My interest in relationships brings together two areas in the field of communication: organizational and interpersonal. Specifically, my work considers how to best prepare individuals for successfully entering workplaces where they are likely to confront career opportunities, yet also tight economies and instability. Students developed interpersonal communication, critical thinking, and information literacy skills by exploring what it means to be engaged, twenty-first century citizens. Students practiced composing, critiquing, and revising ideas based on personal experience, observation, and fieldwork in the community, culminating in several discrete projects using oral, written, and visual modalities. Composition and Communication II (University of Kentucky) Lower level undergraduate course, the second of a two course sequence, designed to engage students in composing and communicating ideas using speech, writing, and visuals. Students worked in small groups/teams to explore issues of public concern using rhetorical analysis, compose well-developed arguments and propose viable solutions. Students conducted research and learned to use visual and digital resources both to enhance written and oral presentations and communicate with public audiences. Strategic Business and Professional Communication (University of Kentucky) Upper level undergraduate course focused on preparing students for their careers by developing effective and strategic professional communication skills (integrated written, oral and visual) in interpersonal, employment interview and online environments, small groups/teams and when delivering business presentations. Communication in Interviewing (Southern Illinois University Edwardsville) Upper level undergraduate course focused on teaching students how to develop a resume, form questions, listen, gather information, and effectively present themselves during an interview, and about the job search process in general. Demonstrated ability to counsel and teach students professional communication skills needed for a successful job search. Career Management and Work-Life Integration (Southern Illinois University Edwardsville) Developed curriculum for new graduate level course on career development Graduate course focused on introducing theory and research about career development and management within changing workplaces. Students administered several self-assessments and developed critical competences/skills to successfully manage their career development and work-life integration. Introduction to Organizational Communication (Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey) Lower level undergraduate course focused on teaching skills necessary to function effectively in organizations and appropriate workplace behavior. Topics included: motivation, goal setting, feedback, delegation, resolving conflict, leadership, employee performance and teamwork.

Cattafesta, Ph.D. 3 Small Group Communication (Southern Illinois University Edwardsville) Lower level undergraduate course focused on teaching students how to apply their knowledge of group communication concepts to a service-learning project. Students worked with a nonprofit organization and developed problem-solving skills by implementing a solution for an organizational challenge (i.e. lack of money, resources, etc.) Organizational Communication (Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey) Upper level undergraduate course that focused on teaching students how to diagnose communication problems in organizations and implement solutions. Students are expected to apply relevant theories to a range of case studies. Interpersonal Communication Skills (Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey) Lower level undergraduate course focused on developing interactional skills in a variety of contexts (family, friendships, romantic and the workplace). Gender and Communication (Southern Illinois University Edwardsville) Upper level undergraduate course focused on how gender roles functioned, how they are created and perpetuated through communication in various social contexts. Survey of Organizational Communication Research (Southern Illinois University Edwardsville) Graduate level course focused on introducing theory and research to develop students understanding of the role communication plays in organizations. Topics included: identity, emotion, gender, control, power, performance, management, leadership, ethics, and teams. Seminar in Organizational Culture (Southern Illinois University Edwardsville) Graduate level course focused on introducing theory and research about the creation, maintenance and transformation of organizational cultures. Students collected and analyzed their own data to describe an organization s culture. Communication and Community (Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey) New service learning course designed with a Civic & Service Education (CASE) Curriculum Grant Upper level undergraduate course that focused on theories of community and how discourse creates or inhibits community within organizations. Students participated in real case studies of organizations. Public Speaking (Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey) Upper level undergraduate course that focused on the principles of public speaking and practice in the composition and delivery, and criticism of several types of speeches.
