2 St. Barbara Parish, Brookfield Latin America Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Catholics throughout Latin America and the Caribbean are challenged daily when it comes to nurturing and sharing their faith. Violence, gang activity, and isolation are some of the obstacles which have to be overcome in order for the ministries of the Gospel to succeed in sharing the faith. In the Diocese of Loja, Ecuador, a three-day formation program was conducted for catechists, many of whom work in remote areas. More than 2500 catechists participated in training sessions for rural ministry, youth enrichment, and bible instruction. Many of the participants felt that the experience was informative, enriching, and fortified their spirit as they returned to their parishes. In twenty-two countries of South America and the Caribbean, funds from the Collection for the Church in Latin America provide the assistance that individual parishes need to sustain and enrich the faith of their parishioners. Additionally, your generous support will assist in the formation of seminarians, deacons, religious sisters and brothers, and lay ministers of the Gospel. I am grateful for your support of your local parish, the Archdiocese of Chicago, and the Universal Church. May God continue to bless you and your loved ones in this New Year. You are in my prayers; please keep me in yours. Sincerely yours in Christ, Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I. Sinceramente suyo en Cristo, Cardenal Francis George, O.M.I. Arzobispo de Chicago Coffee and Conversa on Please join the Sisters of St. Joseph for Coffee & Conversa on on Saturday, February 1st, at 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. in Welcome Hall, 1515 W. Ogden Avenue in LaGrange Park. The topic is presented by Sister Mary Jo Curtsinger, CSJ: Gospel Portraits of Jesus. Presenta on descrip on: What are we to make of the fact that the Bible gives us four accounts of Jesus' life? What difference might it make in the way that we pray with images of Christ and God, and witness the Good News to others? Come and join us to get a glimpse of Jesus in these ar s c masterpieces! No RSVP is necessary; this is a drop in event. A free will offering may be made. One future dialogue is scheduled: March 22, 2014: Praying All Ways During Lent by Pat Bergen CSJ. Ques ons? 3 Third Sunday of Ordinary Time January 26, 2014 Page Three From the Pastor s Desk... This past week the Parish Office sent out the Contribution Statements for Some of our parishioners use this statement to assist them with the filing of their income taxes. All of our parishioners who have contributed to Saint Barbara use this as an opportunity to consider their level of stewardship to our parish. If you contribute only with cash and coins and not in a marked envelope, this may be an opportunity for you to formalize your commitment to Saint Barbara Parish and become a registered parishioner. Using an envelope for your contributions offers us an opportunity to thank you for your generosity. It also gives you the ability to monitor more closely how much you give to the parish each month. Studies of church contributions show that it is not so important the amount of one s contributions as it is the necessity of giving intentionally. Intentional givers tend to demonstrate a true stewardship of their church. If you are someone who has become an intentional giver, having registered as a parishioner and using envelopes to make your contributions, perhaps this is an opportunity to reflect on your level of stewardship. As someone who has made the choice to be a Saint Barbara parishioner, once in a while it is good to consider how you contribute your time, talent and treasure. Will you continue your current level of commitment to our parish? Can you offer something more? There is also the possibility of online giving. For some of our parishioners using the services of Give Central makes contributing to Saint Barbara that much easier. There are informational cards available in church explaining the process of contributing electronically. Speak to our Business Manager with any questions. I continue to give thanks to God for the generosity I witness in the good people of Saint Barbara Parish. Whether it be the generosity shown to Pastoral Care and the contributions to our Food Pantry, or the donations made to First Fruits to help us in the maintenance and upkeep of our parish, or the contributions made in the Sunday collection to help us in the day to day operations of our parish all that you give is appreciated. May God bless us in our daily labors with good health and willing hearts, so that we may be able to continue our generous stewardship of Saint Barbara s in Brookfield.

Catechesis as a Ministry: In scripture Jesus says, Go, therefore, and make disciples of all na ons (Mt. 28:19). This call to pass on the faith is just as loud, clear, and urgent for us today as it was when Jesus called his original 12 apostles. For this reason we are asking the adults of the parish who are interested in teaching to consider becoming a catechist for the school year. Don t feel you are ready? Startup classes for catechists are offered through the Archdiocese of Chicago to prepare you to teach. If you are interested, please contact the Religious Educa on Office at or mczmil@stbarbarabrookfield.org. "No accidents, these lives of ours, created by a loving God with magnificent precision. The care and intricacy with which each human life is created---or as Isaiah and the psalmist tell it, kni ed together in our mother's wombs---bring the tragedy of abor on into sharp relief. To snuff out any life desired, created, loved, and given a purpose by God is an unspeakable tragedy." --Archbishop J. Peter Sartain, Archbishop of Sea le, "We are to be 'people of life, people for life'," The Catholic Northwest Progress, January 24, 2013.
