1 The University of Texas at San Antonio College of Education and Human Development Doctor of Philosophy in Counselor Education and Supervision PURPOSE OF PROGRAM The Doctor of Philosophy degree in Counselor Education and Supervision offers you advanced study and professional development in the field of counseling and counselor education. The doctoral program prepares professionals for future careers in research, academic and clinical settings. In this program, you will acquire both the theoretical knowledge and the practical skills needed to work in counselor education programs and to supervise the next generation of counselor educators as they practice their own skills. You will also formulate your own philosophy and approach to the counseling education field. Multicultural competencies in applied clinical settings are emphasized throughout the program. PROGRAM OPTIONS General Core Courses (40 semester credit hours): BBL 6223 Anthropology and Education in Multi-Cultural Contexts COU 6003 Consultation and Program Evaluation COU 6323 Advanced Psychological Assessment COU 7121 College and University Teaching Seminar COU 7133 Seminar in Professional Development COU 7213 Advanced Theories of Counseling COU 7283 Advanced Multi-Cultural Counseling COU 7313 Practicum in Counseling (must be taken twice for a total of 6 hours) COU 7413 Internship I COU 7513 Internship II COU 7583 Supervision of Counseling COU 7593 Practicum in Counseling Supervision COU 7893 Research in Counseling Research Courses (Nine semester credit hours): COU 6893 Foundations of Research in Counseling and Development EDU 7043 Educational Research Statistics: Descriptive and Comparative EDU 7103 Qualitative Research Traditions Approved Emphasis Curriculum Area Courses (Nine semester credit hours) Dissertation (Nine semester credit hours) The counseling program at UTSA trained me very well to work in a variety of settings! 2 College of Education and Human Development The University of Texas at San Antonio Admission Requirements A master s degree in counseling or in a related mental health field requiring a minimum of 48 semester credit hours equivalent to the master s degree requirements of the UTSA Counseling program and/or Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) A minimum GPA of 3.0 in master s level courses in counseling or in a related mental health field. A portfolio consisting of: - A 48-hour master s degree transcript - For applicants whose native language is not English, a score of at least 550 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - Three letters of recommendation attesting to academic and personal attributes for success in the program and the potential for contributing to the field of study - A written personal statement/essay describing research interests and purpose for pursuing the Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision - Graduate Record Examination (GRE) test scores no more than five years old - Documented experience in a work environment where counseling was the primary professional emphasis - A professional resume listing prior experiences in the field of Counseling. 3 The University of Texas at San Antonio College of Education and Human Development Master of Arts in Counseling PURPOSE OF PROGRAM This program prepares multi-culturally competent, professional counselors and counselor educators to demonstrate the necessary knowledge, skills, identity and scholarship for a successful counseling career. Creativity, diversity, and developmental and relational processes are emphasized through relationships with the community, other university programs and students. You will also learn the ethics of the profession and apply your knowledge within multicultural populations. PROGRAM OPTIONS This 48-semester hour program offers advanced study and professional development in the fields of community, school, addictions, multicultural, marriage and family, and sports psychology counseling. Classes are held at the downtown campus. Students may earn credit toward a state-level counseling license to practice in community settings (Licensed Professional Counselor LPC). Credit may also be earned toward a school counselor endorsement on a teacher s certificate. Two years of teaching experience is required at the time the state exam is taken. A thesis option emphasizes the development of research competencies critical to continued graduate-level study.
