10 MARSEILLE-PROVENCE, 2013 EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF CULTURE What is a European Capital of Culture? A sought-after label The European Capital of Culture is a one-year title awarded to a city or region after an international selection process. Initially created by the European Union in 1985, the title has become extremely sought after. For selected cities, it means increased international visibility over a 12-month period. It has allowed cities off the beaten track, like Lille and Liverpool, to become recognised tourist destinations. Guests of honour: art and culture The aim of the European Capital of Culture programme is to produce a high-quality artistic programme that is accessible to the widest possible audience. This means calling on internationally renowned artists as well as young emerging talents. It will be a unique encounter between local populations, artists, and visitors from all over the world. An unforgettable experience This is an exceptional event for France. The European Capital of Culture rules mean that the title will not be awarded to another French city for the next ten years at least. It s going to be the event of the decade. What s going to happen in 2013? In 2013, Marseille-Provence will be the European Capital of Culture. Already a major European tourist destination, the region will host over 400 cultural events showcasing European and Mediterranean artistic creation. This means a multidisciplinary programme but also unconventional, unexpected and surprising events. Each of the programme s four seasons has been designed to reach the widest possible audience, with exhibitions of great painters and sculptures alternating with contemporary art, shows, parades, festivals, cuisine and design. For tourists and visitors, this is a unique opportunity to discover the real Provence Press Kit Marseille Provence Cruise Club Seatrade Miami March

This is unique opportunity to take part in inaugural events while getting a preview of things to come. The new architecture will transform Marseille s sea front and form one of Europe s first cultural districts. 12 Marseille, a tourist destination on the move! Office du Tourisme & des Congrès de Marseille Marseille, a tourist destination on the move! Marseille is ideally situated in the heart of Provence. It has a rich history dating back 26 centuries but still today has many art and cultural projects! Marseille has established itself as a Euro-Mediterranean metropolis and is very easily accessible either by TGV (Paris-Marseille in 3 hours), or by the improved air communications with the recent low cost airport and the opening of new airlines. Marseille now finds itself competing with the great capital cities of Europe. It has become a real tourist destination for leisure just as much as business. Today the city attracts more than 4 million tourists each year, records more than 15 million hotel stays and contributes to the local economy with financial spin-offs of nearly 700m. Thanks to its exceptional coast (23 beaches, 14 pleasure ports) and 300 days of sunshine per year, Marseille is the ideal destination for open air sports fans. Marseille also offers a complete change of scenery with the Calanques Massif, the future National Park, at the heart of sustainable tourism. The Calanques Massif and its impressive white limestone cliffs that sink into the turquoise water of the Mediterranean extends for over 20 kilometres. Voted as the European Capital for Culture for 2013, Marseille is a city which is appreciated for its authenticity but it maintains a forward thinking attitude in which the greatest international architects will soon leave their touch of genius. Cultural projects such as the Silo, the MUCEM Museum of the Civilisations of Europe and the Mediterranean or the FRAC Regional Collection of Contemporary Art are being developed for display in Press Kit Marseille Provence Cruise Club Seatrade Miami March

13 Marseille also attracts lovers of culture and strong emotion by offering a rich and varied program me throughout the year: Fiesta of the South, great popular gatherings, superb sporting ventures ( Audi M ed Cup, Marathon, Tennis Open etc.) as well as international scale exhibitions and festivals which have m anaged to find a place amongst the greatest. Marseille also invites you to discover its gastronomy through its traditional recipes: bouillabaisse, Piets et Paquets (tripe and trotters) or typical patisserie, such as "navettes". It also has young chefs who will surprise you with their inventive cuisine of exquisite flavours from the Mediterranean. Gérald Passédat, chef of the Petit Nice-Passédat is a member of the very closed circle of 3 star Michelin chefs. In Marseille, shopping is king! From the Old Port to the Panier area, a stroll through this historical part of the city is vital, dotted with strategic stops to see the Marseille crafts. The Maison du Pastis, the boutiques for soap, chocolates, ceramics or ornamental figures all immerse you into an authentic Marseille which preserves the Provencal traditions. But if you prefer design and fashion, you should head to the Opéra or Cours Julien to discover the Marseille designers who create the fashion of today and tomorrow. Thanks to the city's new image and the development of tourism and cruises, the city has also managed to attract the most prestigious brands. Luxury is no longer the reserve of the Côte d'azur Press Kit Marseille Provence Cruise Club Seatrade Miami March

16 The Port continues to invest and thereby encourage the development of cruises for Marseille Provence. In terms of infrastructure, the Port of Marseille (the Port) and the Marseille Provence Cruise Terminal (MPCT, the terminal operator) have been investing heavily for many years in order to meet the equipping needs and to adapt to the increasing size of the ships. The Port has first decided to improve the meeting of ships at docks 2, 3 and 186 by increasing and embellishing the attached cruise terminal, thereby allowing optimised welcoming at the terminal of MPCT shareholders and other clients. In March of this year, the Port carried out a feasibility study into enlarging the North Channel in direct co-operation with the shipowners-clients of the MPCT and the Port in order to improve the access and manoeuvrability of the largest cruise ships in difficult meteorological conditions. In addition, the Port recently launched a tender to recondition the Naval 10 Repair Dock, which is the third largest dry dock in the world. With its impressive size (465 long, 85m wide and a draught of 12.5m) this naval repair dock is capable of holding the new generation of cruise ships (between m). Knowing that today, 65% of the worldwide fleet of large cruise ships is located in the Mediterranean, Marseille is the only port that offers an installation of this size in this area. This project unquestionably adds great value to Marseille as a port of registry. In addition, a specialised centre for the repair of medium sized ships is already operational in docks 8 and 9. For luxury cruises, the Port is developing a new high-class terminal with 2 docks offering direct access to the historic city centre. Thanks to the transformation of this cultural part of the Old Port, created within the programme for "Euromediterranean" city restoration and Marseille Provence 2013, Cultural Capital of Europe, this exclusive clientele will be able to moor in total confidence in a unique environment.
