Coaching Staff St. Johns River State College Athletic Director - Ross Jones Ross Jones joined the St. Johns River State College coaching staff as head baseball coach in 2008 and assumed the position of athletic director in 2009. Jones first season at the helm saw the Viking baseball team finish the 2009 season with a 33-17 record. The 33 wins surpassed the previous school record of 30 wins in a season set in 1982. Jones is a 1984 graduate of Palatka High School. Upon graduating from high school, Jones was selected by the Texas Rangers in the 1984 Major League Baseball amateur draft. He spent seven seasons pitching for the Rangers and Montreal Expos minor league systems. After retiring from professional baseball, Jones earned his A.A. degree from SJR State in 1991 and his bachelor s degree in education from the University of North Florida in 1993. Jones is an avid outdoors man and enjoys hunting and fishing in his spare time. Ross and his wife, Tish, have two sons, Tyler and Hunter, and two daughters, Taylor and Tessa. Head Coach - Katie Brosky 4 Katie Brosky is entering her second year as head softball coach for the Vikings. Coach Brosky was born and raised in Palatka. She graduated from Palatka High School in 2003 and set the state strikeout record, with 471 strikeouts in a season, the same year. Brosky played at Seminole State College and won Female Athlete of the Year in 2005. She transferred to the University of North Florida and pitched for the Ospreys in the team s first season as a Division I program. After graduating with honors from UNF, Coach Brosky attended Florida State University s College of Law. While there, she played on the club softball team, was a member of the Entertainment, Arts & Sports Law Society, and worked in the athletic department. Coach Brosky graduated from law school in 2010 before coming to the St. Johns River State College softball program. Her sister, Kaley, plays softball at the University of North Florida. Both of her parents played sports for SJR State, and her mom was also the student government president. Coach Brosky has a dog named Rosin.
Coaching Staff St. Johns River State College Assistant Coach - Rachael wilkinson This is Rachael Wilkinson s second year as the assistant softball coach for SJR State. Wilkinson graduated from Dunnellon High School in 2007, where she played softball under defending state champion coach Kevin Fagan. She was a starting left-fielder for two years at SJR State and spent one year as a graduate coaching assistant. While playing for SJR State, Wilkinson earned All Mid-Florida Conference honorable mention recognition and had an accumulated batting average over.400 for both years. Wilkinson spent the summer coaching a traveling softball team to fourth place at state. She attended coaching clinics and university games following the teachings of Mike Candrea, eight time national champion and USA head softball coach, to hone her coaching skills. Wilkinson s love and passion for softball has prompted her to take up the mantra of coaching. It has been her life-long passion to continue in the sport she loves. assistant Coach - jill semento The 2011-2012 season marks Jill Semento s first year as the assistant softball coach for SJR State. A graduate of Umatilla High School, Coach Jill continued her play at the University of South Carolina for her freshman and sophomore years. She earned spots on the SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll and the 2009 NFCA All-Region First Team. After transferring to Stetson University for her junior and senior seasons, Semento earned spots on the A-Sun All-Tournament Team, A-Sun All- Academic Team, 2011 Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-District III First Team, and All-Atlantic Sun First Team. Semento s teachings come from an array of different coaches and players, but the biggest influence on her coaching philosophy has been from her long-time coach (and father), Don Semento. Coach Jill is extremely thankful for the support of her mother, sister, brother, grandparents and friends. If there is one thing Semento hopes she can pass on to her players, it would be her passion for the game. She is very excited to be a part of the Vikings softball program and can t wait to see how the season pans out! 5

Preview St. Johns River State College COACHING STAFF Katie Brosky is entering her 2nd season as the head coach for the Viking softball program. After a 20-40 2010-2011 season, Brosky looks for her team to improve upon the number of wins they have this year. Brosky has brought aboard assistant coach Jill Semento for the 2011-2012 season and has also retained the help of assistant coaches from the 2010-2011 season, Rachael Wilkinson and Laura (Hammer) Hanstein. PITCHERS There are four different pitchers that will be seeing time in the circle for the Vikings this season. Sophomore Amanda Smith looks to be the ace after a strong fall season. She provides great leadership and a strong presence on the mound. Lauren Chambers, another sophomore, will see time on the mound as a starter this season. Chambers also delivers a strong presence and will be effective in getting batters to put the ball on the ground, but also has strikeout potential. Sophomore Laurrin Howard will also return to the circle for the Vikings after being tied with Amanda Smith for the most wins last year. Taryn Copeland is the lone freshman hurler for the 2011-2012 season. Taryn has shown a lot of improvement since the beginning of the fall season, and we anticipate a lot of great things from her, Brosky said. CATCHER The starting job behind the plate will be split up amongst three players this season. Second team All-State selection Ana Lopez will be back behind the plate this year. Lopez provides the Vikings with a strong offensive presence and leadership on the field. Last year Lopez batted an impressive.421, with 12 home runs and 50 RBIs, to put her as number eight in the state offensively. Freshman catchers Kaylynn Sloat and Lydia Hough will also be seeing time behind the plate this season. Kaylynn has an extremely strong arm and great blocking skills. Her athleticism is unlike anyone else s in the Mid Florida Conference. Hough, a local standout player with a lot of knowledge of the game and familiarity with Coach Brosky s pitch calling, will also see time as a catcher for the Viking program. 7
Preview St. Johns River State College INFIELD Sophomores Lauren Chambers and Laurrin Howard bring experience as well as strong offensive power to the program and will look to split time at first base when not in the pitching circle. They both have good gloves and can handle the position well Brosky states. Sophomore Kristie Hanewinckel, a transfer from Gulf Coast CC, will be seeing a majority of her time at the shortstop position. Hanewinckel s good hands, mobility, and consistency are what will make her stand out in the middle infield. She also provides the offensive line up with a solid bat. Freshman Heather Muccino s offensive power has seemed to find her a spot at second base. Coach Brosky said, Muccino is such an offensive weapon that we had to find a spot for her on the field. She played shortstop in high school, but we feel that she is more fit as a second baseman on our squad. Sophomore Amie Biehl, a transfer from conference rival College of Central Florida, will also be seeing time in the middle infield. Biehl provides the team with great speed and agility which allows her to move laterally with ease. She gives the defense an opportunity to make big plays. Freshman Chandler Singletary could also be seeing time as a second baseman. Chandler could be splitting time between the outfield and second base, Brosky stated. Mentioned earlier as a catcher, freshman Kaylynn Sloat will see most of her time at third base. Her strong arm, along with her athletic ability, will make her a force to mess with at the hot corner. This kid is not afraid of anyone or anything, Semento said. Sloat will provide the team with speed and power, which will be seen both offensively and defensively. Sophomore Becca Roncone, a transfer from St. Leo University, will also be seeing some time at third base. OUTFIELD The anchor of the outfield will be sophomore Heather Sutliff. She is looking to improve upon her freshman campaign where she was second on the team in doubles, triples, home runs and runs scored. Sutliff is a great kid who, lucky for us, is a great softball player. She has a great arm and hits the ball very well, Brosky stated. The outfield position could be played by a number of Vikings this year. Sophomore Stephanie Hinerman provides the team with great speed and base running knowledge along with a strong arm in the outfield. Freshman Katelynn Stoll has a great glove and communicates exceptionally well in the outfield. Freshman Chandler Singletary will move between the infield and outfield this season. Sophomore Heather Udry is making the transition from infield to outfield for the Vikings. A lefty slapper, she gives the team speed in the outfield and a strong arm to back it up. Freshman Angie Gaffney is another lefty slapper who has great speed and will compete for a starting position in the outfield. Angie s speed could be a game changing factor, Coach Rachael Wilkinson stated. Sophomore Brittney Alford is another player who could see time in the outfield as she also transfers from the infield to the outfield this year. Alford has a strong arm that can gun runners out at the plate if they take the chance. 8
