Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 Computer Jeopardy Tutorial 1. Open up Microsoft PowerPoint Before you begin, save your file to your H drive. Click File > Save As. Under the header that says Organize click on the word COMPUTER. Under the words NETWORK LOCATION click on the H Drive, which also has your username. Save your file as firstinitiallastname_game_hour. Example: rschneider_game_5. 3. Close out of PowerPoint. Open up PowerPoint and open your game. This is to make sure that you saved it correctly. Remember PowerPoint does not automatically save for you. Save your project every 10 minutes. 4. This first slide is your title slide. Type Computer Jeopardy in the main center box. In the lower box, type Developed by Your Name. Press enter. Then type Your Hour Computer Literacy. 5. Add clipart to your slide that relates to computers. Click Insert > Clipart. Type the word computers in the search box. Below is an example of what your first slide should look like. 6. Next we are going to create our directions slide. In the ribbon, click on the Home Tab and the small arrow next to the word new slide. Select the Title and Content layout. See image below. 1
7. In the title box, type the word Directions. 8. In the box below, type This is where I will type my directions. You will notice that the bullets are turned on. Don t just delete them. Turn them off by clicking on the Home Tab and click on the bullets button. We will not need bullets here. Below is an example of what your slide will look like. 9. Next we are going to insert our main menu slide. Click on the Home Tab and select the lower arrow next to the new slide button. Select the title only layout. See image below. 10. In the top text box, which should be your only one, type Main Menu. It should look like the image below. 2
Activating Kiosk Mode Kiosk modes turns our presentation into a game and stops it from advancing to the next slide. Users will navigate using action buttons. 1. On the Slide Show tab, click on the setup show option. Select browsed at a kiosk and select O.K. See image below. Action Buttons Action buttons will take your user to a different screen. 1. Go back to your first slide or what will be referred to as our title slide. 2. Click on the Insert Tab > Shapes > Action Buttons. See screen below. 3
Above are all of the action buttons. Below is a table of what each button does. Previous Slide Return to Last Slide Viewed Next Slide Insert Movie Beginning of Show Insert Document End of Show Play Sound Home Help Info Custom 3. Select the next slide button and draw a rectangle that is about 2 inches wide and 1 inch tall. When you are done, action settings will appear. Notice the action next slide is selected. This will move your user to the next slide. Copy and paste this button onto your direction slide. Your first two slides should look similar to the ones below. 4. Next we will add our first question slide. 4
Developing your first question slide 1. Click on your main menu slide. Insert a new slide that is title and content. 2. Within the very top text box, type 100 Point Question. 3. Insert clipart that relates to the Internet. Then, go back to your main menu. 5
Action Buttons on the Main Menu Right now your main menu slide is blank. We need to create a button that will link to our question slide. We will insert a custom button. 1. Click Insert > Shapes > and Action Buttons. Select the custom button. Draw a button that is 2 inches wide by 1 inch tall. The action dialogue will appear. 2. Click Hyperlink to and change the drop-down to slide 3. A new window pops up. Change it to your 100 Point Question Slide. 6
4. Now the button will take your user to the 100 point question slide. 5. Next, type 100 on the button. Change the font to a larger size. 6. Make 3 copies of your buttons. Paste them on the main menu slide. Change the numbers to 200, 300, and 400. It should look like the image below: Creating Positive and Negative Feedback slides Below is an example of the next 2 slides that you will be creating. It s always good to have a visual to help you see the big picture. POSITIVE FEEDBACK SLIDE NEGATIVE FEEDBACK SLIDE 1. Right now you should have a total of 4 slides: Computer Literacy Directions Main Menu 100 Point Question 2. We need to create a positive feedback slide. To do this, select your 100 Point Question slide in the slide pane. Insert a new slide. The layout should be title and content. 7
3. In the top text box, type, That is Correct! 4. In the text box below, turn off the bullets. Type, Click the home button to return to the main menu. Resize that text box so it is only as big as your text. 5. Insert a positive graphic from clipart. 6. Insert the Home Action button the one that looks like a house. It should be 2 inches by 2 inches. 7. Change the action settings to navigate to Slide.Main Menu. Then click OK. See the example above for an example. 8. Next, we are going to create our negative feedback slide. Within the Slide Pane, right-click your positive feedback slide and select duplicate slide. You now have 2 of them. Click on the new one and change the title to, That is Incorrect! 9. In the next text box, type, Click on the return button and try again. Resize the textbox so it fits your text perfectly. 10. Insert a negative graphic. 11. Insert the Return Action Button. It looks like the letter U. It should be 2 inches by 2 inches. The color should be green. You do not need to change the actions because it automatically will take the user back to the last slide viewed. 12. See the example above. Adding action multiple choice buttons to your 100 point question slide 1. Click on your 100 point question slide. Insert a custom action button that is 1 inch by 1 inch. Within the action settings, change the action to slide That is Correct!. Press O.K. This button will now navigate to your correct feedback slide. Type a capital letter A on the button. Increase the size of the font. 2. Right-click the corner of the button and select copy. Click paste to make a copy of the button. Do that 2 more times so that you have a total of 4. Change the letters so that you have A,B,C,D. Try to line the buttons up. See the example below: 3. Now you need to change the action settings. All of your buttons navigate to the correct answer slide. You need to fix that on the other 3 buttons. 8
4. Right-click on the corner of the button not the text. Select edit hyperlink. Change the drop down to slide That is Incorrect. When you are finished, 1 button will go to the Positive Feedback slide and the other 3 will go to the negative feedback slide. Adding 3 more question slides 1. On the left, is a screen capture of the slide pane. It shows all of your 6 slides, which should be titled: Computer Literacy Directions Main Menu 100 Point Question That is Correct! That is Incorrect! 2. We need to add a 200, 300, and 400 point question slides. 3. In the Slide Pane, click on slide 4 or your 100 point question slide. Right-click it and select DUPLICATE. You will see point question slides. Do this two more times so that you have a total of point question slides. 4. Change the titles of each slide so that they are 200, 300, and Go back to your Main Menu slide and change the actions on your buttons so that they navigate to the appropriate question. Adding a global End Show action button In the top right corner of each slide, you will put a red button with the letter X. This will be the button that a user will press to close or end your show. 1. Insert a custom action button. It should be 1 inch by 1 inch. Change the action settings to END SHOW. Change the button to red and put a capital letter X on it. Place the button in the upper right corner of any slide. 2. Copy and paste this button to all of your slides. Adding a Main Menu action button to question slides In the top left corner of only your question slides, you will put a green home button. 1. On one of your question slides, create a Home action button that is 1 inch by 1 inch and is green. 2. Be sure the action settings navigate to the Main Menu slide. You may need to change it. Place it in the left corner of one of your question slides. Copy and paste this Home button to each of your question slides only. 9
How to align and distribute your action buttons 1. Go to one of your question slides. Make sure nothing is selected by clicking off of the slide. Place the top and bottom buttons where you would like them. Buttons B and C can be anywhere in the middle. See image 1 below: IMAGE 1 IMAGE 2 2. Make sure nothing is selected and draw a pretend rectangle, by holding down your mouse button over all 4 buttons. This will select the all. See image 2 above. 3. On the Home Tab, click Arrange > Align > Align Right. See image to the left. This will make your buttons aligned to the right edges. 4. Repeat step 3, but select the DISTRIBUTE VERTICALLY. 5. Your answer buttons will look like the image below: 6. Repeat this process for the rest of your question slides. 7. Then align and distribute the buttons on your Main Menu. 8. Our last step will be to add sounds. Add a negative sound for incorrect answers and a positive sound for correct answers. 10
