3 THE STORY OF NEXT GENERATION DATA NGD was formed in 2007 by a group of IT and telecoms professionals who believed that the changing nature of the data centre industry demanded a new style of facility design. While historically data centres had clustered around London Docklands due to massive fibre connectivity costs, a new reality was emerging. Fibre was no longer expensive, but the single biggest operating cost power was rising steadily as supply was squeezed. This, coupled with the price of real estate, employment costs and growing security issues, meant that congested urban areas were no longer the ideal home of mission critical data. WORLD CLASS DATA CENTRES NOWHERE SAFER The NGD team therefore set out to create an out-of-town data centre which would have sufficient space and power for 15 to 20 years of growth in a secure environment with a sustainable low-cost base. They were fortunate to discover an exceptional building that met these criteria in South Wales. When it was announced in July 1996, the LG development at Imperial Park, near Newport, was one of the UK's largest ever inward-planned investments. LG Electronics Inc (LGE), a Korean multinational corporation, and its subsidiary LG Semiconductor (LGS), planned to commit 1.7bn over five years to develop an electronics manufacturing complex and a semiconductor fabrication facility, which when completed were expected to create 6,100 jobs. 137m was invested in the semiconductor fabrication facility (FAB building) before work stopped in 1998 due to the collapse of the Korean stock market. The building remained empty throughout many years of legal wrangling until a final settlement was made by LG in March 2005, which included transfer of the building and surrounding campus back to the Welsh Government. NGD began discussions with the Welsh Government in 2007 and in April 2008 signed an Agreement to Lease the FAB building. Over the next 12 months, NGD invested in upgrading the site to a state-of-the-art data centre shell with 1.4km of military-grade fence, multiple fibre ducts and diverse power feeds. While the shell was being completed, NGD went in search of its first customer and in August 2009 an anchor contract with BT was signed. NOWHERE SAFER. NOWHERE BIGGER. NGD has negotiated ownership of three circuit breakers within the substation, and from there NGD has diverse private 33kV cables connecting to onsite 33/11kV transformers. This effectively gives NGD a private connection to the SuperGrid, thus eliminating the normal distribution network. This private network is critical for three reasons: Firstly, it s cheaper. That s because it eliminates the DUOS charged by the DNO, which typically makes up 10 to 15% of the power price. Secondly, it provides clean power. In a typical distribution network, power passes through various substations that are shared with other users, who create their own spikes and power surges. Thirdly, it s more reliable. Studies show that of all the faults occurring in the electricity supply, 97% are within the distribution network which NGD has eliminated. Internally, NGD distributes at 11kV to minimise losses. NGD s modular build-out is based on multiple stand-alone power trains providing power to discrete Data Hall environments. Each power train is fed by diverse 11kV/415V transformers, typically rated at 3.15MVA. 400 kv Super Grid 90 MVA WORLD CLASS DATA CENTRES NOWHERE SAFER SECONDARY FEED NGD Europe is also served by an 11 kv Western Power supply with up to 5 MW of capacity. This secondary feed would not be used for our typical data centre power infrastructure but crucially it gives NGD the potential to build a genuine Tier 4 environment should this be requested. 10 ENERGY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM At the heart of Next Generation Data s operations is their Energy Management System which integrates all aspects of the power and cooling infrastructure into a single system which automatically minimises energy consumption. This system is fully interactive and allows the operations team to drill down through all component parts of the system and monitor their status and performance. Next Generation Data s operational team have full visibility of their data centre. Not only can they see the real time status of the entire data centre through a single screen, but by collecting performance data in a single database, they can use the analysis and reporting tools provided by the EMS to understand and improve the data centre s performance in line with operational demand. 8

Many CFOs will look at the total capital cost of a data centre and depreciate it over 15 years to give an apparently attractive annual cost. It is assumed that leasing a similar size third party facility must be more expensive because of the third party s margin. However the third party vendor enjoys massive economies of scale, his operating costs are shared across multiple clients and the customer only pays for the space he needs when he needs it.
