to the degree course that you ultimately want to study, as in most cases only certain HN courses offer articulation to specific degree programmes. And remember, even if you apply for a course with an articulation agreement in place, the university may still make you a conditional offer. For example, this offer may stipulate that you will be required to pass your HN qualification and may also specify a minimum grade required in your graded unit. What if I change my mind and want to study a different degree after my HND? You do not have to progress to one of the degree courses specified in the agreement, but if you apply for a non-articulating course then you will need to have all the entry requirements as specified in the university s prospectus and your application will be considered along with all others received by the university. You will also only be able to enter the course in year 1. This is an important point to bear in mind as, if you have studied for an HND, you may not have enough funding left to cover the fees for your entire degree. Fife College will make sure that you receive the support you need to make the right decision for your future and select the right degree for your chosen career. What are the benefits of articulation? Studying an HNC or HND with Fife College then progressing to a degree course at university allows you to study locally, enabling living, study and travel costs to be kept to a minimum. Articulation allows you to progress from college into the corresponding year at university, meaning there is no need for you to repeat a year or re-learn the same things. You are able to keep moving forward in your studies which is important when considering funding for Higher Education study. Some courses also offer an Associate Student Programme and you would sign up to this programme early on in your HN course. Becoming an Associate Student means that you could potentially attend some university events or lectures, have access to university library facilities and the chance to experience a university culture whilst studying at college. In addition, summer school and work experience or placements may be available. There are slight differences in the schemes offered by universities - you will be given information about these differences at the beginning of your HN course and you can sign up where applicable. In some cases, this can guarantee you a place at university on a specific course if you satisfy the entry requirements. What universities have Articulation Agreements with Fife College? Fife College has Articulation Agreements in place with the following universities: University of Aberdeen Abertay University University of Dundee University of Edinburgh Edinburgh Napier University University of Glasgow Glasgow Caledonian University Glasgow School of Art Heriot-Watt University University of the Highlands and Islands Queen Margaret University Robert Gordon University University of St Andrews University of Stirling University of Strathclyde University of the West of Scotland The Open University By working with these partner universities, we continue to develop further articulation opportunities to ensure our offering continues to be relevant to our students. If you have any questions or want to find out more, please info@fife.ac.uk For a comprehensive, up-todate calendar of university open days, visit Think Fife College 5

Building on your HN with The Open University () Fife College offers collaborative degree opportunities in partnership with The Open University where you attend classes at Fife College during your period of study (see our Degree Opportunities section). But did you know, you can also use your HN qualification to progress to other degrees at the? Studying part-time with The Open University using their unique open learning method provides flexibility in a supported learning environment. A BA or BSc degree with the could offer progression from your current HNC or HND to a degree, while also providing a flexible way for you to fit learning around your life or work commitments. courses are offered at different levels (levels 1, 2 and 3), and are mapped to the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF). An HNC is the equivalent to study at Level 1, and an HND encompasses both Level 1 and Level 2 study. Level 3 study at the is Honours Degree Level. Transferring credit from your HNC, HND or SVQ qualification Depending on what you ve studied already, you may be able to transfer credit from your previous studies and begin studying for a degree at the at Level 2 or 3. You can use your existing qualifications to transfer credit and reduce the time it will take you to get a degree with the.* To qualify for a degree, you need to accumulate a minimum number of relevant credits. For a degree without Honours, you need at least 300 credits and for a degree with Honours, you need at least 360 credits. You can use your HNC, HND or eligible SVQs as credits towards the requirements of your chosen degree. For more information on how you can use your current qualifications toward an degree, and on how the credit transfer system works, visit www. open.ac.uk/choose/collegeroutes Support available from partner universities Whilst you are studying on your HN course at college you may have the opportunity to meet staff from several of our partner universities. The university staff will offer you the chance to participate in workshops that will help you gain skills to help you with degree level study. It is strongly recommended that you attend these sessions as it will make your transition to university smoother by ensuring that you have the necessary skills to join a degree course in year 2 or 3. Topics offered in these workshops vary year on year, but usually include themes such as: structuring your reports and essays, using and evaluating sources, academic and critical writing, oral presentations, ethical considerations, and exam preparation and revision. These workshops will be widely publicised across the College, so be sure to look out for posters and flyers. Remember, many of the skills you pick up at these workshops may also be useful for your HN course, so take advantage of them when you can. You can claim credit transfer for your HNC, HND or eligible SVQs towards the requirements of your Open University degree reducing the time it will take to get a degree with the. *Please note, only HN units at SCQF Levels 7 and 8 are eligible for a credit transfer. 6 Think Fife College

Studying for a degree locally was a great option as it was less expensive than studying away from home. 12 CASE STUDY Pippa Harrison Studied HND Fashion: Design and Production with Retail, entered into 3rd Year of BA International Fashion Branding at Glasgow Caledonian University. I had been interested in fashion at school but didn t have much experience of the design side, so studying at Fife College was a great opportunity to gain the experience that I lacked. I loved the course and being at Fife College the lecturers were great and provided lots of relevant industry knowledge. I really enjoyed the class trips; they gave us experience of fashion in a real setting. I learned so many great skills that can be used in the industry and in general too, like team work, working independently and planning skills. It was brilliant to be able to progress into 3rd year at uni. It could have been daunting, but the HND course, study skills and college life prepared me really well for taking the step.
