In this globalised economy, SMEs are significant drivers of growth, job creation, competition and innovation. There is an urgent need to integrate the SMEs to the global value chain which will help this sector to take them to the next level thereby enabling to create more employment opportunities resulting in the increased sectoral contribution to the National GDP. SMEs throughout the globe play an important role for the growth of every Nation and contribute immensely to the industrial development and output, exports, forex earnings and creation of employment opportunities. They constitute more than 90% of all enterprises in most of the countries and employ more than one third of the total working population in emerging economies. They are also the driving force behind large number of innovations, stimulate private ownership, entrepreneurial skills and help diversify economic activity. Globalization and subsequent opening up of various economies have created plenty of opportunities for the SMEs; however, at the same time it has given rise to a number of challenges. The challenging global markets and highly integrated economies have imposed the necessity of coping up with local and international competitors. 3 Global SME Business Summit 2014 Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in partnership with the Ministry of MSME, Government of India is organizing the Global SME Business Summit 2014 on 8 and 9 October 2014 at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi. The theme of the summit is Enabling Global Economic Growth through SME Partnerships. The objective of this summit is to connect Global SMEs for mutual business development and explore emerging markets. This summit will also work towards creating a strong platform for key decision makers, business leaders and multilateral, global funding agencies to address issues common to SMEs and identify cross-border partnership opportunities. This summit would create platform for various countries to showcase the business and technological strengths of their SME sector to the global counterparts. 6 The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) works to create and sustain an environment conducive to the development of India, partnering industry, Government, and civil society, through advisory and consultative processes.
