2 St. Barbara Parish, Brookfield Parish Life at St. Barbara Thank you to all who have volunteered for Casino Nights More volunteers are still needed in order for our Parish to get a State License for Casino Nights. The plan is to have enough volunteers that we can possibly have two shifts per night (October 24 th & 25 th ). We are ESPECIALLY in need of DEALERS for Black Jack and Poker training will be provided. This FUN EVENT is being held to generate some extra funds for our Centennial Celebration, October 2015 to October So if you ve still thinking about joining in the FUN we NEED to have all FORMS by AUGUST 1st, 2014 ( sooner is always better). We CAN NOT officially advertise until we have obtained our license. Don t forget to ask family and friends ( must be 21 years and older) if they would like to lend a hand!!! The recep ons a er Mass and the open house were wonderful. I never did anything expec ng accolades, or even thank yous, so this was unexpected and appreciated. While I will not be in an official job here at St. Barbara any more, you can expect to see me around from me to me, especially as this has been my home parish since 1947, on and off. I am looking forward to doing some of the things I didn t have me to do before like visi ng the sick, and hope to con nue to work to feed the hungry. Thank you for making me part of the fabric that forms this parish. You have all become part of the fabric that forms my life, and I will carry you all with me, wherever I am. Sr. Margaret Halligan, CSJ Page Two Thanks to our blood donors Members of our parish and community came together to donate 41 units of blood last Sunday at our blood drive! It was heart-warming to see so many people taking the time to perform this selfless act. These volunteers probably don t see themselves as heroes, but they are the everyday heroes our world needs. They gave the gift of life by donating blood. Thanks to each and every person that helped! St. Barbara s blood drive will get credit if you use code BF01 when donating. Pre-Cana Classes Pre-Cana classes for engaged couples are now being offered here at St. Barbara Parish. Two two-hour classes are held and cover a variety of topics such as communication skills, budgeting and developing a strong marriage. Saint Barbara Parish has a long history of inviting and welcoming men and women into the Catholic faith through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. Looking around our church each weekend, I see many parishioners who have benefitted from being a part of the RCIA and are now serving in various ministries here at Saint Barbara. Many years ago, Art Kovarik became the team leader of this wonderful ministry, following in the footsteps of Fr. Bob Hutmacher and others before him. With the recent death of our dear friend, Art, we are now in the process of re-organizing the RCIA. I would like to know who in our parish has interest in accompanying the adults of our community as they seek to celebrate the Sacraments of Initiation. We look forward to offering RCIA in both Spanish and English; and we will begin the program anew this fall. Please send me an if you are interested in volunteering to be a part of this ministry. I am hoping to gather a team of people together this month to begin readying ourselves for the start of classes in the fall. We welcome Maria Espinosa to the Parish Team. She will be the Director of the Saint Barbara Food Pantry. Maria is a parishioner here at Saint Barbara and looks forward to continuing the good work begun by Sr. Margaret Halligan, CSJ. As Sr. Margaret begins her retirement and Maria begins her new ministry, let us pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit to assist these women in this time of transition. We continue to give thanks for the generosity of so many people in our parish and in our community who make it possible for our Food Pantry to serve so many people each month. Thanks to all those who participated with us in the Fourth of July Parade. A good time was had by all. Once again we are grateful for our parishioners with their horses who help to make the end of the parade so enjoyable to watch for all of Brookfield. Desde el escritorio del Párroco La parroquia de Santa Bárbara tiene una larga historia de dar la bienvenida a hombres y mujeres a la fe católica por del Rito de Iniciación Cristiana para Adultos. Mirando alrededor del templo cada domingo, veo a muchos feligreses que se han beneficiado por ser parte del programa de RICA y ahora están sirviendo en varios ministerios. Hace muchos años, Art Kovarik se convirtió a ser el líder del equipo de este ministerio tan bueno, siguiendo los pasos del Padre Bob Hutmacher y otros antes que él. Con la reciente muerte de nuestro querido amigo, Art, ahora estamos en el proceso de volver a organizar el programa. 6 St. Barbara Parish, Brookfield Volunteer Tutors Needed Join the Congregation of St. Joseph in their Adult Literacy/ESL Program, Tutors on Wheels. The program needs volunteers to teach in Naperville, Glendale Heights, Addison, and Bloomingdale. Teaching takes place in churches, businesses, and social service agencies. Volunteers are needed to teach one hour a week, on a one-on-one basis in a nearby location. Tutoring sessions are scheduled weekday mornings, some late afternoons (and/or evenings). One training day will be provided on Saturday, July 12, 2014 from 8:30 am-12:30 p.m. No prior second language skills are needed. For more information call Are you widowed?
