HITT101 H-ITT Audience Response System 101 Hardware Setup First Time Hardware Setup - WARNING this does take a few minutes Please note that the first time you insert the USB cable from the H-ITT receiver into your computer it will need to install some additional drivers. Odds are you will need administrative permissions on the computer to proceed. Follow the default prompts and please be patient. This operation can take several minutes. Once you click on <Finish>, it may need to do yet one more install. Again follow the default prompts and please be patient while it takes a few minutes to work. Click on <Finish> once it appears. PLEASE NOTE IF YOU ARE INSTALLING DRIVERS TO AN OLD COMPAQ LAPTOP... you must use a special USB long repeater cable, which the ITIGs can deliver. The driver for this cable should be downloaded and installed before you connect the cables/receiver to the laptop. The driver is located under Supplemental Materials at h-itt.com/download.html and is named CDM 2.02.04.exe. Normal Hardware Setup 1. Each kit contains the following: One receiver (H- ITT) One short USB cable One long USB cable 32 remotes or 'celery sticks' One tripod You will need a computer and a LCDprojector with it's video cable if you want your questions and responses to project on the screen. Also, you will need to install the H-ITT software downloaded from http://www.h- itt.com (directions on page 3). 2. Set up the tripod and remove the shoe from the top of the tripod. 3. Screw the shoe onto the back of the receiver - be careful you do not change any of the little switches. 4. Insert the shoe back into the tripod. To save time you can just keep the shoe on the back of the receiver all the time. 5. Insert the little end of the short USB cable into the bottom of the receiver - it can only fit one way so you should not have to press hard. Parma City School District Page 1 of 5
6. Insert the larger end of the short USB cable into the female end of the longer USB cable. 7. Insert the male end of the long USB cable into the USB port on your computer. If this is the first time you have done this on the machine please see the section on 'First Time Hardware Setup' 8. If the red LEDlights up on the H-ITT receiver you are ready to go. Preparing Your Questions The easiest way to prepare slides is to use your word processor. There is a sample Word97 file on the PCSD public Web site under <Information Systems> - <Training Materials> - <H- ITT>. Your steps are as follows: 1. Create a new file. Use a portrait layout with a one inch or less margin all the way around. 2. Use a font size of at least 48 - make the font an easy one to see from a distance. 3. Type your question at the top of the page. 4. Type your answers using the letters A - J in the space below. 5. When you are done with a page DONOTjust keep hitting [enters] to get to the next page. You want to hold down the [CTRL] key and then hit the [ENTER] key to insert a page break. This way if you make changes to a page it will not affect any subsequent pages. 6. You can add graphics, tables, etc. just as you would with any other word processing document. 7. Save the document. If you are sure the machine you will be using the H-ITT system on has Microsoft Word, you can just save as a Word document. If you are unsure, then it is best to save the file as a PDF so it may be opened on any machine. If you are using OpenOffice just click on the PDF icon on the toolbar at the top or <File> - <Export as PDF>. Note that the H- ITT software will recognize MS Office and PDF files, but not OpenOffice files. If you have a PDF printer (PDFCreator is available on Frodo) on your computer, click on <File> - <Print> and select the <PDF printer>. 8. Make sure you have the desired files either on a flash drive or on your network drive so you can access them with H-ITT. Parma City School District Page 2 of 5

If you click on <Slides> - <Window Location> you can select if you want the slides to appear on the left or the right. 3. Click on <Slides> - <Open Slides File> 4. Change the 'file type' to either.docor.pdf depending upon what type of file you saved earlier. 5. Navigate to where you have the file saved and open it. You should now see the questions appear on the side you selected. 6. You can navigate through your slides by using the scroll bar in between the two halves of the screen. You can also click on the page and then press [Page Up] or [Page Down] on the keyboard. Parma City School District Page 4 of 5
Show Time! To start collecting answers press on the green icon. The last three numbers of remote IDs (from the back of the remotes) will appear in the area opposite the questions. The additional number is how many times the student has changed their response. The color corresponds to the remote to make it easy for the student to locate their screen response quickly. To stop collecting answers click on the red icon. The graph showing the distribution of the responses will appear in place of the students' individual remote IDs. Controlling the program You may change the type of answers available to the students on a question- by- question basis by clicking on <Question Options> on the H-ITT menu bar. You may change the time allotted for the students to answer. You may control many items by clicking <Question Options> - <More Options>. <Use Instructor Remote ID> under <General> in <More Options> will allow the teacher to choose the correct answer using his / her celery stick. When the teacher clicks the <Show / Hide Correct Answer> button, the histogram will indicate the correct responses using whichever colors the instructor has chosen in the <Histogram> section of the <More Options>.
