2 How do I take part? The Age UK Suffolk Bake Off is an exciting opportunity to put your baking skills to the test while raising money for Age UK Suffolk. We hope this guide will be your recipe for success. We knead you! We are asking people to use their baking skills for the benefit of local older people by holding Bake Off fundraising events. This could be anything from a cupcake sale with friends or work colleagues, to a pie and mash evening at your local pub, with all profits donated to Age UK Suffolk. The Bake Off is supported by East of England Co-op and hosted by Jimmy s Farm. Will you whisk it? The second part of the challenge, if you choose to accept it, is to submit your best Bake Off recipe for our 65th Anniversary Cookbook, which will feature 65 of the recipes submitted. There are four categories for you to enter (see page 4) and a prize winner will be selected from each of the four categories. The winner of each category will feature in the recipe book and be invited to have their baked creations judged by a celebrity chef as part of Jimmy s Farm Sausage and Beer Festival on 26th and 27th July The overall winner will be announced and crowned Age UK Suffolk s Best Baker

3 Fundraising To take part, please take a look at our fundraising ideas below and see what would work best for you. Register your event on a date that suits you and if you wish to enter the competition submit your recipe by Friday 6th June using the forms enclosed and return them using the FREEPOST address. Raising some dough! Depending on what you bake you might want to hold: A cake sale to colleagues or a cake competition with friends - everyone pays to enter, brings a cake and then you judge the entries. Sell some sarnies using delicious home-baked bread or rolls. A 3-course baked banquet or a progressive dinner. A Pizza face party - make your pizzas into works of art by basing them on friends and family and then sell them by the slice. If you are crafty as well as a baker then why not combine your talents into a craft and bake sale. If you know some local businesses you could ask for donations and hold a baking raffle event. Ask your local bakery if they would get involved maybe donating a percentage of Belgian bun sales or other baked treats (encourage them to submit their recipes too!) Speak to your local pub to see if they can support you in holding a pie and ale evening. Get your community involved and hold a bring and bake lunch at your local village hall. Everyone brings something they have made and pays a small donation, you all get a delicious lunch, meet new people and raise money for local older people. 3

4 Competition To enter our competition submit your recipe by returning the completed recipe form in your pack by 6th June. We d love to hear where your recipe came from so don t forget to fill in the story section and feel free to include a few photographs of you and your recipe for use on our website and in press coverage. Categories: Pies and pastries - this includes pork pies, sausage rolls and pasties. Cakes, puddings and desserts - cupcakes, crumbles, chocolate cookies and baked cheesecakes the sweet-treat choice is yours. Bread, buns and baps - are you a master baker? From croissants and ciabatta to cheese scones and pizza - is this the category for you? Baked main meals - these could include a scone topped stew, a luscious lasagne or a delicious fish pie... 4

Hold your event, raising loads of money and take some photos for our website and publicity. 6 Safe baking tips Tips from the Food Standards Agency Before you start: Wash your hands and any equipment you are using in hot soapy water. Keep food out of the fridge for the shortest time possible. Don t reduce cooking times Always make sure food is properly cooked before you serve it. Keep raw and ready-to-eat foods apart. Do not use food past its use by date. Check what is in the ingredients so information about allergens can be provided (e.g. provide a contains nuts label for cakes). At home, people making cakes should follow these tips: Don t use raw eggs in anything that won t be thoroughly cooked, such as mousse. Keep cheesecakes and any cakes or desserts containing cream or butter icing in the fridge. Store cakes in a clean, sealable container, away from raw foods, especially raw meat. On the day, people bringing in cakes from home or running the stall should follow these tips: Transport cakes in a clean, sealable container. Wash their hands as frequently as possible. Make sure that cheesecake and any cakes or desserts containing cream or butter icing are left out of the fridge for the shortest time possible. When handling cakes use tongs or a cake slice. Food hygiene certificates are not a legal requirement. If you are selling or handling food at a charity event, you need to do so safely but a qualification is not essential. 8 Cooking Projects Food n Friends Age UK Suffolk s Food n Friends clubs provide a regular monthly social life for people who rarely get out of the house. A Food n Friends club is also ideal for someone who would find a full-sized lunch club a bit overwhelming it gives people a chance to make new friends in a homely setting. We find a willing host who would welcome a small group of local older people to their home once a month, usually for a two-course lunch but perhaps for tea and cakes. The guests pay the host just the cost of the refreshments so that each club is run on a nonprofit-making basis. Some hosts just accept a donation. We are always looking for new potential hosts for Food n Friends. Carry on Cooking Meanwhile, our Carry on Cooking initiative is a microwave cooking demonstration that encourages older people who live alone to keep cooking for themselves. It is especially helpful for men who have never cooked before and shows how easy and quick it is to cook a healthy meal in a microwave.
