For those not aware, the newly elected Board Members (and those transitioning to new roles, such as myself), began their terms after the annual General Membership Meeting at AMTC. Those whom you have entrusted in the governance of your organization have now begun their terms, have had assignments placed upon them and have begun to fulfill the duties you have elected them to perform. 3 Dear international IAFCCP member This year I was asked by the IAFCCP Board of Directors, to fill the newly inaugurated position of International Liaison. As one of the first international members of this organization and one of the founding members of the IAFCCP German Chapter, it was a great honor and a new challenge for me to accept this position. Based on the international survey done by the IAFCCP board earlier this year, I am working with the board together to support our international members and try to make this Association more international than it already is. After meeting with many personal contacts and colleagues from around the world at the recent AMTC in Virginia Beach, as well as through s, I heard the same question again and again: Why should we charter a chapter in our country? and, What can the IAFCCP do for us in our country? These are legitimate questions and are not easy to answer in general terms because each country has his own problems and demands, and even conceptions of what a professional association can and should do for colleagues in their own country. To achieve this for all members is nearly impossible for an Association board residing in the US. But the answer to this problem and the questions above are more easily answered than we think. As President, J. F. Kennedy said some decades ago, Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country! So, what do you think about the motto, Don t ask what the Association can do for you, ask what you can do for your profession and the Association will support you! My suggestion to all international members is to come together, build a chapter in your country, find and define your problems and goals. It s really easier to fight for objectives as a group, with a professional association to back you up. The IAFCCP Board of Directors and myself personally, will support you as an international chapter as much as we can. I promise! Juergen Gollwitzer, International Liaison Government & Legislative Affairs Committee Report Since the last FPNews, the US government has shut down and reopened, but work is yet to be done to prevent another standoff. In passing legislation to end the shutdown, increase the debt limit, and pass another continuing resolution to fund the government, Congress gave itself a December 15 deadline to craft a budget deal, with some hoping for a grand bargain to eliminate the opportunity for more government acrimony. We are monitoring this to gauge progress and we are hopeful that this bipartisan bicameral committee can meet its charge. On other fronts, work continues by both Houses of Congress to address the Sustained Growth Rate formula (the annual doc fix ), with proposals crafted by the Senate Finance Committee, the House Ways & Means Committee, and the House Energy & Commerce Committee. Other bills (the Field EMS Bill, etc.) remain in their assigned committees of jurisdiction, and we continue to watch these closely for progress. We will keep you, our members, posted on legislative developments, and we encourage you to share with AAMS the names of your Congressional members who may be interested in the Congressional Air Medical Caucus. 5 AMTC13 Highlights IAFCCP Board Meeting October 20, Virginia Beach, VA Instructor Anthony Baca assists lab attendees The IAFCCP presented a simulation and skills lab on Wednesday, October 23rd at 10:00am during the AMTC13. The skills stations consisted of difficult airway management, ventilator training, and surgical airways. The simulation portion was conducted using qualified instructors and dynamic human patient simulator (HPS) mannequins that mimic real patients and patient conditions. IAFCCP President, Richard Childress grabs a bite during the IAFCCP General Membership Meeting and Luncheon. IAFCCP AMTC Membership Reception We wish to thank all of our IAFCCP members, and their guests, who joined us for our AMTC Membership Reception on Monday evening of AMTC. For those who may have missed a great event, the IAFCCP membership was honored to have US Army Col. Andy Pennardt, MD, Medical Director for the BCCTPC Certified Tactical Paramedic (TP-C) Exam on hand to share not only how the US Army Special Forces has implemented the FP-C into mission readiness, but also an update on the progress of the TP-C certification. Of significance, those present heard first-hand how the US Army has improved battlefield survival by over 60% since the inception of the FP-C requirement for battlefield Army MedEvac providers! During the course of the lab, more than 50 participants had the opportunity to practice a variety of critical care skills utilized in high acuity patient transport and participate in three different staged scenarios in which they had to provide care for the HPS patients. This valuable learning experience was offered at no cost to attendees thanks to the generous support from our partners at Air Methods Corporation, CAE Incorporated, Gaumard Scientific, and PHI Air Medical.
