1 Rosetown Central High School A Caring School Community Striving To Promote Respect, Leadership, and Responsibility through Quality Education Phone: (306) rchs@sunwestsd.ca Mr. Jeff Sopczak Principal Mr. Gary Paproski Vice Principal December 2014 Newsletter #3 Administrators Message Winter has arrived! And with it came a quick reminder of some important to do s. First and foremost thank you to those who have responded to the letters and s from the office to update and supply a name and phone number for a billet for your child (bus students). We already had our first snow day where buses did not run. This did not mean we needed to use the billets but it did give us notice that we need to be prepared. For those who are not quite sure of the general guidelines surrounding classes and procedures at RCHS when we have stormy weather, the following might help: - If a bus does not run in the morning, it will not run in the afternoon o There may be times when one or more buses do not run, and there will be times when ALL buses do not run - School (classes) are always on and as normal as possible even if every bus is cancelled (sorry kids!) o The school being closed, and classes cancelled, is rare beyond belief I can think of one or two times in my 25+ years! o The normal, worst case scenario is when the weather is so bad that first period is interrupted due to so many being late, and as the day goes on, some teachers may have to alter what they had planned. The teacher usually ends up finding something constructive and useful for those who are here. When buses do not run, it is up to those bus parents as to whether their son/daughter comes to school that day. In the last number of years, a large % of bus kids have come to school when the bus does not run. Students from town are expected to be at school as normal. Now the above may help give you some insight as to what to expect and what has been happening, but we need to remember that everyone s situation and road is different. And you, as a parent, need to make the decision as to what is safe for your child in regards to travelling during bad weather. We do have our system to text home those who are ABS, but we also appreciate and understand those parents who call in and check when their son/daughter forgets to text or call to confirm they made it here on those blustery days. And on a totally different topic, if you have not yet bookmarked and checked out the RCHS website, please do so. We (meaning Mr. Moore) have

2 been busy updating it and putting information on it. What we need is your feedback as to what is working well, and what needs to change or be put on it. Our school is the best way to let us know. We appreciated the positive feedback on our ing out of the last report card. There was a flood of comments and s which confirmed we are on the right track! Over the next couple of weeks before Christmas and once we get back from the break and prepare for finals, I would like to encourage you to keep doing such a great job in communicating with us regarding absences and checking as to what works and what doesn t when it comes to missing school. And thank you to those who call or stop in to talk about it or any other issue. and texting are sometimes quicker and easier, but that live interaction cannot be replaced! With this being the last newsletter before the holidays, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Enjoy the holiday season. Mr. J. Sopczak Dates to Remember December 8 PD Day (No Classes) December 11 Christmas Band Concert (7:00 p.m.) December 22 - Jan 2 Christmas Vacation January 5 First day of school after Christmas January Final Exams (Grades 10 12) January 30 PD Day (No Classes) February 2 Start of 2 nd Semester February February Vacation SRC This November has been filled with the SRC completing the Magazine Campaign Incentives such as Pizza at the grade 12 tables, and slave for a day. We would like to thank you for your support of our Magazine Campaign, it is much appreciated. We just had a popcorn sale at the end of November that was a huge success and this is something that will be happening on the last school day of the month, every month! We as an SRC are preparing to help out at the Santa Breakfast coming up December 6 th, and our SRC is hard at work preparing for our Christmas Concert and the Christmas week events. 3 Drama Drama practices will start Monday, January 5, :30-5:00 Mondays and Wednesdays. Scripts are forthcoming and type casting will commence when they arrive. - Submitted by Mrs. Michelman In the event school buses are cancelled due to weather and your child will be late or absent, please call the school at (306) RCHS WE Day On November 7th 2014, we had the opportunity to attend WE Day in Saskatoon. WE Day brings young people together to celebrate the actions that they are taking locally and globally and to inspire another year of change. Mrs. Bergerman and Mrs. Wingert along with along with 27 students were part of the 15,000 students and educators that filled Credit Union Center! What an inspiring day! RCHS students participated in the WE Scare Hunger initiative and collected food for our local food bank and will be holding a We Bake, bake sale. Watch for posters for more information on this. We will also be selling Rafiki (Swahili for "friend") bracelets which are handmade with love by mammas in Kenya using glass beads in a variety of colors. Rafiki bracelets sell for $10 and by selling just 10 bracelets we will be able to buy a goat for a family in need overseas. Providing a goat for a family gives them nutritious milk and sustainable income for years to come. This also empowers women and men to support their children and take charge of their futures. What a gift! Stay tuned for dates and times! - Submitted by Mrs. Wingert, Mrs. Bergerman, RCHS WE Day Club Members

4 Take Our Kids to Work Day On Wednesday, November 5 th, many RCHS Grade 9 students participated in Take Our Kids to Work Day. This national program allows students to complete career and work exploration by spending a day with parents, colleagues, relatives, friends or community hosts. Students from the 9-1 class had these comments about their great TOKW Day: The best part of the job would be getting to talk to clients and help them out. I learned how to do paperwork, work on vehicles and how to negotiate. I think the best part of being a farmer is that you can be your own boss and have your own hours. The best part is the lunch time. I got to see my dad at work, and we had lots of fun! Thank you to the many parents, community businesses and hosts for providing our students a chance to experience the working world in a safe and positive environment! - Submitted by Mrs. Frick Davis Remembrance Day Congratulations to the winners of the Royal Canadian Legion s annual Remembrance Day contest. A text message will go out to parents at 10:00 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. if your child is absent and no phone call has been received. Students will be called to the office for telephone messages, lunches, and administration purposes. Students are reminded to watch the television monitors for information on extra-curricular activities and upcoming events that pertain to them.
