3 Re: 9TH ANNUAL STATEWIDE LEGAL FOOD FRENZY February 15, 2015 PLEASE FORWARD THIS TO YOUR PROGRAM COORDINATOR Dear Managing Partner or Office Head: The 9th Annual Statewide Legal Food Frenzy is right around the corner! Over the past eight years, the legal community has helped develop the Legal Food Frenzy into one of the food banks most successful and beneficial statewide campaigns, providing over 11.4 million pounds of food to hungry children, elderly, and the working poor across the Commonwealth. This year s event, once again sponsored by the Virginia Bar Association Young Lawyers Division and the Office of the Attorney General, and benefiting the seven regional food banks and the Federation of Virginia Food Banks, will take place March 30 April 10, Hunger in America 2014, the latest state-by-state report from Feeding America, reports that almost 1.2 million Virginians are served annually by the seven local food banks and their partner agencies. Thirty percent of Virginia s food bank clientele are children under age 18, while 15% are seniors age 60 or older. Sixty-nine percent of client households that are provided emergency food assistance have incomes that fall at or below the federal poverty level. Demand remains at historically high levels while supplies at the food banks have dwindled. Private donations have decreased in recent years and federal programs have fewer commodities surpluses to send. Food manufacturers, meanwhile, deliver fewer and fewer donations due to increased efficiencies in their production and distribution systems. In addition, the food banks continue to experience price increases in much of the food they must purchase. That is why the Legal Food Frenzy campaign is so important. It provides lawyers and their staff an opportunity to make a huge impact in our communities by supporting the food banks food assistance programs like the Kids Cafe, Head Start and Back Pack programs, senior centers and elderly feeding programs, and individual household distribution. We can be assured that the food and funds raised through the Legal Food Frenzy go a long way, as Virginia s food banks are some of the most cost-efficient organizations in the country. Of course, as always, we are also competing for the prestigious and highly coveted Attorney General s Cup. Please let us know by Friday, March 27, 2015, if you will be participating in the 9th Annual Statewide Legal Food Frenzy by contacting Maria Booker, Partnership Manager; Northern Virginia of Capital Area Food Bank by at mbooker@capitalareafoodbank.org or by telephone at (202) A kick-off event is currently being scheduled. Please contact Maria for details and to sign up your office to volunteer at the Food Bank. We are challenging YOU to join your colleagues in this humanitarian effort and make the 9th Annual Statewide Legal Food Frenzy the most successful event yet! Sincerely, Sincerely, Sincerely, Sincerely, Sincerely, Christopher M. Gill Derek H. Swanson William D. Prince, IV Lauren M. Wheeling Stacey C. 4 February 5, 2015 To the Legal Community of Northern Virginia: As we prepare for the 9 th annual Legal Food Frenzy, I wanted to take a second to tell you how important this campaign is to our hunger efforts in Northern Virginia; how much of a difference it makes to the communities we serve; and how hopeful I am that you will participate in some capacity this year. As a retired member of the New York State Bar, I recall my days as a practicing attorney in New York City, with fondness. When I think about my days with the Capital Area Food Bank, I can definitely say that this is the best job I ve ever had. These two career choices are not as far apart as one would think. The lawyers I know, care deeply about equal justice, and give their time, through pro bono work, and money to support many great causes. For the past nine years, hunger has been the cause I ve supported because food insecurity is a reality for 12.3% of all Northern Virginians. This includes 55,000 children who struggle with hunger on a daily basis. It is my hope that during this 9 th frenzy, the legal community will rally and do more than ever. We have set an ambitious goal to raise $75,000. I am sure that many of you donate pro bono time to great causes. Why not make the Legal Food frenzy part of those causes? It s a great way to spend one or two billable hours! Thank you all in advance. Sincerely, Director, Northern Virginia Region

5 9th Annual Statewide Legal Food Frenzy Ideas for Your Food Frenzy Dress Down Day- if you bring in a certain number of food items you may wear casual attire. Potluck Day- everyone brings a dish for lunch and in order to gain entrance you must bring a certain number of food items or pay an admission fee. Costume Theme Day- create a theme, for example, Mardi Gras or St. Patrick s Day Parade. If you bring in a certain number of food items or cash amount you may dress for that theme. Food Theme Day- challenge co-workers to bring in as many different food items as possible in a certain category. For example, food geared towards people with diabetes, or food for children in a particular age group. Whoever has the most different types of food within the category wins a prize. Lunch for the Hungry Day- everyone contributes what they would normally spend on lunch. Prize- have a prize for all employees who participate if your company wins their category or overall event. Totals- display daily totals in high-traffic areas or announce totals using s to keep people up to date and involved. Friendly Competition- conduct non-monetary waging and/or wars between law firms and/or firm sections. Rewards- have rewards for staff members who donate more than 20 cans or $100.

6 9th Annual Statewide Legal Food Frenzy Information Form Please to Maria Booker at the Capital Area Food Bank by April 10, 2015 Firm Name: Firm Physical Address/suite#/floor: Firm Contact: Contact Phone Number: Number of Employees: Please check here if your firm will be delivering food and monetary contributions to the foodbank to receive the extra 25% bonus Please check here if your firm has only a monetary contribution to be picked up and does not have any food donation Amount of $ collected: The following questions pertain to firms that have collected food. Approximate # of pounds, boxes, bags, etc., collected: Yes No May pallet jacks/hand trucks be used to transport food in your firm s building? Yes No May a service elevator be used in your firm s building? Yes No If your firm resides in a multi-level building, can food be stored on the first floor? If no, what floor will the food be stored? Please assure that your receptionist can direct Capital Area Food Bank staff to where the donated food is. Thank You and Good Luck!

7 9th Annual Statewide Legal Food Frenzy RULES The following explains the rules for counting non-perishable food and case contributions to the Legal Food Frenzy for the CAPITAL AREA FOOD BANK The contest runs from March 30 to April 10, You may not count any money or food collected after April 10th. Each dollar contributed will count as four pounds of food. Checks should be made payable to Capital Area Food Bank Contributions of money are tax-deductible and are very welcome. Please note, if you are contributing cash, please include a receipt with the contributors name, address and amount of donation. In an effort to decrease manual tabulation; add a competitive edge; and enhance our ability to track the campaign, the food bank has created an on-line donation platform. You may donate online at Once here click join now. NOTE: To participate as a team, have your firm lead create a team fundraising page and goal and make your donation on this team page to identify your gift as part of your law firm s Legal Food Frenzy contribution. Food items will be weighed and the results tabulated in pounds. Candy will not be counted. When counting the number of employees, count each person working at the firm, regardless of position. Please do not contribute food items in glass containers they have a high risk of breakage. Please do not open items that are already packed in cases, cartons, or boxes. This will make it easier for the Capital Area Food Bank to pick up. It is very important that you tell Capital Area Food Bank the approximate amount of food you have collected in order for the transportation department to prepare properly. If your firm only has a monetary contribution, this needs to be communicated at the time your pick-up date is assigned so that Capital Area Food Bank is aware of what form of vehicle to send to your firm. All food and fund donations must be turned into Capital Area Food Bank no later than April 24, 2015 in order to be counted towards the competition. If a firm delivers all food and monetary contributions to the Capital Area Food Bank; 6833 Hill Park Dr. Lorton, VA 22079, you firm will receive a 25% bonus of tabulated pounds! Capital Campaign gifts will not be counted towards this two week competition. Law firms with multiple office locations will compete as a single entity for Attorney General awards. Please fill out the Information Form and or FAX back to Maria Booker by April 10, 2015 at mbooker@capitalareafoodbank.org or (703) THANK YOU AND GOOD LUCK!
