Computer Requirements WebEx is very flexible and works on many devices. For the best online experience, please make sure your computer meets the requirements below. Connect a webcam and headset ODU recommends using a separate webcam and a headset with a microphone for online web conferencing classes. A headset can help you concentrate on class, especially if you have roommates or are connecting from a place with background noise. A headset is required if you attend class from a computer lab at one of ODUOnline s partners such as a community college or higher education center. If you have a new webcam or headset, connect and install them on your computer before you connect to WebEx. Install any support software that was included with your hardware. Page 3
Connect to WebEx for the first time 1. First, make sure your webcam, speakers and microphone (or headset with mic) are connected and installed on your computer. 2. Then, open a browser and go to online.odu.edu and click Student Access in the upper right corner. 3. Click Class access from the drop-down menu. 4. Click on Web Conference Class Test. This will open a new window/tab. 5. On the right side, click the button below Live Web Conference (New). Page 4
Connect to WebEx for the first time: browser plugin If this is the first time you ve used WebEx, you will be asked to load a plugin for your web browser. Depending on your computer and browser, you will see a variation of these steps: Choose the option you want for the plug-in. Or this... These are your choices for the add-on used within WebEx. If you have Java already, use the first option. Use the second option to install the WebEx meeting app once, and have quick access to your class each time. Use the third option to run a temporary app to access class this time only. Then choose Run to access class. After making a selection to run WebEx, a new window will open. Page 5
Connect to WebEx for the first time: time zone You also will be asked to set your time zone when you connect for the first time. Click Yes, then choose your time zone and click OK. The WebEx interface will now load. Page 6
Connect to WebEx for the first time: WebEx interface This is the WebEx interface. Your window may look slightly different depending on what kind of browser or computer you are using. Instructor s video Instructor s presentation window Next, we ll connect your audio. If you don t see this prompt, go to the Quick Start tab at the top left and click More under the Call Using Computer button. Click Test computer audio. Page 7
Connect to WebEx for the first time: audio test 1. Click Test. You should hear musical notes play from your speakers or headset. Adjust the volume as needed. Helpful Links: Using WebEx Audio Understanding Audio Conference Modes 2. Next, choose which microphone you want to use. 3. Talk into your mic. You should see the volume buttons light up here. Adjust the volume as needed. 4. Click OK when you re done. Don t forget, you can always contact ODU for help if you have any trouble with these steps. 5. Click Call Using Computer. Or, you can choose to have WebEx call your phone. Click Call Me and enter your phone number for this alternative. In this test, you will hear music playing after your audio is connected. You can change these settings at any time from the Quick Start tab. Page 8
Connect to WebEx for the first time: video IMPORTANT!! When you log in to class, click the microphone icon to mute your mic! Red = Muted Please keep your mic muted unless you need to speak to the class. Next, activate your webcam by clicking on the camera icon below the presenter s video. Page 9
Connect to WebEx for the first time: video Your webcam video will appear here. The instructor and other students can now see you.
