A Unique Focus on Innovation Imperial College Business School is renowned for its expertise in innovation and entrepreneurship. In the Imperial MBA, we have developed strong partnerships and frameworks to ensure that you will be immersed in the latest design and innovation thinking, and a thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem. You will explore the key challenges of introducing products and services to market. The process is relevant whether you are examining innovation within an organisation or planning to start your own business. Operating as part of a self-selected, multi-disciplinary team, you will explore the latest developments in science, technology, design and business. Collaborating with key researchers and practitioners in the field, you will investigate the commercial potential for your own idea, or one being developed by one of our project partners, including Imperial Innovations and the Royal College of Art. By the end of the IE&D course, you will have explored the process of preparing a start-up and will be able to exploit the power of design and innovation to transform ideas into a new product or service. For example, it could be the reorganisation of a service in a National Health Service setting to address the current financial environment, a market analysis of a new product, or a strategic review of an area of activity. Clients brief their group, provide relevant access and attend to hear the group s recommendations. Recent consulting project CLIENTS include: Amnesty International BT Bupa Ernst & Young Jaguar Land Rover Microsoft Research Pfizer Royal Bank of Scotland Shell IMPERIAL INNOVATION CHALLENGE How can businesses eradicate poverty or address scarcity of natural resources? This project integrates the Business School with other Imperial faculties such as Natural Sciences, Engineering and Medicine to take on global grand challenges in health, energy, environments and data security. Our goal is to apply business thinking to social challenges. You will work in self-selected teams to identify business opportunities within these grand challenges. 18 mba@imperial.ac.uk

The Business School s bold commitment to innovation, entrepreneurship and design is hugely relevant to today s business and management needs. The MBA experience has given me the opportunity to network and exchange ideas with a diverse group of future leaders, from across the globe. Husni Salieh Full-Time MBA 2013 imperial.ac.uk/business-school/mba 19

Through integrated courses focusing on your personal development, we will help you to identify your future goals and achieve them. We will provide you with practical development tools and the opportunity to reflect upon your experiences and devise a plan for your future. Personal Leadership Journey The Personal Leadership Journey will help you to identify your individual strengths and areas for development in terms of both your leadership skills and wider professional effectiveness. This in turn will enable you to produce a Personal Development Plan to meet your specific needs. Using this plan, you will be able to engage in a range of professional development activities including workshops and practical exercises designed to help prepare you for the managerial and leadership challenges you ll face in your post-mba career. The course aims to further help you formulate your career strategy, addressing both short-term and long term objectives. Our Careers team will work with you closely throughout your MBA to identify not only sectors and functions relevant to your future career path, but also to equip you with the skills and knowledge required to effectively market yourself for a wide range of opportunities. The course emphasises three main and interconnected elements: Careers Strategy will provide a clear foundation on which to formulate your individual career path, whether you re looking to change career, accelerate your current trajectory or pursue entrepreneurial interests. Professional Development offers a wide range of workshops in the spring and summer terms. With support from your careers consultant, these workshops will help you address the development needs identified in your Personal Development Plan. Typical workshops include Persuasion and Influencing, Media Training and Personal Impact. ETHICS AND VALUES Consideration of personal ethics and corporate values is central to the Imperial approach. During your MBA, using a combination of class-based and experiential learning, you will examine how personal ethics have implications for decision making, motivation and leadership. In addition, you will also consider how corporate values affect an organisation s culture and its approach to accountability and corporate social responsibility. STRATEGIC PROBLEM SOLVING This course will provide you with the key techniques you need to complete your MBA successfully, including problem framing and case study analysis. It will equip you with a number of practical and analytical toolkits commonly used by top consultancy firms. Self Awareness comprises an intensive threeday development centre with individual and group exercises specifically designed to identify your own individual strengths and areas for development, in terms of your leadership capability and wider professional effectiveness. You will be observed by trained executive coaches who will facilitate reflection and feedback. This feedback will form the basis of your Personal Development Plan, a bespoke action plan you will create to address your own specific development needs. 20 mba@imperial.ac.uk

Global Exposure Week Spending a week outside the UK, you will gain cultural immersion and appreciation of business practices of another country in the context of its operation within the global economy. This is an integral part of the Full-Time MBA programme, with costs included in your tuition fees. You will embark on an intensive exploration of a country s business practices and challenges using company visits as the ideal setting for practical case studies. You will experience a combination of site visits and talks by top executives, within the context of the core management disciplines you are studying. Perspectives on Practice Perspectives on Practice is an individual, self-directed project providing you with an opportunity to reflect on your MBA learning as you near the end of the programme. It will allow you to develop your ideas on a topic of interest, most likely relevant to your own practice, by considering the implications of current thinking by academics and practitioners within an applied context. For example, with a background in change management, you might assess why attempts at managing change are as likely to fail as succeed. Is there a gap between theory and practice? What is the latest thinking from academics and practitioners and how can the typically weak record on change management initiatives be addressed? Alternatively, you might be working for an investment bank in corporate finance focusing on mergers; you might assess and explore any merger premium differentials across different sectors or for similar sectors across different countries. Whatever your area of interest, the essence of this project is to consider how you can use both academic and practitioner perspectives to inform current practice. Capstone The opportunity to celebrate achievements and a final opportunity to integrate your MBA experiences. With a mix of case studies, poster sessions and a conference, the Capstone consolidates the MBA experience in a formal setting. STUDENT CLUBS AND LEISURE The Imperial MBA enables you to form networks and friendships that last a lifetime. The programme s social club regularly arranges events that families and partners are welcome to join, such as sporting occasions, social gatherings and trips. These, along with the annual MBA ball, will add to your exciting and diverse MBA experience. You will have the opportunity to take part in student clubs and sports. You will also receive free membership of Ethos, our state-of-the-art sports centre, which is ideally located just across the road from the Business School. More information on student clubs can be found at imperialcollegeunion.org For information on Business School Careers Clubs, visit imperial.ac.uk/business-school/currentstudents/ careers/clubs imperial.ac.uk/business-school/mba 21
