Possible Ideas for a Language Celebration/Launch Week 1. Science/Literacy - Children from each year group to work in small groups to prepare simple traditional cuisine. Children to prepare labels (in target language), recipes, instructions etc. Children to use prior knowledge to see if the meals would provide a balanced diet. 2. DT/Science Children design ways of making the Eiffel Tower. Which material is the strongest? Which frame is most stable? How will we join the frame? What weight can the frame hold? How will people travel to the top? Some children could make an English comparable model e.g. Big Ben. Once complete children could do a small presentation on what they found out about their landmark. Internet and books could be used for the children s independent research. Rather than just making Eiffel towers each class could take a different landmark and make a model and description notes to be displayed for others to see at the end of the week. 3. Geography - Look at maps of France/Paris/Spain/Madrid discuss the famous sites use map to write directions to travel from various places of interest or write tourist guides about the various sites. Compare to the famous tourist sites in Great Britain. You could incorporate the route the Tour De France takes. Then children could make posters to promote this cycling event. 4. History/Art - Family tree Children could do a family tree portrait picture and then label in the target language. 5. Literacy/ICT - Using the internet look at schools in France/Spain. How do they differ from schools in England? Children could make a school prospectus in a group for a French/Spanish/English school. 6. Numeracy Children could design Numeracy based games for each other using colours, numbers, shapes, landmarks and capital cities etc in the target language. 7. Music Each class choose a song to learn in the target language over the week. During an assembly or a drop in time from parents at the end of the week, children could perform their class song. Children could select instruments to accompany their song and learn their names in the target language. 8. PE Host a Mini Sports Afternoon this could be done with games children play in France/Spain. Children throughout school could each have different roles in organizing and participating in the event. Children could develop a programme of events/games, arrange teams and work out a point system. 9. PE Host a Mini Football Afternoon like a mini-world cup. Look at towns and cities around Spain/France that have Football Clubs with the children. This could be done on two afternoons splitting KS1 and KS2 children. Place the children into French/Spanish Teams and hold a mini 5/6/7 a-side tournament. 10. Break Times - Petanque could be played. Other games that could be adapted e.g. hopscotch with months/days - Large Snakes and Ladders saying numbers in target language etc 11. Make French flip flaps (colours) independent activity 12. Assembly Time ask the French Ambassador to come and do initial assembly to introduce French Week. If this is not possible perhaps a special visitor like a secondary school colleague to come and talk to the children about Languages. 13. If appropriate, Y11/10 children from a local high school could come to visit for the day. 14. Dance using Henri Des CD. Children could work during their PE lesson on developing a Dance. 15. Literacy/Art/Geography/History/ICT - Make a storyboard of Life in France/Spain. Supply the children with non-fiction books and the about selected country. Children do own research to make a storyboard. Encourage the children to find out about family routines/traditions- meal times, siesta, religion, etc. How do these differ from ours? These could then be displayed around school for children from other year groups to read. Also, look at Life in France available on Wigan Schools Online web site. This shows pictures of French villages, schools, shops, famous buildings etc. 16. Literacy An infant class could use a French/Spanish baby name book and make badges for all the other children in school with a new traditional French/Spanish name which they will use for the remaining time of the celebration week. 17. Each day all the children in school register and follow simple classroom instructions spoken in target language e.g. Line up please, cross your arms please etc. Parents could be greeted in the morning in target language and children greet each other in target language. 18. Children could collaboratively make its own large classroom calendar and lesson timetable plan which is displayed in target language. 19. Children could collaboratively make a whole school weather and season chart done using target language. This could be displayed in the schools entrance hall and various children could be given the responsibility to change it daily. 20. Invite a native speaker in school to visit a KS1 class and do a story time in target language. Contact a local college/university there may be someone eager for the experience! 21. Movie Time Watch short excerpts from familiar DVD in target language. Using normal children s Disney DVD they sometime give you language options. Select target language. 22. Art one class or all classes could research French Artist and do some work based around this artists style. These could be displayed at the end of the week for all children to share. (Claude Monet, Paul Cezanne, Henri Matisse, Pierre-Auguste Renoir) 23. All children could be involved in making flags to decorate the school indoors and outdoors. 24. ICT - Contact a school in France/Spain through ambassador. Ask if the would be happy for the children to email them and reply. If possible, video conferencing could be used. 25. Geography/Literacy - Look at holiday destinations around France and Spain using images from the internet. Compare the types of holidays available in France/Spain to the holidays available in England. Children could make postcard to send home in the post. 26. DT/ICT/Art/Literacy Make a Model Village. Look at images on the internet of a traditional village in France/Spain. This may be a typical square with traditional shops. Talk about the shops we have and their names. Teach the children the names of similar shops in target language. Split the class into small groups and set the task of making a model village. Encourage the children to negotiate which group will be responsible for making each part. Children could use computer/laptops for making shop signs etc. 27. ICT - Older children could participate in a web quest about famous French/spanish people try - www.bstms.fayette.k12.ky.us/faculty/christ/famous_french_people_we bquest.htm. Children could also develop their own web quest. 28. DT - older children could make some board games for younger children to play. To be presented in target language. 29. Drama/Literacy - One or all classes could take a simple French/Spanish story book and perform the story to the rest of school or another class. Children to make own props and costumes etc. 30. ICT - Look at the French Celebrity/Sport Stars Notebook/Power point presentation with the children. Compare to the celebrities and sports stars they know. 31. Literacy - Children could make their own non-fiction book on festival in France/Spain. For example Bastille Day and Fete des Rois. 32. Geography using a real globe or an online world map mark all the places around the world that speak French/Spanish. Compare to all the places that speak English? How do they differ? Are there similarities? 33. During normal morning snack/toast/fruit time. Children to ask for items in target language. If possible traditional French/Spanish food could be served. 34. Art/DT - Younger children in school could make animal masks through collage and learn their names in target language. 35. Art/DT - Younger children could look at Disneyland Paris website using the interactive whiteboard. Children could make a junk model/plan of the grounds. 36. Literacy/Drama/Numeracy Arrange to take various classes or whole school to Standish High School for parts of the Day. They have a real French shopping street built in the language college area. 37. Literacy/Drama/Numeracy - Each class could be responsible for building a similar shopping street to the street at Standish High School in the corridor/school hall/outdoors. Items for each shop could be from the Foundation Stage classrooms, made with salt-dough/junk or real items where possible could be used. Ideas for the shopping street could be a hotel, travel agents, Maison de la Presse (newsagents), Epicerie (grocers), Postes (post office), Pharmacie (chemist), Banque (bank), Supermache (supermarket), Boulangerie (bread shop), Patisserie (cake shop), Café (could make real citron presse, chocolat chaud and croquemonsieur). Children could make and prepare produce for a French Market (Le Marche) set up with fruit, cheese, bread, vegetables, children pay with Euros. Children could make shopping lists, labels, signs, prices etc. Each class could have slots to use the shopping street. 38. The whole school or a Key Stage could get involved with organising a traditional (small scale) Summer Fair for parents or just children within school. Children could be responsible for: Making posters for around school to advertise the fair. Invitation to parents, community or governors. Making pretend Euros for guests at the fair to use. Develop a café area with real food to sell e.g. croissants, chocolat au chaud,, citron presse. Signs and Labels for each stall. Making games stalls - e.g. hook a duck to be done in target language.
