1 Course Title: BA (Hons) Event Management An award of the University of East Anglia and the University of Essex Subject to validation The information contained within this course specification is correct as at February 11 UCAS Course Code / UCS Course Code: Course Summary Event Management and the Tourism, Hospitality and Leisure industries are major growth sectors on a global basis. They have become one of the largest employers in the U.K. over the last few years. The three year degree in Event Management will prepare you for a career in this expanding industry through developing your skills and knowledge of business and specialist areas. There are a variety of site visits and field trips that support your learning experience. The Event Management industry offers a wide range of careers in an ever-increasing number of countries and needs graduates with the appropriate knowledge and skills and who can benefit from this exciting and varied career path. Entry Requirements Applicants will normally be expected to have had a two year experience of Post-16 study and be at least 18 years old on 1 October of the year of commencing study. Applicants are normally required to have studied A level subject/s through to A2 level. The minimum entry requirement for admission to the degree course for applicants under the age of 21 is normally: UCAS points 240 Or other equivalent award or mix of awards Applicants over the age of 21 without formal qualifications are welcome to apply if they can demonstrate ability to study at this level. Applications are welcomed from international applicants, who must have competence in English Language. Grade C GCSE or an equivalent qualification is normally required by all applicants, national and international. At UCS no applicant judged academically suitable for a course will be refused admission on the grounds of disability without compelling reasons. Course Aims Enable students to have a critical understanding of the and implementation of events. Enable students to gain knowledge in the key areas of event, including ethical, sustainability and safety issues

2 Enable students to develop knowledge and skills of appropriate theories, principles and practice of within the events sector Give students the opportunity to apply knowledge in practical situations Enable students to develop essential skills through reflective practice Learning Outcomes On completing Level Four/Cert HE, you should be able to Clear knowledge and understanding of and reference to the main activities involved in developing and marketing events Knowledge of the underlying principles and concepts associated with the Events, Travel, Leisure and Hospitality industry Coherent development of argument, analysis and sequencing of ideas to develop relevant discussion Development of own learning and professional development in the context of event Evidence of emerging ability to apply knowledge and understanding within the context of an event which may include ethical, sustainability and safety issues Being able to apply a range of business functions with the context of an event Clear logical presentation of academic and practice-based information and analysis through a range of communication methods to specialist and non-specialist audiences An ability to communicate the results of their study/work accurately and reliably, and with structured and coherent arguments; An ability to present and interpret relevant qualitative and quantitative data An understanding of personal and professional needs in order to develop a career in their chosen industry Level Five/DipHE learning outcomes: in addition to level four, you should be able to A thorough knowledge and analytical understanding of, and reference to the factors associated with effective event A clear understanding and appropriate incorporation of the wider context of the event sector and its roles and relationships in industry A knowledge of decision making processes that need to be employed for effective event Being able to develop and evaluate event operations Being able to reflect on own role within an operational team An ability to identify key quality issues and means by which they may be monitored which may include ethical, sustainability and safety issues

This includes developing innovative ways of supporting student learning, standardised assessment information and detailed feedback, strong academic tutorial support and the integration of graduate key skills in module delivery and assessment. At certificate level emphasis is placed on ensuring a sound knowledge of principles underpinning key subjects and the interrelationships between leisure, hospitality, and tourism. It introduces key knowledge and skills needed to manage events successfully. The supportive learning environment encourages students to explore and develop their own learning styles and acquire basic skills relating to research and methods of presenting work. The main teaching methods are lectures, seminars and workshops. At intermediate level teaching and learning are directed towards the application of knowledge and skills gained at certificate level. Students are expected to develop an enquiring attitude towards their study and should be willing to challenge assertions. They will be taking more responsibility for their own learning through extended personal reading and opportunities are given to tackle wider coursework related tasks. The main teaching methods remain lectures and seminars with an increasing focus on student led events to facilitate debate and discussion. At honours level students are required to take a major responsibility for their own learning, exhibiting autonomy and making appropriate contributions to the development of themselves and their peers through the seminar process. Considerable emphasis is placed on developing the ability to evaluate and analyse data from a range of sources in order to synthesise the material and construct evaluative arguments. The main teaching methods remain the lecture and seminar process but with greater expectation of input from students. There are usually two assessments for each module. These may include essays and reports, presentations, seminars and practical industry based projects and examinations

5 Timetable The teaching runs from September till May, including examinations. Full time students will normally spend three full days in class and may also be using another day for practical work. Students should expect to spend at least four hours a week in independent study and preparation. Course Delivery The course is delivered at the University site in Ipswich, at the waterfront Building and Campus North. There are also a range of site visits that support learning, including a field trip. Placements / Work Based Learning / Work Experience Students are given opportunities to experience work based learning and aspects of the industry through site visits and guest lectures that may be used as case studies for discussion and also in assessments. Work experience is gained through Industry Practice which is part of specific modules in the course. Tutorial and Study Support Academic tutorials: At all levels time is integrated into each module for academic tutorial support. Students are expected to consider their own strengths and weaknesses and with guidance from the module tutor agree a possible course of action. Personal tutorials: Students have a personal tutor within their major route with whom they can meet twice a semester. The tutorial system supplies students with both academic and pastoral support. Study skills: The major routes in modules such as Business Skills provide Study skills. This minor route builds in opportunities for students to develop information finding and analytical and evaluative skills as well as presentation and IT skills through the delivery of the module and assessment. This is supported by the central UCS student support services in study, IT and numerical skills at the open study centre. Opportunities on Completion of the Course The post course opportunities will vary depending on the specific combination of studies taken. Teaching students may undertake a one year PGCE. Postgraduate study. Masters in a relevant area. Public sector event development and planning. Private sector event.
