4 4 What will you study? The Sport and Exercise Science Higher National Certificate curriculum structure contains six modules that provide a rigorous foundation for learning. The modules you will study have been selected from a variety of fields of study within the Sport and Exercise Sciences and include; Anatomy and Physiology, Sport and Exercise Psychology, Training and Fitness, Research Methods, Sport in Society, Biomechanics, Sports Development, Sports Coaching, Skill Acquisition, Analysis of Performance and Functional Exercise Physiology. Each module will be related to Sport and Exercise Science contexts to develop your understanding of their relationship and influence on the development of sports participation and performance. 5 How will you be taught? You will learn through a variety of methods that have been selected to ensure the most appropriate teaching and learning environment is created. Lecturer led sessions will allow you to be guided through your new learning and you will participate in both individual and group based activities; such as role play, research tasks, presentations or discussions. You will regularly have the opportunity to demonstrate your progressive development through on-going summative assessment activities such as creating assignment rationales, creating assignment drafts for discussion during academic support sessions or presentations that demonstrate your application of a study topic. Modules that include practical activity will allow you to take part in a variety of sport or fitness related physical activities, which will include trips to the Sports Lab at CCCU Canterbury Campus. You will also be required to deliver practical activities to an individual/group and where relevant interact with external community links to create employment based learning environments such as local schools or sports clubs for coaching activities. In addition, your independent study skills will be developed through self-directed study activities and assessments. 6 How will you be assessed? A variety of assessment strategies are used all of which have been selected to best suit the learning outcome(s) being assessed. Therefore, assessment may include; essays, case studies, short answer exams, reports, presentations, testing-based practical work and the practical delivery of sessions in coaching or fitness and training contexts. 7 What are the entry requirements? East Kent College and Canterbury Christ Church University encourage and welcome applications from all students with the potential to succeed on this programme. Applications are considered individually and we take into account academic qualifications in addition to paying great attention to the personal statement and the reference(s) provided with the application. An offer of a place on the Higher National Certificate is offered in terms of grades up to a certain number of UCAS tariff points. For example, a typical offer for entry to an HNC is 120 UCAS tariff points. In order to meet this entry requirement an applicant would, for example, need to have gained two A-levels at Grade D or 4

5 above OR achieved PPP for a Pearson National Diploma OR MP for a Pearson National Certificate. Applicants studying on an Access to Higher Education programme will need to achieve a Pass in their qualification in order to progress to a Higher National Certificate. All applicants will be interviewed. 8 How should you apply and how will you be selected? Applications should be submitted through UCAS using the following codes: Institution code name: CANCC Institution code: C10 Campus code: T Sport and Exercise Science (HNC), programme code: C Where will you be taught? You will be taught at the East Kent College Broadstairs Campus with access to additional learning resources (Library and IT) at the Broadstairs Campus of Canterbury Christ Church University. 10 How long will you normally need to study to complete this programme? The duration of this programme of study is one academic year and the delivery is full-time. 11 What will you need to achieve to progress from one level or stage to the next? Successful completion of the HNC in Sport and Exercise Science will enable you to progress onto year 2 of the BSc in Sport and Exercise Science at Canterbury Christ Church University or an alternative Higher Level provider (depending on their entry requirements). 12 What will you need to achieve in order to graduate and how will your overall grade be calculated? The successful completion of each module is required by each student. You will be graded for each item of assessment undertaken and the results of each assessment will then count towards the overall grade for each module. Classification is based on the best 100 credits across the modules counting towards your overall final grade for the programme. (70-100% Distinction; 60-69% Merit; 40-59% Pass). 13 Are there any external bodies involved in the development and approval of the programme? None 5

In order to meet this entry requirement an applicant would, for example, need to have gained two A-levels at Grade D or above OR achieved PPP for a Pearson National Diploma OR MP for a Pearson National Certificate. Applicants studying on an Access to Higher Education programme will need to achieve a Pass in their qualification in order to progress to a Higher National Certificate. 7 Learning, Teaching and Assessment Strategy Students will learn through a variety of methods that have been selected to ensure the most appropriate teaching and learning environment is created. Lecturers will lead sessions to guide students through their new learning and encourage them to participate in both individual and group based activities; such as role play, research 7

8 tasks, presentations or discussions. Teaching will regularly provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate their progressive development through on-going summative assessment activities such as creating assignment rationales, creating assignment drafts for discussion during academic support sessions or the production of presentations that will demonstrate their application of a study topic. Modules that include practical activity will take part in a variety of sport or fitness related physical activities environments, which will include trips to the Sports Lab at CCCU Canterbury Campus, local schools or local sports facilities. Students will also be required to deliver practical activities to an individual/group and, where relevant, interact with external community links to create employment based learning environments such as local schools or sports clubs for coaching activities. Teaching will prepare students for these experiences and lecturers will support and monitor these activities taking place. In addition, students will complete independent study through self-directed study activities and assessments. The Programme uses a rising profile of assessment (see Appendix) that identifies the overall grade from a combination of the outcomes of the assessment elements. Students will be graded for each item of assessment they undertake, the results of each assessment will count towards your overall grade for each module. See the Appendices. The best 100 credits across your modules count towards your overall final grade for the programme. The assessment process is underpinned by a detailed indicative assessment profile included in each module. The assessment details include the learning outcomes which are cross-referenced with each assessment item. The assessment criteria are specified alongside its associated learning outcome. 8 Programme-specific student support and guidance Students can access general study support and support for additional/specific learning needs via the College s Student Central and via the University s I-zone. The College will make available individual and/or small group support for study skills including academic writing. HNC students will also have a weekly programme of individual and small group tutorial sessions provided by the Personal Tutor and/or Programme Director in order to support and monitor student progress. The purpose of the tutorial provision is to: ensure effective communication between staff and student; provide a systematic review of student progress; support the resolution of personal issues affecting academic work either through advice and guidance or through referral to the most appropriate member of the College s Student Support Team. encourage onward progression to employment or university (level 5).
